Presentation Cites Ways to Counteract Low Health Literacy | National Nursing News

Although low health literacy is a significant barrier to quality care, especially among elderly patients, a recent presentation noted how increased use of simple health literacy assessment tests by nurses and clinicians can help improve communication and health outcomes.

Several screening tools are available to assess health literacy but are underutilized, according to a presentation at the 36th Annual Congress of the Oncology Nursing Society by Ellen C. Mullen, RN, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, nurse practitioner in the Lymphoma and Myeloma Center at The University of MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Furthermore, nurses and other health professionals routinely underestimate the prevalence of limited health literacy — the degree to which an individual can obtain, process and understand health information needed to make appropriate health decisions — and overestimate patients’ ability to understand medical information.

Nyack Hospital's Code H Spells Safety and Satisfaction | New Jersey Nursing News

Nyack Hospital, Nyack, N.Y., has launched a system where patients and their visitors can trigger levels of rapid response. Impetus for the innovation came after the well-publicized medical error that ended in the death of 18-month-old Josie King at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md., and the resulting focus on patient and family involvement in acute care.

Although patients and families can use the system to alert staff about potential emergency situations, such as chest pain, it also offers the reassurance that help is nearby. This is in case patients experience delays in bedside care, pain medications, and more, according to Ginni Norton, RN, MS, Nursing Performance Improvement, Nyack Hospital, a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.

A team approach

Nyack Hospital patients and their visitors can call 3-1-1-1, which goes directly to hospital operators. The operators have been trained to ask callers questions according to an algorithm. Callers who report something physiological, such as bleeding or chest pain, are be routed immediately to rapid response. The call can trigger a team, including the nurse manager from the patient's unit, house physician, respiratory therapist, critical care nurse, and pharmacist.

Be your special needs child's advocate during air travel | Best Family Travel Advice

In today’s world of poor customer service and inconsistent policies, self-sufficient travel is the best. It may sound harsh, but nobody else outside your friends and family can be safely relied on to help you and your granddaughters. You can ask the airline to place a note in the reservation, but honestly, the advocacy is up to you.

Firstly, bring a letter from the children’s physician stating their medical needs and then request private screening at TSA. Communicate with the TSA agents at each step and ask for a supervisor if needed. Remain calm: they are not going to respect your situation as much as you’d like them to simply because most people don’t really understand. If you can ask a friend or relative to accompany you through airport security to the gate, that may free you up to care for the girls while the friend helps with belongings.

iStock 000000340090XSmall 300x238 Be your special needs childs advocate during air travelYou may want to see if the girls would wear a mask. Hand washing with soap and water is best, but when on airplanes, use instant hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes, wipe down tray tables and arm rests, and communicate your situation with flight attendants. There is a product that covers the seat called Plane Sheets. If using the airplane lavatory, do not wash hands in there, as there are so many germs on faucet, soap dispenser and door handle; instead use hand sanitizer at your seat.

Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation - Home

The Need for Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation

A family never plans on having a member severely injure their spine. While in intensive care, families face the extreme shock of suddenly having to arrange for long-term rehabilitation and around-the-clock care for their loved one. In Las Vegas, these families currently have little or no resources available to guide them through a myriad of crucial decisions that will impact the outcome of their loved one's long-term recovery.

Founder's Story

No one knows this better than Scott Frost, founder of SIRF, father, fiancé, loving son and entrepreneur. On May 10, 2009, Scott was injured in an off-road dirt bike accident that damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed from the neck down. What started as a day of fun in the hills south of Henderson Executive Airport turned into a near-fatal chain of events. [Read Scott's complete story here.]

SIRF's Origin

During the 70 days Scott spent in Las Vegas' Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital, he watched other patients who didn't have the help of friends and family like he had. Many had given up hope for their futures. "It made me furious that this could happen in this day and age." I don't want anyone to have to go through the hopelessness of being so alone and distraught. I was surrounded by loved ones. I can't imagine if I hadn't had that.

Nursing malpractice, Nursing, Jun 1998 by Wilkinson, Allen P:"What is nursing malpractice? Malpractice is the legal term for negligence by professionals, which generally includes nurses. In some states, however, malpractice is applied only to physicians, lawyers, and accountants; nurses could be sued for professional negligence instead. Although this seems like a fine distinction, it has practical significance because the statute of limitations (the time limit for bringing a legal action) is usually shorter for negligence than for malpractice. For our purposes, I'll use the term malpractice to cover any type of professional negligence."

Representation If Sued, Nursing Legal Issues, Medi-smart.com:"As their professional roles expand, nurses are naturally becoming more vulnerable to the types of lawsuits that have plagued physicians for years. Malpractice is the legal term for negligence by any licensed professional. Case law began recognizing nurses as professionals in the mid-1970s, and has lately come to see registered nurses as "assertive, decisive healthcare providers," according to a 1985 New York appellate court opinion."

Nurses, Negligence, and Malpractice: An analysis based on more than 250 cases against nurses, Nursingcenter.com:"More and more nurses are being named defendants in malpractice lawsuits, according to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). From 1998 to 2001, for instance, the number of malpractice payments made by nurses increased from 253 to 413 (see Figure 1 , page 55). The trend shows no signs of stopping, 1–3 despite efforts by nursing educators to inform nurses and student nurses of their legal and professional responsibilities and limitations. A charge of negligence against a nurse can arise from almost any action or failure to act that results in patient injury—most often, an unintentional failure to adhere to a standard of clinical practice—and may lead to a malpractice lawsuit."
