Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE, @MaureenSRN #Florida #Nursing #Entrepreneurs #nurseup #nursefriendly

Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE, Florida Nursing Entrepreneurs
(Welcome to our newest edition to NursingEntrepreneurs.com)

Nursefriendly Entrepreneur Registration Form
http:// www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/directory.entrepreneurs.florida.sullivan.maureen.stand.up.comedy.htm

In general, the more detailed your responses, the better.

Your Name, Degrees Licenses (Nursing and non-nursing degrees/licenses are fine to list): Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Registered Nurse x 30 years, with a focus on ER/Trauma. I have worked in a variety of roles, including ER Manager, Stroke Program Manager, Trauma Coordinator, and Director of Education. I just published my first book (!) on my nursing career (“Never Again”). It is a compilation of stories of patients I’ve cared for during my career. All true stories!

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? My parents told me I had decided by age 6 that I wanted to be a nurse. I love helping people, and seeing the amazing effects that a caring and compassionate nurse can make in a person’s life.

What is your experience and background in Nursing? . My nursing career has been mostly focused on ER and Trauma. I have also worked as a Legal Consultant for lawyers. A few years ago, I shifted focus on the diabetic population, especially within the Emergency Department, and eventually obtained my CDE.

About 5 years ago, I started doing stand-up comedy, in my nursing uniform! It was well received and I now do professional/corporate stand-up comedy. This new career move has allowed me to give keynote addresses, national conference presentations, and a variety of medical fundraisers. In 2012, I began hosting a weekly internet based health and humor radio show.

“The Health and Humor Hour”, Wednesday @ 730pm EST on www.HealthInfoRadio.com

Would you recommend Nursing as a career? I highly recommend nursing as a career. I personal can’t think of any other “career” that interests me as much as nursing. Having my nursing license has given autonomy, independence, unlimited job opportunities, and a lifetime of memories.

Your Business Name (if applicable): www.MaureenSullivanRN.com

E-mail Address: Maureen@MaureenSullivanRN.com

Social Media

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MaureenSRN

Linkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/maureen-sullivan/50/9b1/552

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/maureen.sullivan.1441

Type of business categories would you would like to be listed (no maximum, we make up new categories frequently for registrants): Author, Writer, Legal Nurse Consultant, Stand Up Comedian, Diabetes Education

Keywords, Phrases that describe your business, experience, services: The more you list the better. Author, Writer, Entertainer, Diabetes Education, Emergency Department, Lecturer, Educator

How did you hear about the Nursefriendly, NursingEntrepreneurs.com?: Twitter!

The year were you first licensed as a nurse? 1981 ?

What school(s) of nursing did you attend? St Mary of Nazareth Hospital School of Nursing

Professional organizations you have belonged to: Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), American Heart Association (AHA), American Diabetes Association (ADA) , American Association of Diabetic Educators (AADE)

How many times have you changed employers in your career? I have changed employers numerous times in my career. I believe that nursing, with its unlimited opportunities, offers a variety of career choices. Nurses, in my opinion, should never feel locked into a career path that no longer interest them. Nursing offers job security, and the ability to network, travel, and explore so many different areas.

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Nurses all possess great organizational skills, documentation skills, as well as leadership and delegation skills. Such skills position nurses for business ownership. Nurses also are trusted by the general population, have mastered public relations, and treat the public with respect. Again, all qualities for a business to become successful!

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: My biggest fear is that nursing will not continue to attract “the next generation”. Reports say that the current generation is seeking jobs with more autonomy, flexibility, and better pay. Nursing requires dedication, and often involves odd shifts, heavy workloads, and less than optimal pay scales. I hope and pray the profession realizes the future is now, and continues to address the issues and work on them in the interest of future healthcare.

