Lights, Camera, Action!

I always get excited when I see or hear a nurse on television or radio. It’s probably because we’re hardly ever there! But it’s also because TV and radio appearances offer nurses the opportunity to show the world how bright, articulate, and knowledgeable we are. And while it’s a scary prospect to be on TV or radio — especially the first time —learning the basics and getting a little experience goes a long way to becoming comfortable in front of the camera or microphone. Here are some tips and advice.

Do your homework: Watch or listen to the program ahead of time to become familiar with the format and the host’s style. It’s also helpful to watch and listen to other guests to see how they answer questions. Talk to the host, producer, or studio assistant beforehand when possible. Ask if the program will be taped or broadcast live and how much time you’ll be on camera. Find out what questions you’ll be asked and who else will be a guest on the show or part of the panel, if applicable. While some talk shows have a discussion format, most news shows have a more structured, prearranged format.

Gearing Up for Management

Are you a staff nurse who aspires to someday move into a supervisory role? Would you like to eventually work in nursing or health care administration? Are you considering a leadership role in a professional association or community group? Here are some steps to get you moving in the right direction.

Have a heart-to-heart talk with your supervisor. Let your supervisor know about your aspirations, and ask for assignments that would help prepare you for that role. Ask your supervisor how he or she got started and what was learned along the way. You can have this discussion during an annual evaluation — or, better yet, make a special appointment to sit down and discuss your career goals.

Work on your formal education. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for most management positions. Having a master’s degree will give you a competitive edge. It’s not just the credential that’s helpful here; it’s the knowledge and skill you’ll acquire pursuing that degree. Nurse managers hold a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees these days, including those in nursing, business, health care management, and public health. There’s no one “right” degree to have.

The Pedagogy Philosophy

Pedagogy is the art and science of teaching, instruction and training. It is the goal of Pedagogy to offer the most current course content, at the highest possible quality, using a variety of education methods and strategies. Attainment of licensure and formal education is not the end of education. Professionals, both practitioners and educators, are responsible to continually develop their knowledge and skills. Through continuing education and self directed professional growth, health care providers are better prepared to deliver quality care to their patients.

Capra Dalton R.N. - CEO

Capra Dalton R.N. has more than 23 years experience in infusion therapy and the instruction of licensed nurses in infusion therapy continuing education. Her experience comes from multiple infusion settings: acute care, ambulatory infusion centers, home infusion, Long Term Care continuing education provider and Quality Assurance Consultant.
She received her nursing education from Lamar University, Texas and graduated in 1986.

Currently she is a member of the Infusion Nurses Society (INS), has served on Nurse Council of the Texas Health Care Association, member of the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Services (NAPNES) as well as the Council of Practical Nurse Educators (COPNE).

Capra is responsible for education course content, and all operational aspects of Pedagogy.

Nursing Education Research Funding 'Frustratingly Low,' NLN Says on ADVANCE for Nurses

The level of funding for nursing education research remains frustratingly low, and new and expanded sources are urgently needed, says the National League for Nursing (NLN) in a new analysis of its own grant program for nursing education research published in the most recent edition of in NLN's Nursing Education Perspectives.

"The level of funding for nursing education research remains frustratingly low, and new and expanded sources are urgently needed," the author's say.

These are among the conclusions in "Advancing Nursing Education Science: An Analysis of the NLN's Grant Program, 2008-2010," the NLN's respected peer-reviewed research journal. While the NLN is among the few supporters of research in nursing education, authors noted, the commitment to scholarship is critical if the future nursing workforce is to be adequately prepared to safeguard patient care in a complex, dynamic health care environment.

The study, "Advancing Nursing Education Science: An Analysis of the NLN's Grant Program, 2008-2010,"  was co-authored by Joanne R. Duffy, PhD, RN, FAAN, a professor at Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis and immediate past chair of the NLN's Nursing Education Research Advisory Council (NERAC), the panel that oversees and awards the grants; NERAC's current chair, Marilyn Frenn, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, an associate professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee; and Barbara Patterson, PhD, RN, a professor at Widner University School of Nursing in Chester, Pennsylvania who sits on NERAC.

