Nurse with TV show shares her stories – (Karon White Gibson, #RN) #nursefriendly #nursingentrepreneurs #nurseup:”From ailing celebrities and injured emergency room gang-bangers to children tossing their cookies after turbulent amusement park rides, Karon White Gibson has “pretty much seen it all” as a nurse, she says.
Since the late 1960s the native Chicago southsider now living in Carillon with husband, Ralph, has worked at Chicago hospitals, the Old Chicago amusement park in Bolingbrook, and now hosts a cable television show titled “Outspoken With Karon” that is viewed in several suburbs.
She also is the author of “Nurses on Our Own”, a nonfiction novel detailing many of the incidents that have shaped her life.

Nurse fired for being a patient advocate, Amanda Trujillo – @avoidmederrors @PatIyer #nurseup #AmandaTrujillo #nursefriendly:”The story of Amanda Trujillo is a horrifying one. Briefly, she is a single mom who fought to get off welfare and fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. Not only did she become a nurse, she earned a masters and doctorate degree in nursing. One night while working at Banner Health in Arizona, she took care of a patient who was being asked to undergo a liver transplant. In talking to the patient, Amanda learned that the patient did not fully understand what was going to occur. Amanda educated the patient. She explained the option of hospice instead. The patient decided against the transplant. Then the physician came in, had a well- witnessed tantrum at the hospital when he found out his patient had decided against surgery, and Amanda was fired by the hospital. Her case came up for review by the Arizona Board of Nursing. The summary of her case written by the attorney representing her is below. Amanda has been devastated in terms of her career and her finances. She is back on welfare, her dream of being a nurse shattered.”

Nursing Duty To Patient, ”Does Not Guarantee” Safety Or Quality Of Care.:”Summary: When a nurse accepts report and responsibility for the care of a patient a duty to the patient is also accepted. This duty is to provide a reasonable standard of care as defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the individual state and the facility Policy & Procedures. In this case, a post-op abdominal aneurysm repair patient was injured after falling from his bed to the floor. When a lawsuit was filed the court initially mistook expert testimony to imply the role of the nurse includes a guarantee of safety.

During their eight to 12-hour hospital shifts, they are at the patient’s beside, administering treatments, tending to their patients’ needs, and making critical decisions in their care.
In addition to providing crucial patient care, many nurses also act as strong advocates of polices to improve the health of patients and their communities, to conduct research, and to educate.
So it is fitting that each year we honor their contributions and their compassion during National Nurses Week, celebrated annually from May 6 through May 12 — the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

The nurse’s name is Amanda Trujillo, a single mother living in Phoenix, and licensed nurse in Arizona since 2006. She specializes in cardiology, geriatrics, and end of life/palliative care. The sin she supposedly committed was setting up a consultation on hospice care for a patient suffering from end-stage liver disease, who was scheduled for surgery. This “interference” angered the patient’s physician, who then had Amanda fired and reported her to the Arizona State Board of Nursing, where she is now in danger of losing her nursing license. Fellow health care professionals and patient advocates are flooding the blogosphere in support of her cause!”

That’s what Amanda Trujillo said she was doing last April when she spoke with a patient on the eve of their surgery.
”I discovered that they had a very big misunderstanding about what they were about to participate in,” Trujillo told CBS 5 News.
Trujillo, a licensed nurse in Arizona since 2006, said she advised the patient of possible complications.
The patient decided to delay the surgery and reconsider his or her options.”

This woman has gone so far to be where she and to let someone…. Anyone do this is to her or anyone of us is terrible. And what makes it worse is that the state board is not backing her when she followed protocol and did her job. This is disheartening to say the least. Many times I have discussed the questions with my patient when they didn’t quite understand, and the physician was just very happy to have me around so they did not have to come back to explain further because their team member came through for them. I follow protocol and it sure sounds like she did as well. I have heard what she had to say and just by the information that I have read its sad that she gave hospital education for the patient to review and I’m not quite sure why she consulted a supervisor, but she did that too. We must support one another when another team member steps out of line like that particular doctor did or so it sounds from what I read online from her description of what took place. Keep your head up, I am another supporting you from California. I will pass this on for awareness. I’m sorry anyone has to go through something like is. ”
