Nothing Is More Important Than Relationships, #Inspirational Poems, Touching #Stories, #inspire #inspiration #poems

I sat next to the bed of old man, a friend for over twenty years, and held his hand. Hal was dying. We both knew these next few days would be his last.

We spent time reminiscing about his long and fruitful career as a church pastor. We talked about old friends. We chatted about his family. And I listened as he offered sage wisdom and advice to a member of a "younger generation."

At a lull in the conversation, Hal seemed to carefully consider what he was about to say next. Then he squeezed my hand, gazed intently into my eyes and whispered, just loud enough for me to hear, "Nothing is more important than relationships."

I knew that this was somehow near the pinnacle of his life's learnings. As he considered all of his experiences -- personal, professional, spiritual and family, this one ultimate observation surfaced above the rest: "Nothing is more important than relationships."

"Don't get overly caught up in your career," he seemed to be saying to me. "Likewise, don't use people in order to achieve your goals, then throw them away. No project, no program, no task should be pursued at the expense of friends and family. Remember," I heard him saying, as clearly as if he were speaking the words, "that in the end, only your relationships will truly matter. Tend them well."

Writer Og Mandino puts it this way: "Beginning today," he said, "treat everyone you meet as if he or she were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness, and understanding you can muster, and do so with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again."

At the end of a long life, my friend Hal would have agreed.

A Nurse's Wish, Nursing Poems, Caregiver Stories

To Receive our inspirational stories as we post them subscribe to our mailing list by sending a blank e-mail to inspirationalstories-subscribe@topica.com

To be a nurse requires dedication,
with years of study and preparation.
I pray for guidance and humbly ask
that I will do well at this chosen task.
When illness strikes or pain demands,
and a life is placed within my hands,
give me compassion, knowledge and skill
to do the things that comfort and heal

Suffering makes patients' fears grow worse
and they seek reassurance from their nurse.
Help me see things from their point of view
and always know what is best to do.

May I have a part in some small way,
in restoring good health to someone today.
Let my work be all that I want it to be
I ask the Great Healer to work through me.

Helen Bush

Circle of Life, by Jeff Reichardt RN, BSN, CNOR, CRNFA, CSA

To Receive our inspirational stories as we post them subscribe to our mailing list by sending a blank e-mail to inspirationalstories-subscribe@topica.com

I am tired.
I work so hard.

But, lately, I have been especially overworked.

My career has many stresses in it that are inescapable.
When I started it, I knew I would not get rich.
I knew that this career was a difficult one.
I knew that respect from my fellow professionals was hard won.

I knew that this profession had an image problem with the public.
But I felt that I could make a difference.
I felt that I could be a positive influence on my chosen career.

I was wide-eyed and naive, I'll admit, but part of me wishes that reality was different.

Part of me wishes that I could take all of the positives I have received and cancel out all of the negatives.

As for the positives. I am thankful that I was able to give a life back to an 18 year old who is just now learning how to live with being a quadraplegic.

I feel honored to have been asked to share in the bedside prayer for a brain dead 12 year old victim of an accidental gunshot wound. That his family, in their grief, thought to include me, his caregiver, in their grieving process.

For those experiences, I am grateful.

For the physicians who took the extra time to ask for my thoughts about the care of OUR patient. I am grateful as well.

For the families of hundreds of patients who stopped me in the hall to say thanks, I now say thank you.

I say thank you because I am leaving bedside nursing.

I am tired of the politicking.
I am tired of the back-stabbing.

I am so tired of the kinds of people who bolster their own pitiful egos by debasing someone else's. This group is not at all limited to physicians, although some nurses would like to say so.

I am tired of feeling guilty when I turn down a request from my manager to stay late for "another emergency". (The fifth one this week.)

I am tired of not receiving the respect I deserve, from my co-workers especially, as they should be keenly aware of what it takes, mentally, physically and emotionally to perform this, my chosen career.

I am tired of hearing about the shortage of nurses.
I think it's a wonder that there are any left to practice when you consider my above negative statements.

I know I am burned out. It's a shame too. I consider myself to be a good bedside nurse.

I worry about the next trauma victim, and their family as well.
Who will take the time (or will they?) to address the total family's needs ?

Who will sit and hold the hands of the parents who have just signed the organ procurement papers on their brain dead child, and now hope that, in their grief, some good will come ?

Who will take care of the body of the infant that just died in the ICN ?

It won't be me...

I am tired...

I hurt...

I am not alone, but it doesn't help...

I feel empty inside...

