Frozen shoulder: Teri Hatcher has frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis - Health Key

The television show "Extra" is reporting that "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher suffers from a disorder called frozen shoulder. Hatcher told the program that frozen shoulder "is a real condition which women get. It's basically left me pretty much not functioning with my left arm...I can't hook a bra anymore."
So what else do we know about frozen shoulder?
According to the website of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, occurs when the shoulder capsule -- the strong connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint -- gets inflamed, thickens and tightens. Often, someone with frozen shoulder also has less synovial fluid to lubricate the joint.

Drugs: Spending on prescriptions is slowing - Health Key

mericans consume a lot of prescription drugs. And they seem especially fond of those to lower their cholesterol, relieve their heartburn, cheer them up and take away pain. Overall, however, their spending on such drugs is slowing.
A new report from consulting firm IMS Health offers a quick, but thorough, look at Americans' consumption of, and spending on, prescription drugs. In 2010, the report says, we spent more than $307 billion on medication. That’s up over 2009, but only by 2.3%.
The report’s introduction frames the trend nicely: “A number of factors contributed to this comparatively and historically low growth, including fewer patient visits to doctors’ offices, patent expirations for branded products, expanded usage of existing generic products and less spending on new products.”
Now, drum roll, please...Here are the top five classes of drugs prescribed in America:

Super bug bacteria in meat and poultry, study says - SmartPlanet

Meat and poultry inspectors usually look for many types of multi-drug-resistant bacteria, but staph is often times overlooked. The bacteria can cause skin infections and can lead to more serious illnesses such as pneumonia and sepsis.

Here’s a summary of what the study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, found:

half of the meat sold in grocery stores are contaminated with S. aureus

one in four samples were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics

methicillin-resistant staph was found in three of the samples

the staph are resistant to up to nine different antibioitics, making it hard to treat

However, The New York Times reports that “federal health officials estimate that staph accounts for less than 3 percent of all food-borne illnesses. In a statement Friday, the American Meat Institute said the study was misleading.” Businessweek reports staph infections occur only three percent of the time and are not nearly as common as other foodborne illnesses like salmonella and E. coli.

A study out of the University of Rochester suggests an outdoor romp in a natural setting — even for 10 minutes — can significantly improve your mood, increase your energy levels and make you a nicer person.
“Data shows that even 10 minutes outside will increase your feelings of wellness and vitality as long as you’re paying attention to nature,” says Dr. Richard Ryan, one the study’s authors. “People feel they’re more autonomous and integrated when they’re outside, more in touch with themselves, [so their increased niceness] is partly a reflection on that.”
Ryan, whose research focuses on personality development and well-being, started exploring the relationship between nature and mood when participants in his clinical trials reported higher levels of energy and vitality after spending time outside.

Sports Injury Expert Warns Kids Are Being 'Driven To The Brink'

A leading sports injury expert says many young athletes are being 'driven to the brink' by coaches.
Vel Sakthivel, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, has warned the pressure on budding youngsters to perform is contributing to a rise in injuries among under-16s.
"We are seeing an increase in the number of sports injuries in children each year, ranging from serious ligament damage and fractures, to strains and sprains, and the pressure applied by coaches is to blame on many occasions," he said.

Popular birth control pills may boost clot risk (Yasmin, Yaz-Drospirenone )- Health - CBC News

Two of the most popular birth control pills available in Canada — Yasmin and Yaz — carry a higher risk of serious blood clots than some other oral contraceptives, two new studies say.

The studies — both published Thursday in the online edition of the British Medical Journal — show that pills containing a new type of progestogen hormone called drospirenone carry up to triple the risk of serious blood clots (known as venous thromboembolisms) over an older generation of pills containing a hormone called levonorgestrel.

Drospirenone is the key ingredient in Yasmin and Yaz, which are manufactured by Bayer and widely prescribed in Canada.

Drospirenone-based pills like Yasmin and Yaz had worldwide sales of $2 billion US in 2009, reports indicate.

A team of veterinary researchers in California recently warned against allowing pets to sleep with their owners, citing studies showing that this practice can favor the transmission of a number of diseases. Their search of medical literature turned up cases of meningitis, staphylococcus infections, bubonic plague, Chagas disease (caused by a parasite and spread to animals and humans from infected bugs) and cat-scratch disease that were passed from animals to humans via licking, kissing or sleeping in the same bed. But they conceded that cases of serious infections passed from animals to humans in this way are rare.
