Concerning Amanda Trujillo, RN, Letter To Arizona State Board of Nursing, by Anna Morrison, BA, BSN, RN, CLNC, @icoachnurses #nursefriendly

This form letter is reprinted by permission of Anna, kindly circulate, repost, e-mail to the state board or call :) Andrew Lopez, RN @nursefriendly

My open letter to the AZ BON:

Arizona State Board of Nursing
4747 North 7th Street, Suite 200
Phoenix, AZ 85014-3655

602-771-7800 Phone
602-771-7888 Fax
arizona@azbn.gov Email

http://www.azbn.gov/Default.aspx

To whom it may concern,

In the case of Amanda Trujillo, RN, a profoundly negative and chilling precedent threatens to silence nurses in their efforts to uphold their solemn oaths to protect, educate and advocate for their patients.

Additionally, a patient's Right to Know and Right to Self-Determination are directly in jeopardy.

National Nursing groups, Patients' Rights Advocacy groups, and the media have been put on alert and are watching this case carefully, hoping that the AZ BON makes the right choice to support the education and interventional activities of a nurse, who discovered a severe knowledge deficit in her patient and operated within her scope to rectify it.

It would be a shameful to set a precedent that re-defines our profession and the collaborative health care model that we thought we operated in for the good of our patients.

I respectfully request that you consider dropping the complaint filed against Amanda Trujillo's license and the case against her.

Best regards,
Anna Morrison, BA, BSN, RN, CLNC

Arizona Nurse Has License Threatened By Doctor After Providing Patient Education

arizonanurseThere are times in my nursing career when I am so very proud of how far we have come in advancing our profession. Unfortunately, there are also times where I am reminded that this is still very much an uphill climb we must make in order to legitimately participate in truly collaborative healthcare. Today is one of those days in which I am reminded we still have battles to win.

The following blog post is related to an email that was originally sent to @EchoHeronAuthor. It was then posted on  Vernon Dutton’s Posterous, Amanda Trujillo case will go before the Arizona State Board of Nursing  on January 24th, 2012.

Her story is one of an archaic medical model in which the doctor’s word is supreme and we are all just nurse maids here to do their bidding. This is an indication that there are many who do not wish to continue to advance toward collaborative healthcare in which we work as a team to provide patients with the best care possible. This is also an example of persons who may not be in medicine for the right reasons.

Success in healthcare is not defined by how many treatments and tests you can perform on a patient. Success is defined by the ability to help a patient make informed decisions on their path in health an life. If that path includes surgery, then so be it. If that path does not, and we have informed the patient of all the options and they are capable of making an informed and rational decision, then we have been successful.

I’m really disgusted that a healthcare organization would bow to the tantrum of one very arrogant and immature physician. If there was one example of a surgeon with a God-Complex, this is one.

I encourage you to read the email and case below and to reach out to Amanda Trujillo (@FYRHONEYBSN on twitter) to show her your support. We need patient advocates like her to take care of us. Do you want your loved ones to have the right of choice in their healthcare stripped away from them by a detached physician?

You can also email the Arizona State Board of Nursing and let them know you are following Ms. Trujillo’s case: arizona@azbn.gov

How many times have you changed employers in your career? I have changed employers only 3 times in my career.

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Perseverance, Open mind, empathy, strictness, research minded, confidence.

View previous responses: http://www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/qualities

Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I currently practice as a media television producer and host to educate the public on medical issues.

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: Lack of knowledge given in Nursing schools on both theory and practice. Lack of surgical experience and sterile technique. There appears to be a lack of followup. Too many hours spent studying on non medical/nursing subjects. I am also concerned about the changes in health care eliminating time in hospitals etc.

View previous responses: http://www.nursefriendly.com/concerns/

How do you feel the coming nursing shortage (as baby boomer enter the healthcare system, and nurses retire in droves) will affect patient care? The retiring experienced nurses will leave a big gap in the health care system. Both their previous education and experience have saved many lives the dedication and education now appear to lack these attributes.

