- Swimmer's ear is a common malady every summer as millions of Americans plunge into pools, lakes and oceans seeking relief from the heat.
But swimmer's ear takes a toll — and not just on parents and patients.

According to a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, swimmer's ear also costs the nation a lot of money and time spent on doctors' visits. In 2007, the latest data available, the CDC found that an estimated 2.4 million health care visits were attributed to swimmer's ear — at a cost of about $500 million.

CDC study links bullying with family violence | Reuters

While bullies and their victims traffic in threats, taunts and fights in the schoolyard, a report on Thursday showed those on both sides are also more likely to live with violence at home.

Violent family encounters were most common among youth who identified as someone who has both bullied and been victimized, the report said.
The association was among findings from a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which along with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health analyzed data from middle and high school students across the state.
Massachusetts has been at the forefront of the bullying debate since the widely reported suicides of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince of South Hadley last year and 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover of Springfield in 2009.

What's this I hear that allowing pets to sleep on your bed puts you at risk for some dangerous diseases? I've always let my cats sleep on the bed. Is this for real?

A team of veterinary researchers in California recently warned against allowing pets to sleep with their owners, citing studies showing that this practice can favor the transmission of a number of diseases. Their search of medical literature turned up cases of meningitis, staphylococcus infections, bubonic plague, Chagas disease (caused by a parasite and spread to animals and humans from infected bugs) and cat-scratch disease that were passed from animals to humans via licking, kissing or sleeping in the same bed. But they conceded that cases of serious infections passed from animals to humans in this way are rare.

Vital Signs: Teen Pregnancy --- United States, 1991--2009

Background: In 2009, approximately 410,000 teens aged 15--19 years gave birth in the United States, and the teen birth rate remains higher than in other developed countries.

Methods: To describe U.S. trends in teen births and related factors, CDC used data on 1) teen birth rates during 1991--2009 from the National Vital Statistics System, 2) sexual intercourse and contraceptive use among high school students during 1991--2009 from the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and 3) sex education, parent communication, use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), and receipt of reproductive health services among teens aged 15--19 years from the 2006--2008 National Survey of Family Growth.

Results: In 2009, the national teen birth rate was 39.1 births per 1,000 females, a 37% decrease from 61.8 births per 1,000 females in 1991 and the lowest rate ever recorded. State-specific teen birth rates varied from 16.4 to 64.2 births per 1,000 females and were highest among southern states. Birth rates for black and Hispanic teens were 59.0 and 70.1 births per 1,000 females, respectively, compared with 25.6 for white teens. From 1991 to 2009, the percentage of high school students who ever had sexual intercourse decreased from 54% to 46%, and the percentage of students who had sexual intercourse in the past 3 months but did not use any method of contraception at last sexual intercourse decreased from 16% to 12%. From 1999 to 2009, the percentage of students who had sexual intercourse in the past 3 months and used dual methods at last sexual intercourse (condoms with either birth control pills or the injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera) increased from 5% to 9%. During 2006--2008, 65% of female teens and 53% of male teens received formal sex education that covered saying no to sex and provided information on methods of birth control. Overall, 44% of female teens and 27% of male teens had spoken with their parents about both topics, but among teens who had ever had sexual intercourse, 20% of females and 31% of males had not spoken with their parents about either topic. Only 2% of females who had sexual intercourse in the past 3 months used LARCs at last sexual intercourse.

CDC Sees EHRs As Public Health 'Game Changer' -- InformationWeek

Sometimes forgotten in the rush to install electronic health records (EHRs) is that improving population and public health is a major goal of the federal meaningful use EHR incentive program. But many in the public health community are counting on greater EHR adoption and interoperability among physicians and hospitals to help identify and respond to future disease outbreaks, according to a top government health IT official.
"Public health agencies, from local to state to federal, have been building information technology for years, but because we don't have a lot of connections to y'all, we don't have a lot of information to share," Dr. Seth Foldy, director of the public health informatics and technology program office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Tuesday. "In the future, we assume that most of our public health allies will be perched in front of their EHRs."

Ida Follette screamed for her husband, Darrell.

He lifted his child's body, rushed her to the bed and tried to bring her back.

"She was so light, she was so light. And I put her down. I said, 'No, Chelle!'"

But the time had passed for CPR, he said, his voice fading with still raw grief. His wife sat next to him on the couch, sobbing at the retelling.

An estimated 3.1 million Hispanic adults in the United States have arthritis. A newly released CDC study provides information on the burden of arthritis among specific Hispanic groups in the United States. CDC found the prevalence of arthritis varied across Hispanic populations, ranging from 12% among Cuban/Cuban-Americans to 22% among Puerto Ricans.

Medical News: Southerners Move as Slowly as They Speak - in Primary Care, Exercise & Fitness from MedPage Today

Southerners and folks from Appalachia appear to be the biggest couch potatoes in the U.S., according to a CDC report.

In the majority of counties in those regions, more than 29% of adults reported getting no exercise other than physical activity performed for their regular job. When compared with existing maps of other CDC data, counties with the lowest levels of physical activity also had the greatest prevalence of obesity and diabetes.

The new exercise data come from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2004-2008, which used self-reported data from state-based adult telephone surveys and 2007 census information. The BRFSS survey asks participants if they do any physical activity or exercise outside the workplace.

However, the agency wanted to paint a larger picture of physical activity in the U.S., and synthesized the survey response numbers with stats and maps showing patterns of obesity and diabetes -- which can be found on a special page on the CDC's website.

Why Vitaminwater Is Bad For Public Health - Matthew Herper - The Medicine Show - Forbes

Who needs a flu shot when you can have a bottle of flat sugar water spiked with ascorbic acid and food coloring?

At least, that’s the impression that Vitaminwater, made by Coca-Cola’s Glaceau unit, left in one advertisement. The National Consumers League, a 100-year-old advocacy group, sent a formal complaint about Vitaminwater’s ads to the Federal Trade Commission last week. The NCL also complained about a Vitaminwater TV spot, and about the slogans on the company’s bottles, which declare that “vitamins + water = all you need.” I’ve included both advertisements in this story for reference.

“Discouraging members of the public from getting a flu shot as recommended by government health authorities is not only deceptive, but dangerous,” writes Sally Greenberg, the NCL’s executive director. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other public health agencies, have recommended that many Americans get a vaccination to protect them from contracting the flu.”

CDC Features - February is American Heart Month

About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2010, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 had a recurrent attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one.¹

The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or a stroke in the future. Diseases and Conditions That Put Your Heart at Risk

Other conditions that affect your heart or increase your risk of death or disability include arrhythmia, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and secondhand smoke are also risk factors associated with heart disease. CDC: U.S. Healthcare System Can Do Better in Treating CVD | All Sites Nursing News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites issues with the U.S. healthcare system as part of the reason for the extent of cardiovascular disease in the country.
In a report released Tuesday, the CDC said two-thirds of adults with high cholesterol and half with hypertension do not receive effective treatment.
"Although we're making some progress, the United States is failing to prevent the leading cause of death — cardiovascular disease — despite the existence of low-cost, highly effective treatments," said CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH.
"We need to do a better job improving care and supporting patients to prevent avoidable illness, disability and death."
For many people, according to the CDC, merely having healthcare coverage is not sufficient.
