Unprotected Wi-Fi getting owners in trouble - CBS News

Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of "pedophile!" and "pornographer!" stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn't need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents.

That new wireless router. He'd gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought.

"We know who you are! You downloaded thousands of images at 11:30 last night," the man's lawyer, Barry Covert, recounted the agents saying. They referred to a screen name, "Doldrum."

"No, I didn't," he insisted. "Somebody else could have but I didn't do anything like that."

"You're a creep ... just admit it," they said.

Law enforcement officials say the case is a cautionary tale. Their advice: Password-protect your wireless router.

Caution urged as smartphone technology expands into medicine and health - Philly.com

The airline passenger was in deep trouble - not breathing, no heart rate - when a fellow passenger, Raina Merchant, then a resident in emergency medicine, tried to save his life.

"The patient survived the flight, but, sadly, not much longer," said Merchant, who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the passenger.

That was seven years ago.

Now Merchant, a University of Pennsylvania physician whose research centers on resuscitation, is developing a mobile-phone app that would, with one push of a button, provide oral instructions for CPR. The app would even say, "Press, press, press," to allow the right rhythm for chest compressions.

Contagious Habits: How Obesity Spreads | Wired Science | Wired.com

A few years ago, Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler made a striking discovery about obesity: it spreads from person to person, much like a contagious virus. They were able to demonstrate this by mining the data sets of the Framingham Heart Study (FHS), a longitudinal survey that has revealed many of the risk factors underlying cardiovascular disease. Because the FHS noted each participant’s close friends, colleagues, and family members, Christakis and Fowler were able to recreate the social network of the town, to see how everyone was connected to everyone else.

And this is when they made their remarkable discovery about weight gain. According to the data, if one person became obese, the likelihood that his friend would follow suit increased by 57 percent. (This means that the network is far more predictive of obesity than the presence of genes associated with the condition.) If a sibling became obese, the chance that another sibling would become obese increased by 40%, while an obese spouse increased the likelihood that the other spouse would become obese increased by 37%.

The Christakis/Fowler work is an important reminder that Donne was right: No man is an island/entire of itself. Instead, we are all plugged into a vast network of social contacts and cultural norms. While we think ourselves as autonomous individuals, that autonomy is severely constrained by those around us.

But this longitudinal data – it’s a bird’s eye view of human life – still begs the question: How do other people influence us? Why does an obese friend make us so much more likely to gain weight? Why do the habits of others influence our own habits?

Disaster Relief Nursing - Articles Archive - RN Jobs, Nursing Articles, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino

Serving as a disaster relief nurse can be a life-changing experience. It is a challenging undertaking, and not everyone is physically, emotionally or professionally prepared to assume such a role, be it short- or long-term in nature. But for those who can, the rewards are many.

Some nurses work full time for organizations whose only mission is to assist in relief efforts, while other nurses volunteer when disaster strikes, such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Being deployed to such areas can be disorienting and overwhelming. Volunteers may face primitive conditions, lack of running water, inadequate food and shelter and any number of challenges. Although deployed nurses may expect to be utilized clinically, they may sometimes find themselves taking out trash, sweeping a floor, distributing clothing or leading support groups.

A Nurse Practitioner With a Mission

Betty Woods, a family nurse practitioner from Sonoma County, has an impressive disaster relief resume. In her daily life, she volunteers as a family nurse practitioner for the Jewish Community Free Clinic in Rohnert Park, Calif.; in her weekly life she also takes part in construction projects for Habitat for Humanity.

Woods has staffed Red Cross shelters in Northern California during periods when the Russian River caused widespread flooding and devastation, and she has served in many crucial capacities in troubled areas around the world.

Nurse as Writer, Writer as Nurse Theresa Laurel Brown, BA, MA, PhD, BSN, RN, OCN®

Nurse as Writer, Writer as Nurse

Theresa Laurel Brown, BA, MA, PhD, BSN, RN, OCN®

The first column I ever wrote for The New York Times, called “Perhaps Death Is Proud, More Reason to Savor Life,” generated a firestorm of attention. Literary agents sent me e-mails, my piece hit The New York Times “most e-mailed” list, and within three days I’d been offered a book contract with a major publisher.

The column described a sudden and grisly cardiac arrest where a patient with lung cancer exsanguinated. I felt happy and lucky when The New York Times accepted it. I thought the piece would come out and my friends would read it, and that’s where the endeavor would end. Instead, from that one piece, I ended up becoming a professional writer about nursing. My book, Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between (HarperCollins), was published in June 2010 and comes out in paperback in April 2011. In addition, I am a regular contributor to The New York Times’ Well blog.

Whenever I talk about my two careers, people often ask the same questions. I have answered some of those recurring questions here, in part, because that is what interests other nurses, but also because those questions get at the heart of how I combine these two very different jobs.