I can no longer do this to myself or my family...

I'm leaving what I love, but how can I?

The truth is I can't.

So, you see,
I am refreshed.
I still work hard.

But, lately, I have been eager to work.

My career has many stresses in it that are inescapable.
When I started it, I knew I would not get rich financially.
But my rewards have been many, and much more than money can buy.

I knew that this career was a difficult one.

But I have always enjoyed a challenge.
I knew that respect from my fellow professionals was hard won.
But I forgot that respect was a two way street.

I knew that this profession had an image problem with the public.
But, for a long time, I was just as much a part of the problem as the people that I had come to disdain.

I realize now that I HAVE made a difference.

I am no longer wide-eyed and naive.
I am seasoned and a little wiser.

And , YES, the positives DO outweigh the negatives.

So, to all the patients, the families, the doctors and all my fellow workers, let me say thank you.

I can't leave bedside nursing.

I need to be there for the next trauma victim and their family.

I need to hold the hands of the parents of that brain dead child.

And yes, I DO need to take care of the body of that child that died in the ICN.

It's GOT to be me !

I am refreshed...

I am now whole...

I have not been alone...

I am fulfilled...

I owe it all to my wife and children...

They have reminded me that this is what life is all about.

It's about joy, pain, courage and sorrow.

It's about taking care of each other. Meeting each others needs.
It's about renewing life and dignifying death.
But most of all, it's about being human. With all our faults and frailties...
all our strengths and weaknesses....
with all our capacities for kindness and compassion....
all our hopes and dreams...

In the end, we still carry on. Some say it's through God's will. I don't know...

For me, it's because I cannot turn my back on my fellow MAN. It's as simple as that.

For, if we turn our backs on our fellows, we greatly diminish ourselves...

A Hundred Years From Now, Inspirational Poems, Touching Stories

A hundred years from now no one will remember
How much money I had in the bank
what kind of car I drove
or what kind of job I had.

But I will be remembered
as someone special
because I made a difference
in the life of a child.

A Nurse Is More, by Richard G. Shuster, Nursing Poems, Inspirational Stories

To Receive our inspirational stories as we post them subscribe to our mailing list by sending a blank e-mail to inspirationalstories-subscribe@topica.com

A Nurse Is More, Why?
Though nobody, can say why, for sure,
Nurse's desire, for service, is pure.
Not for themselves, it has to be for others.
A life dedicated, to their sisters and their brothers.

A Nurse Is More, How?
Through reserves, of strength, care and love,
Nurses take their lead, from the power above.
Above and beyond, their duty comes first.
Their patient's needs paramount, before even hunger and thirst.

A Nurse Is More, When?
When we need them the most, at our times of ill,
Nurses come through, with their care and goodwill.
When we feel we can't go on, and wish, to give up the ghost.
That's when our Nurses, give it their most.

A Nurse Is More, Where?
In the hospital, the battlefield, the clinic and hospice,
Nurses are there, in the ER, the OR, the workplace, and medical office.
Where we are, to go for our care, thankfully, we find Nurses there.
Aging, sick, fearful, weary, we turn to Nurses, and know they care.

A Nurse Is More,
A Nurse Is More, much more than all we've said, or all we can say,
other than, to acknowledge the Nurses, who so brighten our day.
In gratitude, we thank Nurses, their willingness to serve, we find so
appealing, bringing to us, their comfort, wisdom, compassion and healing.

Richard G. Shuster

Tribute to a Pediatric Nurse, Inspirational Poems, Touching Stories

Within the heart of Heaven's home
A special tribute shines
In honor of your "child-nurse" role;
Botanical designs.

On solid crystal, edged in gold
A field of gardens grow
With flowers that astound the eye;
All Angels love to show.

For on this earth you'll never find
A sight of such display
That even Angels stand in awe
Speechless, and in dismay.

You see with tender care you touch
Each child in your command
And something magical takes root
Just like at Disneyland.

A gala show gets on the way
The Angels all adore
As blossoms form in shape of hearts
Up from this garden floor.

And as each blossom does erupt
A tune begins to play
That causes every flower above
To light up, and to sway.

And human eyes have never seen
A velvet heart of red
Nestled within a stem of gold
Upon a crystal bed.

But where the magic truly lies
Is more amazing yet,
Each time your love touches a child
A sight you can't forget.

Like perfect melodies of love
Each flower speaks a name
Of every child in your career
Who's known your nursing fame.

So high above this earthly plain
Majestic flowers grow
In honor of your TLC
And all the love you sow.