DAISY Foundation - Welcome

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The Foundation was formed in January, 2000, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).

Everyone who met Pat even once was touched by his positive spirit and his sense of humor. Twice a survivor of Hodgkin's Disease, Pat was driven by a desire to befriend others and help them in any way he could. His legacy is clear: whenever he came across anyone in need, he never turned his back. He reached out to comfort, to make them feel okay. Pat was a natural mentor, sharing his phenomenally positive outlook on life with a wide network of friends and family around the country with whom he stayed in constant contact. The DAISY Foundation was established to keep his very special spirit alive.

As we brainstormed what to do in Pat's memory, the one really positive thing we could hold onto from the experience of his eight-week illness was the skillful and amazingly compassionate care he received from his nurses - even when he was totally sedated. So we created The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses to recognize the super-human work nurses do every day all over the country. This program achieves one of the four goals we established for The Foundation, the others being

Where are the Nurses Mr. President? Nobody Cares.

To the President of the United States from the Yoga Nurse:

Dear Mr. President,

May I be so bold to tell you in my not-so humble opinion the answer to your question, “Where are the nurses?”  Elementary dear Watson.  Nobody wants the job.  why not? because … “This Job is Killing Me.

As an advocate for nurses, I currently teach meditation, natural stress relief techniques and medical yoga to nurses and nursing organizations through out the country to help them with morale and wellness on the job.  Shockingly, I often hear nurses say these exact words to me: “This job is killing me and I’d kill to get off the floor.” It shocked me because I too said those very words at times in my nursing career, but never out loud, and only to myself.  These words are engraved in my psyche as the global lament of way too many nurses.  Never mind what country, color, religion or background of the nurse, (I have worked in Canada and the USA) it is the same story and not a pretty one.

Why is this job killing me? There are endless reasons why nurses are “dying” from their work and why the job is literally making them sick.  Just a few examples that you can surely relate to: Insufficient staffing, overwork, impossibly long shifts, endless charting, little time for patient care, working with inexperienced nurses, burnt out nurses, slackers, disrespect, conflicts between nurses, nurses and doctors, managers, management, lawsuits and liability, being abused by patients i.e. hitting, biting, scratching, punching, yelling, poor health issues, obesity because the only reward is eating…that is, if you get the chance on any given shift, accusations of improper care, etc. etc. etc… (Your turn, fill in the blanks____. _____. _____.). Enough already, you get the idea.

Whether in real life or reel life, work spouses are out there. You’ve seen them, right? Or maybe you’re in such a relationship: Two people who spend most of their working hours together, behaving like a married couple. But despite subtle overtones of intimacy and affection, this relationship at work is strictly nonphysical and non-romantic.

Having a work spouse is not uncommon. Surveys indicate that an increasing number of employees report being involved in platonic work “marriages,” and in many cases, the work wife or work husband is already romantically partnered outside the workplace. Although such relationships may boost productivity and personal motivation, it’s essential to maintain a chaste and professional bond. Knowing what works and what doesn’t will keep you both on track.

With the Oscars just around the corner, where the members of the entertainment world gather to pat each other on the back, it makes one wonder why nurses don’t have their very own Oscars. After all, many of these awards are handed out to actors who imitate what we do in real life.

In the spirit of recognizing the amazing talents of nurses, we roll out the red carpet here and take a look at 10 reasons why we’re Oscar-worthy.

#1: Nurses have true talent minus the diva attitude.
True talent is a gift, one that is subtle, yet always present. A nurse regularly carries out his duties with confidence, knowledge and good grace in the face of the most difficult or unexpected situations, including code browns.

We all know nurses who have perfected the showstopping Look. It’s the look that’s thrown in the direction of a petulant attending or a whiny visitor.
