More senior citizens are dying at home - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com

jdorschner@MiamiHerald.com

After years of experts and patients saying people at the end of life might be more comfortable dying at home, a new study says that may finally be happening: fewer seniors in the United States and South Florida are dying in hospitals.

But the same survey finds that in the last months of life for seniors throughout the United States and especially in Miami, the trend is for more of them to see large numbers of specialists and to spend more time in expensive intensive care units.

Those are the results of the latest study from the Dartmouth Atlas, a project of the Dartmouth Medical School. The project for years has been using Medicare data to expose anomalies in healthcare costs and wide geographic disparities in expenses.

“Miami is practically off the charts,” says David Goodman, a Dartmouth researcher who was the lead author of the study. “It really continues to stand out” for having the highest costs and most extensive treatments in the last months of life, even when adjusted for age, ethnicity, race and severity of illness.

Tips and Advice for Traveling with a Pet - Blog - Clinical One

Tips and Advice for Traveling with a Pet

February 16, 2011
By: Michelle Bogner, Recruitment Specialist

ShareThis

If you travel for a living, you know that a lot of planning and preparing goes into making sure you have a successful assignment. When you throw a pet (or two) into the mix, there's a lot more to think about...but a lot more fun as well! Here are nine quick tips for hitting the road with your pet:

1. Pack their health docs. Chances are you've just filled out and turned in documents for yourself...but don't forget your pet! It's a good idea to pack your pet's medical records, vaccination records, and any other pertinent info just in case you need to see a vet while you're away from home. Also, it's a good idea to have a current picture of your pet with you in case they happen to slip away from you.

2. Take breaks. When you're traveling, if you need a break, chances are your pet does too. Make sure to keep their food intake to a minimum, and give them plenty of chances to stretch their legs and use the restroom.

3. Safety first. It's really cute for your cat or small dog to be sunning themselves on the dashboard, but it's not safe at all. Make sure all pets are properly restrained when traveling so they don't get injured during turns or sudden stops. Also, you don’t want them to be able to dart out of the car when you open the door when you stop.

Campbell’s Soup Has a Math Problem | Fooducate

Here’s an interesting read from the Consumerist Blog. Several moms from New Jersey are suing Campbell’s for misleading labeling.

You’d think that the soup on the right has 25% less sodium than the one on the left, but in fact, they both have 480mg. So why the big bold statement? If you read the fine print, you’ll realize that this is 25% less than other regular soups.

To Campbell’s credit, they have been reducing sodium in their soups in the past few years and plan to continue reductions.

But stating “25% Less Sodium” or “30% more fiber” in bold text and then adding a tiny qualifier at the bottom “compared to regular” is the kind of sleazy behavior we all hate as consumers.

And 480mg of sodium is still quite a high count for a single cup of soup.

How social media is changing the patient experience and the future of health care

How social media is changing the patient experience and the future of health care

OHA Today recently caught up with Colleen Young, Founder of the Health Care Social Media Canada Twitter Group #hcsmca (Health Care Social Media Canada). #hcsmca brings together individuals in the twitter sphere every Wednesday to discuss the latest in the health care community. Colleen shares her knowledge and experience with #hcsmca and how getting involved in social media to improve the overall patient experience is definitely worthwhile.

OHA Today: Why did you start #hcsmca?

Colleen Young: #hcsmca stands for health care social media Canada, a geo-chapter of the #hcsm phenomenon started by Dana Lewis in the US. It was a simple concept — bring people on Twitter together, regardless of profession or expertise, to discuss health care for one hour each week. After taking part in #hcsm and the European geo-chapter #hcsmeu for a several months, I wanted to explore similar issues with respect to the Canadian experience and wondered if others felt the same way. Since the first chat held Sept. 29, 2010 our community has grown to more than 500 people using the hashtag and taking part in the #hcsmca chats every Wednesday at 1pm ET.

OT: What were your strategies to grow #hcsmca?

CY: Like starting any community, it takes time and commitment. The work started before the first chat. I spoke to people on and offline to see if there was an appetite. Once the conversations started, I monitored people on Twitter who were tweeting about health and health care in Canada and invited them to join the chats. This was especially successful when I connected with people looking for information on a topic or someone who had an interesting case study to present to participants. One time our chat coincided with an OHA symposium about community engagement, which resulted in an amazing sharing between OHA and #hcsmca participants.

Our community really solidified and grew after the first pan-Canadian #hcsmca meetup on Feb. 24, 2011. There are also plans to hold more in-person events.

Frequently Asked Questions (Certified Legal Nurse Consultants) Janice M. Hansen, RN, BSN, CLNC, National Nurse Consulting (NNC)

Frequently Asked Questions

We try to anticipate questions you might have about our services and provide the answers here. If you need additional information please send an email to legalnurse.hansen@gmail.com

1.

What is a National Nurse Consulting CLNC®?

We are registered nurses who have successfully mastered the rigorous CLNC® Certification Program developed by the company that pioneered the field of legal nurse consulting.  NNC's professionals have the expertise to quickly pinpoint and interpret medical and nursing issues in any case involving health, illness or injury.

2.

Why should I use a CLNC® and not an MD?

Cost-effectiveness!  National Nurse Consulting's nurses have constant, face-to-face patient contact and extensive experience in the "trenches" of the healthcare system and can educate attorneys about a wide range of basic medical issues.  Our gained experience allows us to focus on relevant and pertinent information to the case in a time efficient way without sacrificing analytical accuracy, saving you time and money otherwise spent on expensive medical experts.

3.

Why do I need a CLNC® when I already have a Paralegal?

Though paralegal's play a vital role in assisting attorneys, they simply do not have the medical training, clinical experience, or the insider's knowledge on the inner workings of the medical system that an RN does.  In today's complex healthcare climate, it is imperative to have on your team someone with education in science and medicine who will successfully decipher the information and nuances that will deliver optimal results.

No-smoking laws: Most U.S. states could have them by 2020 - Health Key

No-smoking rules will be everywhere by 2020, predicts the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if the rate of new laws banning smoking in restaurants, bars and private worksites continues.

Already, 25 states and the District of Columbia have bans in those locations, up from zero states in 2000. So in the next 10 years, the other half of the country seems likely to join them. But maybe not the South.

The CDC writes in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

“Regional disparities remain in policy adoption, with no southern state having adopted a smoke-free law that prohibits smoking in all three venues.”

Some Southern states are close—Florida and Louisiana have restrictions in worksites and restaurants but not bars. And North Carolina has bans in restaurants and bars but not worksites.

Hey, hand sanitizers. You can only do so much – and preventing MRSA infection isn’t one of those things -- so stop over-promising! That was the gist of warning letters from the Food and Drug Administration to four makers of the popular products.

Apparently, the manufacturers of Staphaseptic, Safe4Hours, Dr. Tichenor’s and CleanWell products had suggested that various gels, protectants and what-not could protect against infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The FDA takes issue with that.

It wasn’t too enamored with claims about preventing infection from E. coli or the flu either.

The letter to one of the companies, which claimed their product kills 99.9% of MRSA, gives the general tone: “Below is an analysis of the regulatory status of Staphaseptic First Aid Antiseptic/Pain Relieving Gel which includes excerpts of the violative labeling and the specific new drug and misbranding charges. Note that this is not an all inclusive description of all violative labeling for your OTC drug product.”
