#Epilepsy #Drugs' Risk of #Birth Defects May Be Dose-Dependent Information on Healthline

Four of the most frequently prescribed epilepsy drugs appear to increase the risk of serious birth defects when taken early in pregnancy, a new study finds.

And the higher the dosage, the greater the risk, the international team of researchers reported in the June 6 online edition of The Lancet Neurology.

"Our results show that dose selection is as crucial as the choice of drug," the authors said in a journal news release. Their study gives doctors the opportunity to prescribe the safest anti-seizure medication at the safest level for women with epilepsy who want to get pregnant, they said.

The drugs studied were carbamazepine (Tegretol, Epitol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), valproic acid (Depakote), and phenobarbital.

Creating and sharing great content builds authority for your brand, KevinMD.com

by Richard Meyer

Content drives conversations. Conversation engages your customers.

Engaging with people is how your company will survive and thrive in this newly social world. In other words, online content is a powerful envoy for your business, with an ability to stir up interest, further engagement, and invite connections.  Why hasn’t the healthcare industry focused more on better content that drives engagement and creates trust?

Creating and sharing relevant, valuable information that attracts people to you and creates trust, credibility, and authority for your brand and that ultimately converts visitors and browsers into patients. The one who has the more engaging content wins, because frequent and regular contact builds a relationship.  Yet 99% of most content on drug websites is boring, hard to read and overly promotional.  What we have here is a classic example of failure to communicate.

Are senior citizens being overmedicated? – The Chart - CNN.com Blogs

Strong, antipsychotic drugs are being prescribed more often to senior citizens in U.S. nursing homes, setting off a debate about whether it's the right treatment for the elderly suffering from dementia.

Daniel Levinson, inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services, believes this increase - detailed in a recent study by his office - is a cause for alarm.  "The report found that too often, elderly residents are prescribed antipsychotic drugs in ways that violate government standards for unnecessary drug use," he wrote in a commentary for CNN.com.

Psychiatrist Daniel Carlat disagrees, saying the study Levinson cites is a "blizzard of statistics" that doesn't tell the entire story.  "When these drugs are successful, they soothe the inner turmoil that makes life intolerable for these patients, improving their quality of life dramatically," Carlat wrote in his commentary for CNN.com.

Addicts putting pharmacies under siege - CNN.com

Seattle, Washington (CNN) -- Less than two hours after picking out a man in a police lineup who held up his drugstore, pharmacist Mike Donohue was being robbed.

Again.

The new robber's face was hidden under the hood of a bulky black sweatshirt. He rocked back and forth anxiously, with his right hand planted in his pocket.

Like the other five robbers who had held up Donohue's store before, the man demanded OxyContin, a popular painkiller known for its high abuse potential.

"My technician came back and showed me the note that said, 'Give me your OxyContin. I have a gun,' " Donohue said.

When are stroke patients more likely to receive clot busting drugs?

by Todd Neale, MedPage Today Staff Writer

Patients suffering an acute ischemic stroke are about 20% more likely to receive clot-busting therapy with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) if they arrive at the hospital on the weekend, a retrospective study showed.

When are stroke patients more likely to receive clot busting drugs? However, there was no difference in rates of inhospital mortality based on the time of admission, Abby Kazley, PhD, of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and colleagues reported in the January issue of Archives of Neurology.

Jacob "Jack" Kevorkian Dies; Death With Dignity Proponent Remembered

Jacob "Jack" Kevorkian, otherwise known as "Doctor Death" fell victim Friday to a blood clot that released from his leg and lodged in his heart, assumed to be complications of kidney problems for which he was admitted to a hospital for in May of this year. He was 83 years of age.

Kevorkian is most known for serving eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence for second-degree murder starting in 1999. This resulted from a videotape he had made on September 17, 1998 which depicted the voluntary euthanasia of Thomas Youk, with the doctor's assistance by administering lethal injection.

Though his methods were controversial, the attention he prompted to the issue of "end of life" choices and "right to die" will only benefit patients as government agencies and lawmakers were forced to address the issues.

Black-Market Value of Antipsychotics, Antidepressants, and Hypnotics in Las Vegas, Nevada -- TARASOFF and OSTI 164 (2): 350 -- Am J Psychiatry

GREG TARASOFF, M.D., and KATHRYN OSTI
Las Vegas, Nev.

To the Editor: To our knowledge, this letter represents the first effort to document the monetary value of several antipsychotic and antidepressant medications outside of a custody setting on the black-market in a major U.S. city. The monetary value of benzodiazepines and narcotics in Canada has been previously published (1), and we include a few of these medications in this letter as well. Stimulants are not included in this letter because of insufficient reports of street prices in our cohort.

Several reports have documented the potential misuse of medications, not traditionally considered to be addictive, for recreational purposes, primarily in custody settings. These include quetiapine (2, 3), anticholinergics (4), and tricyclics (5).

