What Your Urine is Telling You About Your Health - Page 1 - MSN Health - Health Topics
A trip to the toilet may be more revealing than you think. “The appearance and smell of your urine—as well as the frequency with which you have to go—can provide many clues to what else is going on in your body,” says Dr. Michael Farber, director of the Executive Health Program at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J.
Looking pale
If your urine is as colorless as water, well, that’s probably because you’ve been drinking a lot of water. And besides the inconvenience of going to the bathroom many times a day because your bladder is filling up with fluid faster, there’s really nothing medically worrisome about having a light colored output.Too dark
If your urine has a brownish, iced tea-colored tinge, that could be a sign that you are dehydrated and the kidney is producing more concentrated (as opposed to diluted) urine. “The urine gives good indications of the body’s level of hydration,” Farber says, “so if a patient complains of dizziness or lightheadedness, you would want to check the urine to rule out dehydration as a cause of the problem.” The ideal shade to strive for is the color of straw. Another reason to get yourself checked out if you see dark urine—especially if it doesn’t lighten up after you drink a few glasses of water—is that the cause could actually be blood. It won’t be as obvious as a bright red drop in the toilet, but it could be a sign of bleeding higher up in the kidney which could indicate an infection, kidney disease or even cancer.Sweet smelling
Catching a whiff of something sugary sweet after you pee might actually be a clue to something very serious going on in your body. “A sugary smell might indicate the presence of blood sugar that’s being excreted in the urine,” says Farber

Probiotic bacteria could help treat Crohn's disease, American Society for Microbiology
New research suggests that infection with a probiotic strain of E. coli bacteria could help treat an reduce the negative effects of another E. coli infection that may be associated with Crohn's disease. Researchrs from the University of Auckland, New Zealand publish their results in the April 2011 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
Crohn's disease is a common chronic disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract and is believed to develop as a result of an aberrant immune response to intestinal microbes in a genetically susceptible host. Over the last decade, high levels of adherent invasive E. coli (AIEC) have been reported. One study isolated the bacteria in 36% of Crohn's sufferers compared to just 6% of controls.
Since Crohn's disease is a clinical subtype of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and others have reported successful treatment of IBC with the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917 (EcN), the researchers investigated the impact EcN might have on an already established infection with AIEC in cell cultures mimicking those found in the lining of the intestines.

Enhanced Cleaning of ICUs Associated With Reduced Risk of MRSA Transmission
Posted in News, Cleaning, Environmental Hygiene, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), Mrsa Infections, Infectious Disease Transmission, Infections, PathogensAn intervention for enhanced cleaning of intensive care unit (ICU) rooms that included increased education on important cleaning techniques was associated with a lower rate of acquisition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in rooms that were previously occupied by MRSA carriers, according to a report in the March 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
“Environmental contamination with multidrug-resistant organisms may facilitate the spread of health care-associated infections. This is particularly important in ICUs, in which patients are at high risk of infection due to comorbidities [co-existing illnesses], wounds, and the use of medical devices. Prior research has shown that admission to an ICU room previously occupied by a patient harboring MRSA or vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) was associated with a 40 percent increased risk of acquisition,” according to background information in the article.

Inadequate Vitamin D Affects One Third Of Americans
One third of Americans aged at least 1 year are at risk of inadequate vitamin D levels and 8% are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, a new report issued by the National Center for Health Statistics revealed. The report added that 1% had excessive blood levels of vitamin D.Vitamin D encourages the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous, it is a steroid vitamin. Individuals who are exposed to normal quantities of sunlight directly onto the skin generally get plenty of vitamin D, because sunlight encourages adequate vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
Vitamin D is also an immune system regulator, it helps keep our bones healthy, it may reduce multiple sclerosis risk, it likely helps keep the brain working well later in life, experts believe it helps us maintain a healthy body weight, it can reduce frequency and severity of asthma symptoms, it has been shown to reduce rheumatoid arthritis risk in women, it probably protects us from low level radiation damage, and has cancer protecting qualities (click here to read about this in more detail).

Conflicts Of Interest In Guideline Development: A Dirty Little Secret Gets Aired Again | The Health Care Blog
An Archives of Internal Medicine article (Conflicts of Interest in Cardiovascular Clinical Practice Guidelines) is getting a lot of notice today. In essence, many of the physicians who develop guideline that influence practice patterns and payment decisions have conflicts. The authors recommend only allowing those without conflicts to write the guidelines.
This isn’t a new issue. In 2006 I wrote a piece (Another dirty little secret is out in the open) and am reposting it below because it’s timely:
A year ago in Time to deal with medicine’s dirty little secrets?, I wrote about a variety of practices that are relatively well-known in the health care field but would be shocking to outsiders. Industry often takes the blame for “aggressive marketing tactics,” and no doubt some of that is deserved. But physicians are also culpable.
