Within the heart of Heaven's home
A special tribute shines
In honor of your "child-nurse" role;
Botanical designs.

On solid crystal, edged in gold
A field of gardens grow
With flowers that astound the eye;
All Angels love to show.

For on this earth you'll never find
A sight of such display
That even Angels stand in awe
Speechless, and in dismay.

You see with tender care you touch
Each child in your command
And something magical takes root
Just like at Disneyland.

A gala show gets on the way
The Angels all adore
As blossoms form in shape of hearts
Up from this garden floor.

And as each blossom does erupt
A tune begins to play
That causes every flower above
To light up, and to sway.

And human eyes have never seen
A velvet heart of red
Nestled within a stem of gold
Upon a crystal bed.

But where the magic truly lies
Is more amazing yet,
Each time your love touches a child
A sight you can't forget.

Like perfect melodies of love
Each flower speaks a name
Of every child in your career
Who's known your nursing fame.

So high above this earthly plain
Majestic flowers grow
In honor of your TLC
And all the love you sow.

When a Nurse Says, "I Don't Care" - Nursing Link

I don’t care.

Those aren’t the words you want to hear coming from the mouth of a nurse.

Now true, nurses are human, and there are things that we don’t care about, but the phrase itself, while on the job, just sounds so… unprofessional.

As nurses, we encounter so many challenges every day. Often times we have to wait on other departments, facilities, or patients. If we are not waiting on something (a lab, a transporter, a phone call), we are rushing to do or get something done ourselves. It’s very much a feast or famine profession. It is rare that things progress and a steady predictable pace. We have those days, but they are few and far between. Most of the time we are constantly trying to balance the push and pull required to deliver good patient care. And sometimes that means being made to wait.

Women living with HIV fight challenges through photography

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but for women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, a picture can help them deal with the challenges of living with the virus.

A University of Missouri researcher is completing a pilot project during which women living with HIV take photos to document their lives. The photos are used to engage women in critical discussions about their lives, identifying both social, mental, and physical challenges and possible solutions for the women. The photos will be presented at two special events. The first event will be held on March 3-6 in Columbia at the True/False Film Festival. The second event will be held on March 19 in St. Louis at the Regional Arts Commission to commemorate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

"Women with HIV face more challenges than most intervention programs are designed to address," said Michelle Teti, assistant professor of health psychology in the MU School of Health Professions. "These women need to discuss more issues than merely how to have safe sex. Many live in poverty, with substandard housing and abusive partners. Helping women understand and address these issues is what this project is all about."

Do You Have a Work Spouse? - Nursing Link

Mark Swartz | Monster Senior Contributing Writer

February 22, 2011

Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa. George Bush and Condoleezza Rice. Stacy and Clinton. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy.

Whether in real life or reel life, work spouses are out there. You’ve seen them, right? Or maybe you’re in such a relationship: Two people who spend most of their working hours together, behaving like a married couple. But despite subtle overtones of intimacy and affection, this relationship at work is strictly nonphysical and non-romantic.

Having a work spouse is not uncommon. Surveys indicate that an increasing number of employees report being involved in platonic work “marriages,” and in many cases, the work wife or work husband is already romantically partnered outside the workplace. Although such relationships may boost productivity and personal motivation, it’s essential to maintain a chaste and professional bond. Knowing what works and what doesn’t will keep you both on track.

The Benefits of Work Spouses

Unfettered by the usual entanglements of an amorous relationship, these partnered colleagues can work together seamlessly and accomplish more, often faster. In addition, work spouses enjoy these benefits

10 reasons nurses deserve an Oscar

With the Oscars just around the corner, where the members of the entertainment world gather to pat each other on the back, it makes one wonder why nurses don’t have their very own Oscars. After all, many of these awards are handed out to actors who imitate what we do in real life.

In the spirit of recognizing the amazing talents of nurses, we roll out the red carpet here and take a look at 10 reasons why we’re Oscar-worthy.

#1: Nurses have true talent minus the diva attitude.
True talent is a gift, one that is subtle, yet always present. A nurse regularly carries out his duties with confidence, knowledge and good grace in the face of the most difficult or unexpected situations, including code browns.

#2: Nurses have The Look.
We all know nurses who have perfected the showstopping Look. It’s the look that’s thrown in the direction of a petulant attending or a whiny visitor. It can stop a tirade cold in its tracks, scare up documents that were deemed “unavailable” and can make grown men tremble in their boots. A real thriller!

