Faced with a New Diagnosis? 10 tips to be your own best advocate, Martine Ehrenclou, @Med_writer #nurseup

Faced with a New Diagnosis? 10 tips to be your own best advocate, +Martine Ehrenclou, @Med_writer:"You’re sitting in your physician’s exam room, clothed in a gown. Your test results are in and you are about to discuss them with your doctor.  You’ve had symptoms that prompted those tests and worst-case scenarios are flooring the accelerator on your fears. Your doctor walks in and greets you with a smile and asks how you are, a question you’d be happy to answer after she discloses the results.

Your physician introduces a diagnosis that requires treatment, perhaps a few more tests or even a procedure. While your thoughts are tripping over the medical information, the image of your kids at school comes to mind along with the question, “Who will pick them up if I’m undergoing treatment?” You’re now ten steps ahead of the doctor, plotting what to do next. Should you surrender and simply let the doctor handle everything? Not exactly."

The Medical Quack: HealthGrades And Other MD Rating and Referral Sites List “Dead Doctors” on Their MD Information Pages And Even Include the Insurance Plans the “Dead Doctors” Honor

This just goes to show you can’t really believe every thing you read on the web.  I came across this by accident when doing some searches relative to the Medical Quack.  I went to an obgyn doctor for many years and was very happy with her and would still be a patient today except for the fact that she unfortunately passed away from breast cancer.

image[4]

These sites are supposed to “rate and “help” people but I am not convinced how valuable they are when I see my former physician who has been dead for around 6 years still listed and according to the site, she takes HealthNet.  You can read on the site about the focus on helping hospitals with marketing and other software and management areas of business.  I guess they are too busy marketing to look for a little bit of accuracy here with the physicians they provide information for.  Marketing captures all today.  I did call her old phone number out of curiosity and it said it had been disconnected so goodness forbid that phone number being given out to anyone else here, they would kill the phone company with all the wrong numbers due to a listing as such.

Nyack Hospital's Code H Spells Safety and Satisfaction | New Jersey Nursing News

Nyack Hospital, Nyack, N.Y., has launched a system where patients and their visitors can trigger levels of rapid response. Impetus for the innovation came after the well-publicized medical error that ended in the death of 18-month-old Josie King at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md., and the resulting focus on patient and family involvement in acute care.

Although patients and families can use the system to alert staff about potential emergency situations, such as chest pain, it also offers the reassurance that help is nearby. This is in case patients experience delays in bedside care, pain medications, and more, according to Ginni Norton, RN, MS, Nursing Performance Improvement, Nyack Hospital, a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.

A team approach

Nyack Hospital patients and their visitors can call 3-1-1-1, which goes directly to hospital operators. The operators have been trained to ask callers questions according to an algorithm. Callers who report something physiological, such as bleeding or chest pain, are be routed immediately to rapid response. The call can trigger a team, including the nurse manager from the patient's unit, house physician, respiratory therapist, critical care nurse, and pharmacist.

Be your special needs child's advocate during air travel | Best Family Travel Advice

In today’s world of poor customer service and inconsistent policies, self-sufficient travel is the best. It may sound harsh, but nobody else outside your friends and family can be safely relied on to help you and your granddaughters. You can ask the airline to place a note in the reservation, but honestly, the advocacy is up to you.

Firstly, bring a letter from the children’s physician stating their medical needs and then request private screening at TSA. Communicate with the TSA agents at each step and ask for a supervisor if needed. Remain calm: they are not going to respect your situation as much as you’d like them to simply because most people don’t really understand. If you can ask a friend or relative to accompany you through airport security to the gate, that may free you up to care for the girls while the friend helps with belongings.

iStock 000000340090XSmall 300x238 Be your special needs childs advocate during air travelYou may want to see if the girls would wear a mask. Hand washing with soap and water is best, but when on airplanes, use instant hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes, wipe down tray tables and arm rests, and communicate your situation with flight attendants. There is a product that covers the seat called Plane Sheets. If using the airplane lavatory, do not wash hands in there, as there are so many germs on faucet, soap dispenser and door handle; instead use hand sanitizer at your seat.

HealthNewsReview.org | Independent Expert Reviews of News Stories | Holding Health and Medical Journalism Accountable

Like the NPR story we also reviewed, this story about revised guidance on diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease does a nice job of clearly distinguishing what is relevant to readers and what is of interest only to researchers.

Our Review Summary

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

This report tells readers the stark reality, that lab tests and brain scans for Alzheimer’s are not ready for clinical use and even when the tests are validated, they will have limited value to patients until effective treatments are developed.

This story includes a comment about how early diagnosis could help patients and families plan for the future; but it would have been nice to see an acknowledgment of the potential psychological and social consequences.

Like the NPR story, this report fails to tell readers about the ties between quoted experts and companies that are developing tests and treatments, even though those ties were disclosed. This story quoted several experts, but none who are independent of the panel that issued the revised diagnosis guidance.

Why This Matters:

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

It is more than just validation of the new diagnostic approaches being described that will be needed before these can influence clinical practice. All of the diagnostic test characteristics will need to be examined, including the ability of the test results to accurately predict which patients are likely to develop AD (the false positive, false negative, positive and negative predictive value, etc). Additionally, the reliability of the measures will need to be determined. From a clinical perspective, until there are treatments that can alter progression, other than helping patients understand what to expect in the future, currently there is not a lot of benefit and there are potential harms for knowing early on if a patient has this condition.

Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation - Home

The Need for Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation

A family never plans on having a member severely injure their spine. While in intensive care, families face the extreme shock of suddenly having to arrange for long-term rehabilitation and around-the-clock care for their loved one. In Las Vegas, these families currently have little or no resources available to guide them through a myriad of crucial decisions that will impact the outcome of their loved one's long-term recovery.

Founder's Story

No one knows this better than Scott Frost, founder of SIRF, father, fiancé, loving son and entrepreneur. On May 10, 2009, Scott was injured in an off-road dirt bike accident that damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed from the neck down. What started as a day of fun in the hills south of Henderson Executive Airport turned into a near-fatal chain of events. [Read Scott's complete story here.]

SIRF's Origin

During the 70 days Scott spent in Las Vegas' Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital, he watched other patients who didn't have the help of friends and family like he had. Many had given up hope for their futures. "It made me furious that this could happen in this day and age." I don't want anyone to have to go through the hopelessness of being so alone and distraught. I was surrounded by loved ones. I can't imagine if I hadn't had that.

Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault: English: Home

"Every day, women, men, and children across America suffer the pain and trauma of sexual assault. From verbal harassment and intimidation to molestation and rape, this crime occurs far too frequently, goes unreported far too often, and leaves long-lasting physical and emotional scars. During National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we recommit ourselves not only to lifting the veil of secrecy and shame surrounding sexual violence, but also to raising awareness, expanding support for victims, and strengthening our response." President Obama's Proclamation on Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA) is a not-for-profit corporation of 33 community-based sexual assault crisis centers working together to end sexual violence. Each center provides 24-hour crisis intervention services, counseling and advocacy for victims of sexual assault and their significant others. Each center presents prevention education
