Interview with Lea Ann Biafora, MS, RN, OCN, CCM, CPHQ of Beacon Oncology Nurse Advocates, SelfEmployedNurse.com

Interview with Lea Ann Biafora, MS, RN, OCN, CCM, CPHQ of Beacon Oncology Nurse Advocates, SelfEmployedNurse.com:"Being a patient advocate is one of the primary roles of a bedside nurse. However, bedside nurses often experience stumbling blocks when advocating for their patients that are associated with the polices, procedures, and politics of hospital/corporate nursing. So, patient advocacy representatives were developed.
However, if a patient desires a personal patient centered healthcare experience then they might elect to consult with their own private patient advocacy service opposed to a corporate employed patient advocate. Enter Lea Ann Biafora, MS, RN, OCN, CCM, CPHQ a nurse entrepreneur who founded Beacon Oncology Nurse Advocates.
Her advice to nurse entrepreneurs is "If you are interested in starting a business (driven by your nursing knowledge) become knowledgeable within your focused area, be confident that you are knowledgeable in this area, be humble but strong and raise your head high."

Nursing Students, Helping Where It Counts, American Red Cross, #Nurseup

Nursing Students, Helping Where It Counts, American Red Cross:"For more than fifty years, nursing students have been involved in helping the Red Cross deliver critical community services. Volunteering with the American Red Cross is relevant to learning nursing skills and can lead to a lifelong opportunity for service. Follow in the footsteps of some of the most famous nursing leaders. Volunteer today.

The American Red Cross partners with nursing faculty to help students develop basic leadership skills, provide meaningful services and help prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Some of the opportunities for nursing student involvement are listed below; opportunities for student nurse involvement are also described in Helping Where It Counts and Make a Difference: Guidelines for Nursing Student Involvement in the American Red Cross."

Getting An Idea Patented, How To Patent, Patents, Inventors, Inventions, Inventor Resources nursefriendly

Getting An Idea Patented, How To Patent, Patents, Inventors, Inventions, Inventor Resources nursefriendly:"A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by a state to an inventor or his assignee for a fixed period of time in exchange for a disclosure of an invention. The procedure for granting patents, the requirements placed on the patentee and the extent of the exclusive rights vary widely between countries according to national laws and international agreements. Typically, however, a patent application must include one or more claims defining the invention which must be new, inventive, and useful or industrially applicable. In many countries, certain subject areas are excluded from patents, such as business methods and mental acts. The exclusive right granted to a patentee in most countries is the right to prevent or exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the invention."

The Gulf Between Doctors and Nurse Practitioners By Pauline Chen, MD

The Gulf Between Doctors and Nurse Practitioners
By Pauline Chen, MD:"Not long ago, I attended a meeting on the future of primary care. Most of the physicians in the room knew one another, so the discussion, while serious, remained relaxed.

Toward the end of the hour, one of the physicians who had been mostly silent cleared his throat and raised his hand to speak. The other physicians smiled in acknowledgment as their colleague stood up.

“Nurse practitioners,” he said. “Maybe we need more nurse practitioners in primary care.”

Smiles faded, faces froze and the room fell silent. An outraged doctor, the color in his face rising, stood to bellow at his impertinent colleague. Others joined the fray and side arguments erupted in the back of the room. A couple of people raised their hands to try to bring the meeting back to order, but it was too late.

The physician had mentioned the unmentionable."

Report Finds Most Errors at Hospitals Go Unreported, ‪#‎NewYorkTimes

Report Finds Most Errors at Hospitals Go Unreported,‪#‎NewYorkTimes‬:"Hospital employees recognize and report only one out of seven errors, accidents and other events that harm Medicare patients while they are hospitalized, federal investigators say in a new report.

Yet even after hospitals investigate preventable injuries and infections that have been reported, they rarely change their practices to prevent repetition of the “adverse events,” according to the study, from Daniel R. Levinson, inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services.

In the report, being issued on Friday, Mr. Levinson notes that as a condition of being paid under Medicare, hospitals are to “track medical errors and adverse patient events, analyze their causes” and improve care."

Age Discrimination Takes Its Toll by Paula Span, January 12, 2012, 12:07 pm:"Raise your hand if you’ve felt that people treat you with less respect or courtesy than others, that they act as if you’re not smart, that you get poorer service in stores and restaurants than others — in short, if you’ve felt discriminated against because of age, gender, ethnicity, income, disability, appearance, even marital status. A startling proportion of older people report that they’ve experienced discrimination: 63 percent, in a study recently published in Research on Aging. The most commonly cited cause? “Thirty percent report being mistreated because of their age,” said the lead author Ye Luo, a Clemson University sociologist. Perceived discrimination because of gender, race or ancestry, disabilities or appearance followed in smaller proportion"

Women comprise 75% of the nursing home resident population, 97% of professional long term caregivers and the vast majority of family members caring for relatives at home. This demographic reality gives rise to a lot of issues, from healthcare delivery to pay equity and fringe benefits. Ironically, but not surprisingly, the majority of leadership and policy-making positions, both in long term care and in government, are occupied by men. The question becomes: How can we bring women's unique perspectives and situations, as they pertain to long term care, to the full attention of the board rooms, the legislatures, and the executive agencies of the government?"
