Nursing. It’s Not Just a Career – It’s a Calling

Nursing. It’s not just a career – it’s a calling.

My hospital used that as an advertising campaign a few years back. Effective, yes, but is it true?

We think of nursing as a job, our work, a profession (which it is). It’s what we do – a choice we’ve made. Nurses can live comfortably on our incomes and even in hard times, there are usually jobs to be had.

And the variety! E.R. and flight nursing for adrenaline junkies, floor nursing for those gifted in multi-tasking, Intensive Care for techies, hospice, school nursing, home and public health – the list goes on and on.

I went around the unit last week asking random colleagues why they’d become nurses. Had they pro-and-conned their way into the field, decided they needed something to “fall back on” (as my mother used to say), or heard a voice from Heaven?

Gearing Up for Management by Donna Cardillo, RN, MA, Cardillo & Associates

Gearing Up for Management
by Donna Cardillo, RN, MA

Are you a staff nurse who aspires to someday move into a supervisory role? Would you like to eventually work in nursing or health care administration? Are you considering a leadership role in a professional association or community group? Here are some steps to get you moving in the right direction.

Have a heart-to-heart talk with your supervisor. Let your supervisor know about your aspirations, and ask for assignments that would help prepare you for that role. Ask your supervisor how he or she got started and what was learned along the way. You can have this discussion during an annual evaluation — or, better yet, make a special appointment to sit down and discuss your career goals.

Work on your formal education. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for most management positions. Having a master’s degree will give you a competitive edge. It’s not just the credential that’s helpful here; it’s the knowledge and skill you’ll acquire pursuing that degree. Nurse managers hold a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees these days, including those in nursing, business, health care management, and public health. There’s no one “right” degree to have.

Up-and-Coming Nurse Niches - Nursing Link

Megan Malugani | Monster Contributing Writer

A nurse is a nurse is a nurse, right? Wrong. Nursing jobs are extraordinarily varied and diverse. Here’s a snapshot of four specialized nursing niches that even healthcare professionals may know little about.

Correctional Nursing

Nurses who work behind bars with the nation’s 2 million inmates and juvenile offenders deal with a range of medical problems, from toothaches to trauma. “A lot of our clients don’t have access to healthcare easily,” says Gayle Burrow, MPH, BSN, director of corrections health for the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon. “Correctional nurses like the fact that we get to take care of people who need a lot of services and education.”

Because correctional nurses work autonomously – assessing new inmates, helping manage the chronic diseases and mental illnesses of long-term prisoners and responding to acute illnesses and injuries – they must be confident, mature and well-rounded. In addition, they “must have the ability to look at a person not by what they do, but for who they are,” says Burrow, a certified corrections health professional who is on the board of the American Correctional Health Services Association.

In most job-filling situations, the employer has the luxury of choosing from several well-qualified applicants, all of whom could probably do the job. That’s when the little things, like the common but often unrecognized mistakes described here, almost always come into play. Make sure you avoid them, so they don’t cost you a shot at the job.

7 Best Practices For Hospitals and Social Media | Hospital Financial and Business News

Kevin Troutman is a partner at Fisher & Phillips LLP in Houston and serves as the chair of the firm's Healthcare Practice Group. Additionally, Mr. Troutman has more than 17 years experience in healthcare management positions, once serving as the senior HR manager for 22 hospitals in five states. Mr. Troutman outlined seven best practices for hospitals to consider regarding social media and hospital employees.

1. Update your policy to include social media. Roughly one-third of employers have enacted policies that address employees' use of social media sites, says Mr. Troutman. While this number is growing, employers still aren't catching on as quickly as expected, especially since sites such as Facebook or Twitter will never phase out but only evolve. "Hospitals need to address social media — they can't just proceed as though they don't exist," says Mr. Troutman. He said most hospitals already have strong confidentiality policies in place, but these need to be amended to include specific parameters for social media use.

2. Decide how much restriction employees will face while at work. Some hospitals have enacted prohibited social media policies for employees, while others have restricted their use all together. While this decision may vary from hospital-to-hospital depending on the work environment, Mr. Troutman shares some general advice. "Encourage employees to minimize the use of personal websites or personal activity while they are on work time. You have to recognize that, once in a while, employees will need to send a personal e-mail. But generally, the policy should be this: while at work, you do work. "

3. Train supervisors so they don't inadvertently create problems. In the ambiguous realm of friending, private messages and wall posts, supervisors need to anticipate potential problems regardless of their intention. For instance, a supervisor sending a friend request to a lower level employee could set up potential claims of fraternization, harassment, or — in extreme cases — stalking. Mr. Troutman shared an instance where a supervisor signed into a Facebook account under another username to look up an employee's social media activity, which could be considered defrauding the employee or invading his/her privacy.

