Rand: High-deductible health plans produce good and bad outcomes | Healthcare Finance News

A new study by the Rand Corporation indicates people on high-deductible health plans significantly reduce their healthcare spending – but they're also cutting back on preventive care.

The study of more than 800,000 families across the country showed that when families changed to health plans that carried an annual deductible of $1,000 or more per person, their healthcare spending dropped by an average of 14 percent. Healthcare spending was also lower for those same families with a moderate health savings account.

Savings decreased, however, for families with an HSA where employers contributed more than half of an individual’s deductible.

The Law And Cannabis: Protecting Teens From Future Psychosis?

Smoking pot as a teen may lead to psychosis later on in life. Cannabis is described as an "illicit drug" and is the most used in this category worldwide. Interesting enough, it is not clear whether the link between cannabis and psychosis is direct, or whether it is because people with psychosis use cannabis to self medicate their symptoms.

A Dutch team, where cannabis usage is legal in their country, set out to investigate the association between cannabis use and the incidence and persistence of psychotic symptoms over 10 years. However, the study took place in Germany and involved a random sample of 1,923 adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 24 years.

Advanced Practice Nursing: A New Age in Health Care, American Nurses Association:"Innovative advances in health care make frequent headlines, but there is an equally innovative, if somewhat misunderstood, treatment for the cost and accessibility woes plaguing the United States health care system. Almost 140,000 advanced practice nurses -- and their numbers are growing -- are carving out a new role in delivering timely, cost-effective, quality health care, especially to chronically underserved populations such as the elderly, the poor, and those in rural areas. Some 60% to 80% of primary and preventive care traditionally done by doctors can be done by a nurse for less money. This is not to say nurses work cheaper, but their cost-effectiveness reflects a variety of factors related to the employment setting, liability insurance, and the cost of education."

Certification and Regulation of Advanced Practice Nurses:"Position Statement: The nursing profession must develop a standardized national advanced practice nursing certification process by the year 2000. Advanced Practice Nurse is an umbrella term appropriate for a licensed registered nurse prepared at the graduate degree level as either a Clinical Specialist, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse-Midwife, or Nurse Practitioner. Advanced Practice Nurses are professionals with specialized knowledge and skills that are applied within a broad range of patient populations in a variety of practice settings (see Attachment A). All Advanced Practice Nurses should hold a graduate degree in nursing and be certified. Each existing and future professional nursing specialty certifying entity must meet uniform national standards when certifying nurses for advanced practice. Those standards would be developed and administered by a separate organization such as the American Board of Nursing Specialties. Professional certification validates and standardizes the qualifications and practice competencies of the Advanced Practice Nurse and is the appropriate mechanism by which the public's health and safety can be protected. There are nurses prepared at the advanced level who have roles as administrators and educators. This position statement does not address those individuals. Rather, it focuses on nurses prepared for roles as direct care providers."

Five new genes linked to Alzheimer's | ABS-CBN News | Latest Philippine Headlines, Breaking News, Video, Analysis, Features

Scientists said Sunday they had uncovered 5 genes linked to the onset of Alzheimer's disease, doubling the number of genetic variants known to favor the commonest form of dementia.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Genetics, may provide clues on the causes of this incurable and complex disease and help doctors predict who is most at risk, they said.

In the largest such studies to date, some 300 scientists in two consortia combed the genomes of 54,000 people -- some afflicted, others not -- to tease out the newly identified genetic variations.

The two projects started out independently but later swapped their data, enabling each group to confirm the overall findings.

Want Medicare To Pay For Home Care? See Your Doctor : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

Starting next month, seniors getting health care in their homes will have to see a doctor to make sure they actually need the service. Otherwise Medicare won't pay.

Sounds logical, right?

Not so, says a coalition of health providers and consumer groups that complains the rule is overly burdensome on seniors and doctors.

Home health agencies, doctor and consumer groups say frail, homebound seniors won't be able to get to a doctor's office because of their health status or lack of doctors in rural areas.

They also worry that many doctors are either unaware of the new regulation or won't know how to comply with its documentation requirements that call on physicians to certify they or another health care provider, such as a nurse practitioner, have seen a patient for the specific reason of certifying the need for home health care.

"There is a lot of confusion out there, and patients may lose access to their care," said Nora Super, an AARP lobbyist.

Efforts to Plug Japanese Reactor Leak Seem to Fail - NYTimes.com

Workers’ struggle to plug a gush of highly contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, using sawdust, shredded newspaper and an absorbent powder, appeared to be failing early Monday as the radiation threat from the crippled plant continued to spread.

Multimedia

Shiho Fukada for The New York Times

On Monday, people in Otsuchi, Japan, in Iwate Prefecture, searched for belongings in homes damaged by the March 11 tsunami.

Water with high amounts of radioactive iodine has been spewing directly into the Pacific Ocean from a large crack discovered Saturday in a six-foot-deep pit at the coastal plant north of Tokyo. The pit is next to the seawater intake pipes at the No. 2 reactor.

After an unsuccessful attempt to flood the pit with concrete to stop the leak, workers on Sunday turned to trying to plug the apparent source of the water — an underground shaft thought to lead to the damaged reactor building — with more than 120 pounds of sawdust, three garbage bags full of shredded newspaper and about nine pounds of a polymeric powder that officials said absorbed 50 times its volume of water.
