Military Nursing, nursingdiscussions.com:"I am an RN and have ten years of prior military experience (enlisted). I am seriously considering going back into the military as a nurse. If you are a military nurse, active duty or very recently retired, let me know. I'm looking for info on what a duty day is like, what shift work is like, how many days a week is a duty week, what is staffing like, is the equipment from the stone ages, etc etc. My interest is really in the Air Force since i could apply my critical care focus in flight nursing at some point. I'd like to hear from anyone with knowledge of the military nurse world, though."

July, 2001: Recruitment And Retention Strategies For Nurses, Veterans Health Administration:"Registered nurses comprise the largest segment of health care workers within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Currently, VHA employs over 35,000 registered nurses and nurse anesthetists. VA nurse employment is stable at this time. VA enjoys a lower turnover rate (9.5 percent in 2000) than the national average of 15%. However, VA is experiencing difficulty in recruiting nurses with certain special qualifications such as intensive care, nurse practitioners or nurse anesthetists. While the difficulties are occurring nationwide, the types of nurses for which there are shortages vary by geographical region. Certain VA medical centers also report difficulties recruiting Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and nursing assistants (NAs)."

Angels of Mercy: Nurses' Tales:"During every major battle of World War II, the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge included, American nurses stationed near the front lines were charged with mending the wounded bodies and spirits of fighting soldiers. Their effectiveness and devotion to duty contributed greatly to the success of America's military forces. Here are a few of their stories."

Civil War Nurses "The Angels of the Battlefield":"William Ludwell Sheppard's watercolor In the Hospital, 1861 (above) pays tribute to those women of the South who labored ceaselessly to care for the war's wounded. "I have never worked so hard in all my life and I would rather do that than anything else in the world," declared one weary attendant."

Military Nursing Resource Guide, Medi-Smart's Directory of Military Nursing Resources:"Although the tradition of alleviating the sufferings of soldiers is an old one, military nursing had its beginnings in the Crimean War when Florence Nightingale began organizing battle nursing and the dispatch of women as nurses. Military nurses have served as bright examples in courage and leadership. Nursing in the military has its good points and its added risks, but having been there and done that during Vietnam and Desert Storm, I have to say that the rewards far exceeded the drawbacks in my opinion. A military nurse has much more scope of practice than allowed by any state's nurse practice acts and the opportunities to further one's education are beyond compare. Here are some links to sites & information you might find useful."

Program for Research in Military Nursing: Progress and Future Direction, Committee on Military Nursing Research, Institute Of Medicine:"High-quality nursing care is essential to obtain favorable patient outcomes. Military nursing research has the capacity to prevent health problems, improve patient care, and contribute to appropriate and desirable outcomes that are cost-effective in many situations. In the last 45 years, considerable progress has been made in wide-ranging applications of research in military nursing. Unarguably, however, further evolution and programs of military nursing research will depend on enhanced scholarly inquiry by military nurses and on the dissemination and application of research results."
