Tobacco-Free Hiring in Workplaces - NYTimes.com
Smokers now face another risk from their habit: it could cost them a shot at a job.
More hospitals and medical businesses in many states are adopting strict policies that make smoking a reason to turn away job applicants, saying they want to increase worker productivity, reduce health care costs and encourage healthier living. The policies reflect a frustration that softer efforts — like banning smoking on company grounds, offering cessation programs and increasing health care premiums for smokers — have not been powerful-enough incentives to quit.
The new rules essentially treat cigarettes like an illegal narcotic. Applications now explicitly warn of “tobacco-free hiring,” job seekers must submit to urine tests for nicotine and new employees caught smoking face termination.

Young Adults' Beliefs About Their Health Clash With Risky Behaviors
Nine out of 10 Americans between ages 18-24 believe they're living healthy lifestyles - yet most eat too much fast food, drink too many alcoholic and sugar-sweetened beverages and engage in other behaviors that could put them at risk of stroke, according to an American Stroke Association survey released today. The results are part of a survey of 1,248 Americans ages 18-44 on their attitudes about health, including influences of and beliefs about health behaviors and their risks for stroke.
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in America.
Eight in 10 people between ages 25-44 years old believe they're living healthy lifestyles and are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors than 18-24 year olds participating in the survey.

Protestors fight immigrant exclusion in health bill - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-
While lawmakers Monday hammered out differences on health care legislation in the Statehouse, supporters rallied outside -- throwing a last minute glitch into the works. They want illegal workers covered under the plan. But that could put the state at odds with the federal government.
In the final legislative days, single payer advocates rallied, speaking for people not here -- foreign workers in Vermont illegally.
"To me universal means universal and those without status should be covered," said Robert Appel with the Vermont Human Rights Commission.
There are an estimated 2000 workers without documents in Vermont. Many work on dairy farms. Without them, officials say the state's dairy industry would die, and advocates say these illegal workers should be given coverage under the state's move to a single payer health care plan, arguing it will avoid more costly emergency care later that people with insurance end up paying anyway.

What Nurses Wish You Knew - Philadelphia Magazine - phillymag.com
No matter what health-care reform winds up looking like, one thing’s certain: Nurses will play a bigger role than ever, taking over duties from doctors, moving out of hospitals and into the community, looking after frail aging boomers, leading the push to keep costs down and improve outcomes. So this seemed the perfect time for a consult with the people who really run health care in Philadelphia. As one nurse told us, “Doctors only think they’re the quarterbacks.” Here’s what nurses had to say about their work, their patients, life and death, and those little white caps they used to wear.1 // It’s okay to buzz // Really. Go ahead. Room too cold? Need a pillow? Got a question about your meds? Use the buzzer; that’s why they put it there. “My 82-year-old mother was just in the hospital for a stroke,” says Presbyterian Hospital’s Michael Becker, “and she said, ‘I can only hit the buzzer two times a day.’ I asked, ‘Why is that?’ and she said, ‘Because they’re going to get tired of seeing me.’ I said, “No, no, Mom, it doesn’t work that way.’” If somebody’s pushing the buzzer all the time, nurses know there’s a deeper issue and work to address it.
2 // You don’t have to be afraid // Nurses understand that patients often don’t speak up because they feel vulnerable. But when we don’t voice our thoughts, they have no way of knowing what needs improvement—until the patient-satisfaction survey arrives after the fact. And they hate finding out there was something they could have fixed if they’d known about it. “It’s natural to be fearful,” says Pennsylvania Hospital’s Mary Del Guidice, “because you’re lying in bed with all these faces looking down at you. But don’t be afraid of us.”

Opioid-related Overdose Deaths Are a National Epidemic
A report on the increase in unintentional drug overdoses emphasizes the role of nonmedical opioid abuse, but also says physicians share some blame.A recently released report authored by experts from the CDC, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and Duke University Medical Center shows that in 40% of US states, unintentional drug overdoses kill more people than motor vehicle accidents and suicides.
Calling this trend a “national epidemic,” the authors of the report, published on the website of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, wrote that one potential contributor to the dramatic increase in unintentional overdose deaths in the US in the last two decades is that “psychiatrists and many primary care physicians might not be familiar with existing evidence-based guidelines for opioid prescribing or with programs designed to reduce the abuse of prescription drugs such as state prescription drug monitoring programs.”
A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine news release accompanying the publication of the report noted that prescription opioid pain medications “are driving this overdose epidemic,” with data showing that in 2007 “unintentional deaths due to prescription opioid pain killers were involved in more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.”
