What Made You Decide To Start Your Own Business? @HealthyNal @AutoimmuneRN #Nurseup #Nursefriendly

http://www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/why/

New:

What made you decide to start your own business? The more I work with patients and families, the more value I see in my knowledge as a nurse. Health impacts all aspects on an individual's life, as well as those around them. Starting Healthy Now and Later is a way for me to reach beyond the bedside and share this knowledge to improve the health, wellbeing, and life of another.

Leah Korkis, BSN, RN, Healthy Now and Later:"Healthy Now and Later is a free resource for caregivers and those 55+. There they will find information on common health topics, health promotion recipes for special diets, and a nation-wide database of local services and financial aid. For further information or clarification, visitors may also "Ask A Nurse"."

What made you decide to start your own business? Autonomy to help others in a non clinical setting in an effort to hopefully empower them in such a way that they might be able to avoid hospitalization or chronic health Issues. I have been an entreprenuer all of my life and my nursing degree and license allow me to practice in the capacity I have always wanted to: to help others holistically to reach their lifestyle and wellness goals. In addition, I am a relationship type of person and appreciate long term interactions/communication with clients.

Shannon Garrett, BS, RN, CHLC, Shannon Garrett Wellness, @AutoimmuneRN, Tennessee Nurse Entrepreneurs, Health Coaches:"I provide holistic health, wellness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching for women who struggle with the many complexities of living with autoimmune or other chronic health issues. I have a 12 week program I work them through to help them reach their goals and I provide a NANDA wellness care plan for them. I personally have three autoimmune issues and know what these women go through. Medication nor diet are stand-alone treatments. Lifestyle issues are an integral part of healing and I help them work through challenges."

What made you decide to start your own business? I felt the need from the nursing profession for relevant education that is applicable across multiple business fields.

Daniel P. Gracie, DNP, RN-BC, Nursing Informatics Institute, South Carolina Nurse Entrepreneurs:"The Nursing Informatics Institute is a provider of healthcare and nursing informatics. We offer courses on-site in topics such as project management, basics of nursing informatics, and nursing informatics review courses. Additionally we offer online study questions and are working on some books and online learning opportunities for the future."

What made you decide to start your own business? I always knew I wanted to own my own "something" I just never knew what that something was. So I went to school for my master's in business and nursing- just in case that idea came to me! When I left my inpatient role to work at a wellness center, coordinating a physician referred exercise program, I went through a health and wellness coaching program- my first one of two. When I was done the club wanted me to coach their clients there. But I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do- I wanted to coach my own clients in my own business. That "something" had turned into a reality. I am quite independent, motivated, hard-working, committed, and dedicated. I want to make a difference and have an impact on the nursing profession. I want to help our profession rise to a new level. That being said my "coaching" business has turned into so much more- I realized that nurses needed me in many different capacities. So I have turned to speaking, writing, radio show hosting, and many other modalities to be able to help nurses where they are at. I love being a business owner and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Reiki Master, Living Sublime Wellness:"Elizabeth "Nurse Coach" Scala, MSN/MBA, RN is passionate about helping healthcare professionals, nurses in particular, to embody holistic living and embrace self-care. Through her business, Living Sublime Wellness, she writes regularly on the topic of self-care, conducts a free, monthly wellness workshop, and offers both in person and online seminars for busy nurses.
Elizabeth offers group coaching programs, one-on-one coaching, and is the founder of a virtual self-care conference for nurses called the RejuveNation Collaboration. She has written two books for nurses on healthy lifestyle and hosts her own blog talk radio show, the Living Sublime Wellness Show on the Rejuvenation Station.
Being a Reiki Master and daily practitioner of self-Reiki treatment, Elizabeth is available to speak, write, and teach nurses about the balancing and healing effects of Reiki therapy.

Nursing Success Tip: The secret to effective communication, Renee Thompson, DNP, RN, CMSRN @RTConnections, #Nurseup

Nursing Success Tip: The secret to effective communication:" A core foundation of every successful person is the ability to communicate effectively. Good communication skills are often cited as the most important skills organizations look for in their employees.  However, many people struggle to communicate effectively with each other in their work environment.
The good news is that communication is a skill that can be learned. The bad news is that most people don’t.
Successful nurses understand this and spend time improving their ability to communicate effectively."

New Nurse Success Tip, Standing at the Crossroads of your Career, Renee Thompson, DNP, RN, CMSRN, @RTConnections, #Nurseup

New Nurse Success Tip: Standing at the Crossroads of your Career:"When nurses graduate from nursing school, unbeknownst to them, they are standing at a crosswalk. Some nurses will go left and some will go right. This decision will determine how successful, happy and satisfied they are with their decision to become a nurse. This decision will determine if they will become successful and thrive or unsuccessful and burn out."

Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, @Coachscala: What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?, #Nurseup, #Nursefriendly

Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, @Coachscala: What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?:"How I actually got into nursing is a funny story that my mom likes to remind me of all of the time. My senior year of college I was moving into an apartment with two nursing majors. One of them even had a nurse professor at our school for a mother! So needless to say as we were unpacking our stuff and I was standing there telling them I "didn't know what I wanted to do when I grew up" they all put their heads together, the four of them (my two roommates to be, my mother, and her mother the nursing professor) and decided I apply to the accelerated nursing program at my college. So for me, it wasn't so much a "choice" but I am grateful I listened to their guidance every day of my life!

East Jefferson General Hospital sued for wrongful termination. #Nurseup #WorkersCompensation #FiredNurses

East Jefferson General Hospital sued for wrongful termination:"A nurse is suing her former employer claim she was terminated after being injured at work and receiving workers’ compensation.
Dawn McMillion filed suit against Jefferson Parish Hospital Service District No. 2 and Jefferson General Hospital in the 24th Judicial District Court on Dec. 19.
McMillion asserts that she was employed as a registered nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital since October 2005 and was earning in excess of $50,000 including her hourly wage and overtime. The plaintiff alleges that on Oct. 22, 2012 she was exiting a medication room when she injured her elbow on a door frame. She claims she informed the defendant and began to receive workers’ compensation benefits. McMillion claims that due to her worker’s compensation claim she was terminated by East Jefferson General Hospital who alleged that the reason they let her go was that she exhausted her leave time."

Nurses with Disabilities, Patricia Bemis, RN, @PatBemis, #NNBA2014, #Nurseup, #Disabilities, #Disability

Nurses with Disabilities:"Based on the fact that nurses are part of the general population, one could assume that one in every 8.4 nurses might have an employment disability. If that is true, 291,548 nurses are affected.
When I was asked to write an article about nurses with disabilities, I sent an email to my email list and told them I was doing research for an article on nurses with disabilities and I wanted to include some real-life experiences. This is a reprint of that article."

Bullying in Nursing and Its Impact on Care, Medivizor, @RTconnections, @drkdhoffman, #Nurseup, #HorizontalViolence

Bullying in Nursing and Its Impact on Care. Medivizor, @RTconnections, @drkdhoffman:"Do nurses eat their young? Renee Thompson asks.  The answer may surprise you.   “Nurses know we eat our young.  Some nurses think it’s good to “toughen up” the new nurses. In reality it’s not. It decreases confidence and competence. “

Thompson, nurse, author, educator and advocate for workplace change, is making it her mission to bring bullying in nursing to light.  She speaks nationwide to healthcare organizations and academic institutions on bullying.  Thompson has witnessed behaviors ranging from “overt-screaming, yelling and openly criticizing in front of others to covert-sabotage, backstabbing and undermining.” Bullying can be as simple as “being nice to your face, but then complaining about you to other nurses all night” to as complicated as “gathering a “posse” against you.”
