In 2008, Dr. Arafiles joined the staff of Winkler County Hospital (WCH). It did not take too long for it to become apparent that there were serious problems with this particular doctor. Mitchell and Galle, who worked in quality assurance were dismayed to learn that Dr. Arafiles would abuse his position to try to sell various herbal remedies to patients in the WCH emergency room and the county health clinic and to take supplies from the hospital to perform procedures at a patient’s home rather than in the hospital. No, it wasn’t the fact that Dr. Arafiles recommended supplements and various other “alt-med” remedies, it’s that he recommended supplements and various other “alt-med” remedies that he sold from his own business–a definite no-no both ethically and, in many states, legally. Mitchell reported her concerns to the administration of WCH, which did pretty much absolutely nothing."

Why Are Nurses Singing the Blues? Amanda Trujillo, MSN, RN, June 27, 2012 #nurseup #nursefriendly:"I recently read an article written by Debra Wood, RN, a contributor to Nursezone (dot)com. (you can read it here) The topic was a study that reported an alarming percentage of registered nurses who are suffering from depression. I believe she referenced 18% of nurses polled in a study reported symptoms of depression—in comparison to 9% of U.S. adults who have reported having depression. She posed a reasonable question: Why is this happening? Many of us who have worked at the bedside recently or are currently practicing at the bedside can recite at least ten or more reasons easily. My number one response is: the evolution of Corporate Nursing. I’ve blogged about this “new” specialty of nursing that has been developing over the course of years as the healthcare system has become more complex."

"While outrageous and seemingly unjust, Amanda's situation is not unique. I have stacks and stacks of files in my office with Accusations from the California BRN which include horribly damning language against the nurse, much of which, according to the nurse, is stretched, fabricated, embellished or just downright wrong. These accusations are not sent to me by the client. They don't have to be subpoenaed. They aren't sent to our lawyers because we are the named counsel of record, no. They are public record easily accessible on the BRN's website for everyone including my grandma and 11 year old son to read. Keep in mind, at this stage they are still only ACCUSATIONS.

Nothing has been proven, but regardless, the accusation with its condemning statements is there for all to see. What about being innocent until proven guilty? Is this a fair process? Or is this abuse?"

Why Nurses are Furious about the Amanda Trujillo Case, Those Emergency Blues, @torontoemerg #nurseup #nursefriendly:” The case of Amanda Trujillo has generated a great deal of passionate commentary across the nursing blogosphere. Trujillo, as you may well know, is the nurse who was fired by Banner Health Del E. Webb Medical Center for requesting multi-disciplinary hospice care case management consult for a pre-transplant patient with end-stage liver disease. The request angered the patient’s physician — not the transplant surgeon, incidentally, nor someone with any knowledge of transplant surgery — who complained to Trujillo’s manager. After her termination, the hospital subsequently reported her to the Arizona State Board of Nursing for exceeding her scope of practice. If the Board finds against Trujillo, she may well face the loss of her license or other sanctions; in the event, her nursing career would be finished. Superficially, at least, an open and shut case, or least this is how Banner Health would like to project the controversy. Scratch the surface a little and matters change considerably.”