Laugh a little, learn a lot: Nurse mixes humor into healthcare talk By Stefanie Dell’Aringa, Monday November 5, 2012, Nurse.com:"On World Diabetes Day, Nov. 14, a woman will deliver a message based on the old adage, "Laughter is the best medicine." Maureen Sullivan, RN, BSN, CEN, CDE, a Florida-based nurse who married her love of comedy with her passion for education, will present a continuing education course on diabetes followed by her comedy show at Coconuts Comedy Club at Jack’s Joint in Clearwater. "I’m sure Michelle Obama will be calling me soon, and I’m still waiting on Oprah to call about my book," Sullivan said, unable to refrain from jesting." http://news.nurse.com/article/20121105/SC02/111120034

Maureen's Profile on Pedagogy Medical:"Approximately 5 years ago, she began doing stand-up comedy and now performs for many corporate events, fundraisers, and health conferences. Her unique background enables her to deliver both entertainment and education from the stage.
In 2011, Maureen became a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and began facilitating several diabetic support groups and giving diabetic community lectures.
In January 2012, Maureen and her spouse began a weekly internet based health radio show, The Health and Humor Hour (www.HealthInfoRadio.com)."

Acid-Base Metabolism; In partnership with Medidactic, Capra Dalton, #RN @pedagogymedical #nurseup #nursefriendly:"Learning acid-base metabolism has always been a challenging task for healthcare students, both nurses and physicians. Nevertheless, as acid-base disturbances are life threatening and demand rapid analysis and correction, their understanding is of critical importance.
The acid-base Insight Generator™ was designed to endow the students with both the knowledge and understanding of acid-base metabolic disturbances and a sense of competence. The courseware consists of interactive chapters, gradually progressing from biochemical introduction to interactive, clinical case scenarios. At scenario stage the students must first diagnose the clinical problem (i.e. a panic attack giving rise to hyperventilation), then diagnose the acid-base disturbance according to the lab results (i.e. respiratory alkalosis) and last decide on appropriate means of intervention (i.e. means for closed-loop respiration).

Abusive Psychiatric Patient Restrained, Placed In Seclusion For Angering Nursing & Medical Staff? #Nurseup #Abuse #MHSM #MH #nursefriendly

Abusive Psychiatric Patient Restrained, Placed In Seclusion For Angering Nursing & Medical Staff? Summary: In dealing with violent, abusive or angry psychiatric patients, the safety of the patient and staff are the priority concerns. When restraints or seclusion are deemed necessary, justification for the measures must be documented concisely. In this case, an unruly patient angered the nurse caring for him. When leather restraints were applied and maintained for a prolonged period of time, the patient would object and later sue for damages.

Overweight doctors and nurses 'should be given stomach stapling surgery because they are a bad example to patients:"Doctors and nurses who suffer from weight problems should be offered gastric surgery in order to retain credibility with patients on weight loss treatments, a report will say.

Overweight NHS staff ought to be given dietary advice and counselling as well as stomach stapling operations as they are setting a bad example for patients, the Royal College of Physicians said.

Over half of medical staff within NHS organisations are likely to be overweight, in accordance with statistics for the British population.

A Patient Is Rescued, Quietly, @theresabrown, #oncology #nursing #nurses #nursefriendly #nurseup #cphc:"A real-life hospital emergency tends to be less obviously dramatic — and much more scary. A few weeks ago I had a patient in significant distress. This is the story of how we saved him.

He’d been admitted for a scheduled cancer treatment called a biological response modifier. The name matters only because we consider this class of treatments “hard drugs,” meaning they are very, very toxic. These types of drugs make patients feel so terrible that often after one round, they refuse further doses even when there are no other treatment options."

15 #Healthcare Twitter Hashtags you should follow #nursefriendly #healthcare #patients #nurseup:"Hashtags help facilitate conversations on the popular social media platform, help other users discover what discussion topics are trending and are an extremely useful tool in focusing on information that’s important while excluding what isn’t.
But some complain that the hashtag is misused and misunderstood.
The hashtag is incredibly important as it is the sole way of providing context to the content you are posting,” said Quora user Mike Vosters. However, it is subject to criticism as a large portion of Twitter users are not educated on its true purpose, and use it as a sort of punchline at the end of their tweet."