Categories Illnois Nurses Age Discrimination Takes Its Toll by Paula Span, January 12, 2012, 12:07 pm:"Raise your hand if you’ve felt that people treat you with less respect or courtesy than others, that they act as if you’re not smart, that you get poorer service in stores and restaurants than others — in short, if you’ve felt discriminated against because of age, gender, ethnicity, income, disability, appearance, even marital status. A startling proportion of older people report that they’ve experienced discrimination: 63 percent, in a study recently published in Research on Aging. The most commonly cited cause? “Thirty percent report being mistreated because of their age,” said the lead author Ye Luo, a Clemson University sociologist. Perceived discrimination because of gender, race or ancestry, disabilities or appearance followed in smaller proportion"

"Would You Recommend Nursing" by Annette Tersigni RN, The Yoga Nurse:"Nursing is a calling. I am a non-traditional nurse and I recommend non-traditional nursing. I was called when I was 48 years young and graduated at 51. The smartest move I ever made in my life. Becoming a nurse was not what I expected though. The 'eating your young thing.' Yikes! I was and am still a yoga teacher, all about 'expanding consciousness' loving kindness, compassion. Sadly I found that the nurses I first worked with at a big 'law dee da' famous hospital were less than supportive. Then I moved to a small town in North Carolina with a 140-bed hospital. It all changed. The nurses there were awesome and helped me to become a competent cardiac nurse."

Patient information is electronically captured at the bedside and uploaded over the internet to secure servers. Reducing Medication Errors: A Focus on the Med Pass, Capra Dalton RN, CEO, Pedagogy Incorporated:"Recent studies have shed light on the growing problem of medication errors within our healthcare system. It is important that all healthcare providers be familiar with the extent of the problem, both the high error rates and the potentially serious consequences. This knowledge is needed to facilitate active participation in implementing effective strategies and changes in attitudes to decrease these error rates. Errors are in effect a breakdown of a system and not the sole responsibility of any one individual. Designed for the licensed nurse and certified medication aide, this course will provide information on the scope of problem, the cause and the prevention of medication errors. With a focus on the current best practices of medication preparation and administration this course will enhance understanding of the survey process and remedies the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) may enforce. The goal is to reduce facility medication error rates in order to provide safe medication administration to residents."

Lab Tests Online, American Association for Clinical Chemistry:"The work of the clinical laboratory professional - who analyzes many things in the body including chemical indicators, the health of blood cells, and the presence of microbes and genetic markers - has long been an unseen aspect of health care. Yet, clinical lab tests often provide the link between the patient's presentation of symptoms and the doctor's diagnosis of and prescribed treatment for a particular condition or disease. Through preventive screening, lab tests also aid in the early detection of potentially fatal conditions and, in so doing, lead to early treatment. In short, lab tests can help both to save lives and to improve the quality of life.
Lab Tests Online has been designed to help you, as a patient or family caregiver, to better understand the many clinical lab tests that are part of routine care as well as diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases. If you are a medical professional, this site can serve as a quick reference tool or as a resource for keeping up with advances in laboratory science. Age Discrimination Takes Its Toll by Paula Span, January 12, 2012, 12:07 pm:"Raise your hand if you’ve felt that people treat you with less respect or courtesy than others, that they act as if you’re not smart, that you get poorer service in stores and restaurants than others — in short, if you’ve felt discriminated against because of age, gender, ethnicity, income, disability, appearance, even marital status.

Alzheimer's Disease Research, American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF):"Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder with no known cause or cure. It attacks and slowly steals the minds of its victims. Symptoms of the disease include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, personality changes, disorientation, and loss of language skills. Always fatal, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of irreversible dementia. Approximately 100,000 victims die and 360,000 new cases of Alzheimer's disease are diagnosed each year. It is estimated that by 2050, 14 million Americans will have this disease. America is not alone in dealing with this terrible affliction. In every nation where life expectancy has increased, so has the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is becoming tragically common. It is estimated that by 2020, 30 million people will be affected by this devastating disorder worldwide and by 2050, the number could increase to 45 million."

National Association of Geriatric Nursing Assistants:"The National Association of Geriatric Nursing Assistants was formally established in 1995 by former certified nursing assistants Lori Porter and Lisa Cantrell. Initially working as CNAs, both moved up the nursing home management ladder, Lori eventually becoming a licensed nursing home administrator and Lisa a director of nursing. Throughout their careers, they remained focused on their years as CNAs, realizing that nursing assistants are both the backbone and the heart and soul of the nursing home profession."
