Suture for a Living: More #OrganizedWisdom Un-Fair Play, Ramona L Bates, MD

You may recall that last year I wrote regarding the un-fair use of medical bloggers post and twitter feeds:

Fellow bloggers do you remember Wellsphere? Well, the latest “thief” of our information using our reputations and twitter feeds in a similar way is Organized Wisdom. Check out @laikas recent blog post on the topic: Expert Curators, WisdomCards & The True Wisdom of @organizedwisdom

Organized Wisdom (http://organizedwisdom.com and @organizedwisdom on Twitter) is a 3-4 year old company that uses a similar approach to filter useful health information out of the daily junk. ……

Part of the problem may be that Organized Wisdom doesn’t only share links from “Health Centers”, but also from Wellness Centers (Aging, Diet, Exercise & Fitness etc) and Living Centers (Beauty, Cooking, Environment). Apparently one card can have information for 2 or 3 centers (diabetes and multivitamins for example)

I feel used.

There was a tension in the ER prior to procedure that was palpable. We all held our breath as he entered the room, alligator forceps in hand and performed a QTIPectomy. Yes someone got a qtip stuck in their ear and came to the ER to have it removed. Not only did they come to the ER, but they called 911 to bring them to the ER."

Nurse Practitioner Business Owners blog, Barbara C. Phillips, MN, NP:"Nurse Practitioner Business Owners blog (NPBusiness.ORG) is an idea that was born out the need and frustration for Nurse Practitioners in private, independent practice to be able to connect, share resources, offer support, and learn from one another. It goes beyond that day to day support we give and receive from one another around our professional practice…this goes into the business of being a NP. NPs who have their own practices are breaking the mold for NPs in general as most are still in employed situations (out of preference or necessity). There are also NPs who have broken the "private practice mold" and are working in and outside areas of health care that are new and exciting. NPs have businesses in the educational field, legal field, insurance field, anti-aging field, retail and more."

5 Tips for finding Quality Health Information on the Net, Smallbusinessnurse.com

As more and more Americans are turning to the Internet for their health information, how do you know if the information you are reading is accurate?

Here are 5 helpful tips to consider when looking  for health information online:

1. Look for sites that are well known, associated with a medical center or government agency such as Mayo Clinic or National Institute for Health. These sites are reliable, have up to date information on new treatments, clinical trials and new medications. Health blogs like the New York Times or The Wall Street Journal also give great news information about the healthcare Industry.

Remember some health blogs  may be  reporting their opinion on a health topic. If it’s a fact, the original source should be stated so you can research more on the topic you’re interested in.

The end of a web address can help you determine what kind of site you are on.

  • .gov – US government sponsored site
  • .org – non profit organizations
  • .edu – educational institutions
  • .com – commercial site

101 Blog Posts Every New Nurse Should Read Nurse Practitioner Schools

Nursing requires almost superhuman strength, stamina, and compassion. And due to its nature, none involved in the profession practice in a vacuum. Both students and recent graduates preparing to enter into their studies or career should look to the experiences of their predecessors for information and inspiration. Some have plenty to say about the profession and their particular specializations. Others prefer discussing the education and exams that lead into a nursing career. And still others take to activism and patient advocacy to ensure the needs of the community and their patients are met. All of them have valuable perspectives to offer those starting to dip their comfortable shoe-clad toes into the field.

1. “Uh oh” at code blog

One nurse shares her very first professional experience after graduating, which involves how she dealt with a patient’s relentless requests for excessive pain medication. Those new to nursing ought to ponder over the myriad different patients they will encounter in their careers.

2. “Flight Nurse: A Life of Training and Trauma” at CRZEGRL, FLIGHT NURSE

This guest post by John C. Lee, Jr., SRN reflects upon the responsibilities and experiences of working as a nurse on Lifeflight helicopters. It is one possible career path for nursing students and recent graduates to consider.

3. “The Travel Nursing Cost of Living Calculator” at TravelNursingBlogs.com

All careers – not just nurses – can benefit from this extremely valuable tool, which helps people understand how much they need to make in order to maintain a certain standard of living when transitioning from one city to another.

Change of Address: 40 Top Nursing Home Blogs for Families

40 Top Nursing Home Blogs for Families

It can be a struggle to decide when the timing is right to put a loved one into a nursing home. In general, they aren’t overly thrilled about it and you can understand why as they are giving up some of the independence that they have enjoyed for so long (at least to some extent). That’s really a tough transition for the person going into the nursing home as well as for their friends and family who love and care for them. Part of the concerns stem from the grim news we hear so often about nursing home abuse and other potential ways that our loved one can be taken advantage of (financial scams, isolation, and more). The best thing that we can do is stay informed and make sure that we are vigilant about looking after their care by checking in on them on a regular basis. Another great way is to stay in touch with current events, things to watch for, and more by reading news and blogs related to nursing homes. I put together this list of 40 blogs to help keep you up-to-date on the latest in senior care.

Why doctors and nurses should engage in social media

Instead, the question should be, why shouldn’t you?

Kim McAllister, over at Better Health, gives some good reasons why health professionals should start a blog. But it shouldn’t just be limited to blogging, but the entire spectrum of social media tools, which give health professionals a powerful way to engage both patients and colleagues.

I recently gave a talk to the folks over at the New England Journal of Medicine, discussing the intersection between medical practice and social media. One point I repeatedly made was that it’s to a health professional’s benefit to have some sort of online presence. Not only to engage and provoke discussion, but also to make them pro-active in the information associated with them when their name is Googled.

More patients will be searching for doctors and hospitals via search engines, and being active in blogs, Facebook and Twitter allows you to define your online reputation. Going forward, this will be one of the more important reasons why doctors, nurses, and medical institutions should have a robust social media presence.