In most job-filling situations, the employer has the luxury of choosing from several well-qualified applicants, all of whom could probably do the job. That’s when the little things, like the common but often unrecognized mistakes described here, almost always come into play. Make sure you avoid them, so they don’t cost you a shot at the job.

Can a nurse be too old to work at the bedside? Donna Cardillo, MA, RN - American Nurse Today

Let’s consider the facts: Many nurses are still working at the bedside in their 70s and a few even in their 80s. Granted, every nurse is different and age alone is not an indictor of ability. But the inevitable truth is that the older we get the more we are prone to age-related ailments ,such as Parkinson’s and dementia, which are often undiagnosed. And since nurses, like the rest of the population, are living and working longer (many out of sheer necessity), will those nurses be able to recognize when they are no longer able to do their bedside job to the best of their ability? Can we even see in ourselves when our slowed reflexes, diminished critical thinking skills, and lessened agility hamper our practice and potentially endanger our patients and ourselves?

This does not imply that all nurses should stop working at the bedside at a certain age or that they should stop working at all. It simply raises the question about one’s own ability to continue competent and safe bedside practice indefinitely. This concern comes at a time when 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 each day  — that’s right, each day. And many of them are in the current bedside nursing workforce and are being required to work 12-hour shifts. (See post dated 10/26/10 “Are 12-hour shifts safe?”)

When the Nurse Is a Bully - By Theresa Brown, R.N. - NYTimes.com

It was the end of my shift, and I listened as one of my co-workers was being hassled over the phone for the second time that day. The computer wouldn’t release a patient record, and a nurse in another department was blaming her.

“Why are nurses so mean to each other?” I blurted out.

“Well yeah,” my co-worker said, “It’s that whole ‘Nurses eat their young’ thing.”

Nurses eat their young. The expression is standard lore among nurses, and it means bullying, harassment, whatever you want to call it. It’s that harsh, sometimes abusive treatment of new nurses that is entrenched on some hospital floors and schools of nursing. It’s the dirty little secret of nursing, and it needs to be publicly acknowledged, and just as publicly discussed, because it’s keeping us down.

Registered nurse job seekers will need more advanced degrees, study says

As the nursing job market tightens, candidates for registered nurse positions are increasingly in need of more education to separate themselves from the pack to get hired.

And the jobs that registered nurses end up landing are increasingly likely to come outside of hospitals.

Those are two key findings from the latest biannual study of nursing supply and demand released by the Greater Cincinnati Health Council, a group of hospitals and health systems from the region. The study is based on data gathered from 13 Cincinnati-area hospitals and 10 nursing schools.

In 2010, the vacancy rate for nursing jobs at the hospitals fell to 2.5 percent from 7.3 percent two years earlier, according to a statement from the Health Council. That competitive job market gave employers the luxury of hiring a more educated nursing workforce. The number of nurses with bachelor’s degrees climbed to 41 percent from 33 percent during that time frame, while 12 percent had master’s degrees in 2010, compared with just 3 percent two years earlier.

“Hospitals in our region are beginning to demand more specific degree requirements in order to adapt to changing healthcare trends and meet changing patient-care needs,” said Mary Duffey, executive director of the Council’s Health Care Workforce Center.

In 2008, nearly all new nursing school graduates who stayed in the Cincinnati area and found jobs in healthcare organizations (99 percent) did so at a hospital. But two years later, that number dropped to 80 percent. The Council expects that trend to continue as more emphasis in the U.S. health system is placed on preventive care obtained in the community, and an aging population increasingly moves into long-term care and assisted-living facilities.

The continuation of that trend would put Cincinnati more in line with the rest of the country, in which about 60 percent of nurses work in hospitals, according to the report.

Carolyn Zaumeyer, MSN, ARNP, Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur, By:"Carolyn Zaumeyer, MSN, ARNP is a graduate of Florida International University and President and owner of Women's Health Watch, Inc. Over seven years ago Carolyn ventured into independent nursing practice. When planning her new practice, she did a literature review and was unable to locate any resource material to guide the nurse practitioner in developing her practice. While she was putting together her new venture, she was also keeping detailed notes, hoping that eventually she would be able to help other nurse practitioners interested in independent practice. In 1995 she published the book, "The Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur: How to Establish and Operate an Independent Practice - a reference and resource manual." This book has enjoyed national sales over the years, and many universities and colleges have utilized it as a text. It is now available for sale at our Website, "The Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur". It continues to guide and instruct nurse practitioners on how to establish, organize, and operate an independent nursing practice. Email Carolyn."