When publicly funded outpatient clinic staff members were asked if they had any suspicions about misuse of these medications, many said that they had heard of patients selling their medications on the street, and several suspected that some patients feigned psychosis to obtain medications to sell.

Kathi Salley Randall @NurseKathi_NP #OrganizedWisdom Profile-Did You Know? #hcsm #nursing #nurses #health #rnchat #epatient @organizedwisdom

Kathi Salley Randall Nominated Profile
Profile not yet claimed
my.organizedwisdom.com/NurseKathi_NP

Neonatal Nurse, Coach to Nurse owned Business, Nurse Entrepreneur. Love...  Learn More

This is an open letter to Organized Wisdom, and specifically to Kathi Salley Randall, @NurseKathi_NP and other nurses who have been "profiled" without their knowledge.

Organized Wisdom claims to have over 5700 Expert "Curators" including you (student nurses, new graduate nurses)!

Click here to view your profile.
http://organizedwisdom.com/Kathi-Salley-Randall/NurseKathi_NP/show/pxne/med

We have made a very simple request of Unity Stoakes, President of Organized Wisdom - Notify All Your Curators, that they are being profiled, and their Twitter streams harvested for Profit.

Despite our requests, they continue to stall, stonewall, make excuses - so, we've decided to do the Nursing notifications ourselves.

Did you know Organized Wisdom is looking to profit from your name, reputation and would like to keep you in the dark as long as possible?

Like you, I was profiled on Organized Wisdom and my tweets being "harvested" and added to their index.

When displayed in their index, my name, my photo and drug advertising were displayed prominently. Same with yours.

So, a few questions.

1. Did you know you were profiled on Organized Wisdom? Most nurses (and doctors) contacted do not. Almost every profile I've come across is "Not Yet Claimed"

2. Do you consent to your name/likeness being used to promote their site? Are you OK with them selling you as an "expert"

3. Do you consent to your tweet streams, being harvested, unfiltered and added to an organization that chiefly sells drug advertising? It implies your endorsement.

4. Did you know, once submitted, your favorite sites are copied, plagiarized and their copyrights infringed upon.

5. Did you know, that as a "curator" you receive no compensation, even though Organized Wisdom makes money hand over fist from drug advertising. Can you say exploitation?

6. Did you know, that Organized Wisdom is now competing with you in the search engines, using your name, likeness?

Organized Wisdom displays the Health On The Net (HONcode) badge and is in violation of several of their eight criteria.

HONcode violations can be reported here if you feel you're being exploited: http://bit.ly/k8G096

This is not a new issue, nor are the abusive, exploitative and plagiaristic practices employed by Organized Wisdom.

More Organized Wisdom Un-Fair Play, Dr. R.L.Bates:"Fellow bloggers do you remember Wellsphere? Well, the latest “thief” of our information using our reputations and twitter feeds in a similar way is Organized Wisdom. Check out @laikas recent blog post on the topic: Expert Curators, WisdomCards & The True Wisdom of @organizedwisdom
http://rlbatesmd.blogspot.com/2011/05/more-organized-wisdom-un-fair-play.html

Organized Wisdom.Com: A Deception, Nancy Onyett, FNP-C:"In the evidence discovered from organizedwisdom.com, I was shocked to see how a large company who, I have no affiliation with could take my blogs and change my website adress to organizedwisdom. com address. Organized wisdom caused my web site to fall further down on google search with their site prioritizing over my site. Seriously, doesn't organizedwisdom.com have enough of their own health personnel to do health information blogs instead of stealing mine and misusing the material for their purposes of a pharma ad under their url's? I watched and notified many healthcare providers on Twitter of my circumstances attempting to help others that may be affected by this scam. It was the silent ones that disturbed me the most. I won't go into the thoughts of a much larger scam with this blog."

A discussion of the business practices we object to can be found here :

OrganizedWisdom's Twitter Hashtag #organizedwisdom

More on copyright issues explained by Dr. Simon Sikorski

Healthcare Marketing Center of Excellence, Copyright Violations:"There was much debate over what is construed as Fair Use. Some are fine with OrganizedWisdom plagiarizing their websites word for word and making money off of their work. Major concerns raised during #EndToFarms chat: 1) OrganizedWisdom not only plagiarizes but claims ownership of your work. They include -"OrganizedWisdom" next to every piece of information that has been copied from your copyrighted material 2) Just because OrganizedWisdom links to your work does not in any manner constitute "Fair Use" 3) In many cases, the doctors' own names were displayed infringing on major privacy concerns 5) The link itself is not the plagiarism we refer to. We couldn't care less about the link. What is important:"
http://bit.ly/kTwOkT

We'll be following and discussing this issue for a long time to come, feel free to join in and ask questions.