Healthcare jobs now make up 10.7 % of U.S. employment, study says

Private-sector healthcare now comprises a higher percentage of total U.S. employment than ever before, reaching 10.7 percent, according to a new report from the Altarum Institute.

That figure represents an increase of more than one percentage point since the start of the recession in December 2007, when private-sector healthcare represented 9.5 percent of total employment. The study was done by the Altarum Institute’s Center for Studying Health Spending. The analysis is based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The growth in healthcare jobs contrasts with the rest of the economy. The study shows that while healthcare employment increased 6.3 percent since December 2007, non-healthcare employment has fallen by 6.8 percent.

Charles Roehrig, director of Altarum’s Center for Studying Health Spending, said in a statement that while healthcare jobs have helped offset the declines in other sectors, the health sector is likely to peak in the near future.

“Although health employment will continue to rise, we expect non-health employment will grow more rapidly so that health employment’s share of the total will stabilize,” he said.

Ayurvedic, Ayurveda Certified Nurses, Nursing Entrepreneurs, Nurse-Owned Businesses

Ayurveda has evolved as a self-care system by those who have accepted responsibility for their own health and want a proven model for health and longevity. It offers us an alternative to allowing imbalances to grow into life-threatening diseases and then resisting them with drugs and surgeries. Ayurveda is a holistic science of wellness based on creating harmony between two fundamental complementary forces, movement, observed in respiration, circulation, digestion, elimination and in the nervous system, and stability which provides the structure to support movement. Behind these two forces is the one energy which makes it all happen. Ayurveda works through keeping these forces in balance, which creates harmony with this natural rhythm found in all life. Harmony reflects itself in wellness just as all disease grows from an imbalance. All life forms contain a unique mix of these forces giving them their special character. Thus, because every individual is unique and indivisible, what is balancing for one person's body and temperment, may cause imbalances and disease in another. Ayurveda provides guidelines to determine your individual constitution and for your specific pathways for creating balance. You can begin to look at yourself through these principles by taking a self-test at this website to discover your Ayurvedic constitution.

careerjet.com, About us |

What we are

Careerjet is a job search engine designed to make the process of finding a job on the internet easier for the user. It maps the huge selection of job offerings available on the internet in one extensive database by referencing job listings originating from company websites, recruitment agency websites and large specialist recruitment sites. Using a fast and straightforward interface, users can query this database and save themselves the trouble of visiting each site individually. The job offerings themselves are not hosted by Careerjet and users are always redirected to the original job listing. Essentially, Careerjet acts as traffic driver to those sites.
Careerjet's job search engine network encompasses over 50 countries, featuring separate interfaces that are translated into 20 languages.

Our technology

Careerjet uses smart agents running on a cluster of networked computers that scan the web and identify job listings on the internet such as on company websites which may only list one or two jobs or on larger specialist recruitment sites that feature hundreds of jobs. Those listings are then scanned regularly and the jobs found are added to the job index. Over 58,000 websites are scanned daily.

After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."

Many local nursing grads find local jobs, Utah

A couple of years ago, finding a job as a nurse was a snap.

It's a bit harder now, but thanks to a healthy relationship between the hospitals in Utah County and the local nursing schools, local grads are still doing OK.

Utah had the lowest registered nurse vacancy rate in the country as of May, said David Clark, Intermountain's CEO for the urban south region. Much of that he attributed to the natural feeding system set up because of BYU, UVU, Provo College, Eagle Gate College, Ameritech and other programs that train qualified nurses.

Intermountain Healthcare is the largest health care provider in the state and thus the largest employer of nurses as well.

And he has no problem admitting that Intermountain is a little partial to the nurses who trained "right there in our backyard."

It's not that the process becomes easy, he said.

"They have to earn it based on their own merits," Clark said.

Nurse Recruitment and Retention: Can New Nursing Grads Find Work?

When I was speaking at a hospital, talking to recently recruited nurses, I heard their frustrations in not being able to work in the area of their choice.

Indeed, where once nursing grads could essentially get their first choices and select from several attractive job opportunities, some looking to enter our profession have had to settle for a position different from their goals.

Wise new grads will take this job, giving the best care possible as team player. When the recession ends and cut backs are eased, they can transfer into their position of choice.
