Top Ten Things You Should (and Shouldn't) Say to The Parent of an Autistic Child

If you're the parent or caregiver of a child on the autism spectrum, Autism Awareness Month is not for you.  You are already aware of autism.  Like, really, really aware.  Aware that you need another cup of coffee, a Xanax, and possibly an advanced degee in Education Law.

Autism Awareness Month is for everyone else.  To help out, here's my Top Ten Things You Should (and Shouldn't) Say to The Parent of an Autistic Child.

10. DON'T SAY: "Wow, your son is great at math.  He's just like Rain Man."

DO SAY:  "Wow, your son is great at math."

9. DON'T SAY: "He should probably be in a special class, so other kids won't make fun of him."

DO SAY:  "We should probably be teaching our children more empathy."

8. DON'T SAY:  "You should try giving your kid more discipline."

DO SAY: "You should try these brownies I made for you."

7. DON'T SAY: "Wow, your kids all seem to have a lot of problems.  Have you ever heard of Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome?"

DO SAY: "Wow, you're really on top of things for your kids.  It must be hard, but it seems like you're doing a great job."

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980, Inspirational Poems, Touching Stories

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You hung my first painting on the refrigerator
And I wanted to paint another.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You fed a stray cat
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You baked a birthday cake just for me
And I knew that little things were special things.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You said a prayer
And I believed there was a God that I could always talk to.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You kissed me good-night
And I felt loved.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
I saw tears come from your eyes
And I learned that sometimes things hurt --
But that it's alright to cry.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You smiled
And it made me want to look that pretty too.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980
You cared
And I wanted to be everything I could be.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980 --
I looked ...
And wanted to say thanks
For all those things you did

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking by Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980.

This poem was inspired by my mother, Blanche Montgomery Schilke.

Mary Rita Schilke Korzan ©1980, http://onceuponapoem.com/

"When I wrote a tribute for my mother years ago, I never anticipated it would take a world wide journey. Nonetheless, that is exactly what happened. The story I am about to share with you may read like fiction. I can assure you, there is nothing in the world that has ever been more true.

Frost covered the windows in my little apartment as I sat thinking about the festivities that would define my life in a few short months. In June (1980) I would graduate with an education degree from Bowling Green State University and would be married six days later. It didn't take much reflection to realize I owed a debt of gratitude to many who helped me along the way. Even so, it was my mother, more than any other, who taught me by example and inspired me. The rest of the story

Helping a Child Who Is Afraid of Shots

When your young child whimpers at the mention of the word "shot," you probably have mixed feelings. You want your son to be protected by his vaccinations; you just wish that the procedure was pain-free.

"Vaccines protect the health and well-being of children, but children don't understand that," says Deborah Wexler, MD, executive director of the Immunization Action Coalition, a national organization based in St. Paul, Minn. "It can be really hard for them to come in for their shots."

Fortunately, you can have an active role in changing your child's attitude. What a parent says and does before, during, and after the doctor's appointment can help to calm a child, reduce her fears, and ensure that she develops a healthy attitude toward seeing the pediatrician.

If you struggle with what to say or have trouble putting on a brave face, read on for expert advice.

Parenting, Part II: Weight is heavy topic to discuss with grown children - USATODAY.com

Kim Painter has written about health and wellness for USA TODAY since 1987. She is the mother of two teen boys.

Daphne Oz puts it bluntly: " 'You've gotten fat' is a pretty hard thing to hear from a parent." But it is something that, in one form or another, many young adults do hear from their parents, says the author of The Dorm Room Diet.

And weight is something many parents desperately want to discuss with their grown children, says Ruth Nemzoff, a resident scholar at Brandeis Women's Studies Research Center in Waltham, Mass. She writes and speaks on relationships between parents and grown children and says that weight is a hot topic among parents in her audiences.

"I hear this constantly," she says. "They'll say, 'My daughter is really bright. She's got a Ph.D., but she's really fat. What can I do? Can I say anything?' "

At this time of year, when so many people think of weight loss, the temptation to speak up may be especially strong. And if you happen to be at the end of a winter break with a college student who gained the dreaded freshman 15 (or, more likely, 5 or 8 pounds), this may seem like a perfect time to talk weight.

But think before you speak. And consider saying nothing at all.

That's the advice of Jane Isay, author of two books on family relationships, including Walking on Eggshells: Navigating the Delicate Relationship Between Adult Children and Parents. "Our kids know what we are thinking before we say it," she says. "The idea that they are not aware that you are worried about their weight is nuts."

And, she says, "every overweight person has a mirror and knows what she looks like." She asks parents to consider their power: "Any criticism from a parent is heard through a megaphone."

Nurse-Family Partnership Celebrates 10 Years - WGHP

Nearly 500 first-time mothers can thank a Guilford County program for getting them on their feet.

The Nurse-Family Partnership program celebrated its 10th anniversary Wednesday. The program partners a low-income, first-time mother with a nurse. The nurses visit the mothers, educating them on how to improve their child's well-being, as well as how to become more economically self-sufficient.

"I was just uneasy about being a single mom. I wanted to be perfect, but there is no such thing as a perfect parent. This program has helped me work toward perfection with my son and myself," new mom Jameya Turner said.

The partnership lends support from pregnancy all the way until the child's second birthday.

Myths Fuel Dangerous Decisions to Not Vaccinate Children | Vaccination Decline | Bacterial Meningitis & Vaccine Myths | LiveScience

Over the course of one summer vacation, Tyler Ludlum went from being a healthy 10-year-old, looking forward to the pool, to an emotionally and physically traumatized preteen who'd traded both of his feet, and half the fingers on his right hand, for his life.

It could have been prevented if he – or those around him – had been vaccinated.

Tyler had contracted meningococcal meningitis, a swelling of membranes around the brain and spinal cord that's caused by bacteria passed by nasal or oral droplets. Tyler was likely in the vicinity of a perhaps asymptomatic carrier of the disease, when this person coughed or sneezed.

But his story is more than a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time: A vaccine that's at least 85 percent effective at preventing meningococcal meningitis is widely available and strongly recommended by health officials. Too young to have received the vaccination as part of a routine visit, Tyler was dependent on those around him to be immunized.
