Listening To Nurses Is Key To Being A Good Doctor, by Doctor Grumpy, MD, KevinMD:"I started out in medicine in the mid-80?s, volunteering at an ER. And the biggest shock to me was learning how much of what happens in a hospital is nurse territory. Doctors will see you anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes a day, depending on how sick you are. And the rest is the nurses. They're the ones making sure you get your pills and checking that your vital signs aren't dropping. They make sure you don't fall down and break something. If you start vomiting, doctors will run out of the room and the nurses will rush in. They change your wound dressings and start your IV line. They'll bring you a warm blanket. And clean disgusting things off you. Even if you're drunk. Or delirious. Or mean. And through all of this they try be friendly and positive. Even though you aren't their only sick patient."

Do you recommend that nurses join professional organizations? Renee Thompson, MSN, RN, CMSRN @RTConnections:
Absolutely! If a nurse is involved in a professional organization, it sends a message that he/she is serious about their role as a nurse.
Renee Thompson, MSN, RN, CMSRN @RTConnections, Conference Keynote Speaker, Bullying Expert, Nursing Consultant, Nurse Educator:"At RTConnections, I educate, connect and inspire current and future nurses. I started this company because I really believe that patients deserve to be cared for by competent, compassionate nurses and that nurses deserve to believe they make a difference. To make that happen I offer keynote presentations that help nurses take ownership of their practice; seminars and workshops to improve clinical and professional practice; and consulting to help organizations create nurturing and supportive work environments for employees and the patients they serve. My area of expertise is in professional development, nurse-to-nurse bullying, communication/collaboration, team building and academic service partnerships."

Renee Thompson What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? I've always been fascinated by science. The fact that the pH of your blood is 7.35 - 7.45 is absolutely amazing to me! I also wanted to have a career where every day I had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people. Being a nurse meet both interests.

Older Patients Discharged From the Hospital: 10 tips to prevent readmission. Martine Ehrenclou, @med_writer:"There’s a 1 in 5 chance that an older patient who has had a common surgery will end up in the emergency room within 30 days of their hospital stay, according to a new study in Health Affairs.
Transitions from hospitals to the outpatient setting can be dangerous for many older adults. As patients are still recovering when they are discharged from the hospital, they might not understand or remember instructions about caring for themselves at home. Often, older patients don’t see their primary care doctors for follow up care and don’t take their medications properly.
You can help."

Elizabeth
Scala, MSN/MBA, RN: Your most pressing concerns with the profession and
healthcare: "Nurses need to start putting themselves first. The only
way any shifts will come within our profession and the healthcare system
overall is when nursing is a healthier role-model. Nurses must love,
value, and respect themselves. Once they really, truly do that-they will
allow themselves to take the time it takes to be well. I hear nurses
saying "I don't have time for my health. I don't have time for me…"
Well, yes. When we put everyone else above us- patients, clients,
families, friends, neighbors, communities,
etc. - yes we don't have
time for ourselves. But when we love ourselves more we find and make
time for us. Then and only then will we welcome health and well-being
into our busy lives. When we are healthy- our patients can enjoy
healthier lives. Healthier patients- healthier nation. It is all very
related, but we've got to start putting our own health and well-being
needs first!"

+Elizabeth Scala MSN/MBA, RN: What made you decide to start your own business?
What made you decide to start your own business? I always knew I wanted
to own my own "something" I just never knew what that something was. So
I went to school for my master's in business and nursing- just in case
that idea came to me! When I left my inpatient role to work at a
wellness center, coordinating a physician referred exercise program, I
went through a health and wellness coaching program- my first one of
two.
When I was done the club wanted me to coach their clients
there. But I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do- I wanted to
coach my own clients in my own business. That "something" had turned
into a reality. I am quite independent, motivated, hard-working,
committed, and dedicated. I want to make a difference and have an impact
on the nursing profession. I want to help our profession rise to a new
level. That being said my "coaching" business has turned into so much
more.
I realized that nurses needed me in many different
capacities. So I have turned to speaking, writing, radio show hosting,
and many other modalities to be able to help nurses where they are at. I
love being a business owner and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN: +Elizabeth Scala What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?
"How I actually got into nursing is a funny story that my mom likes to
remind me of all of the time. My senior year of college I was moving
into an apartment with two nursing majors. One of them even had a nurse
professor at our school for a mother! So needless to say as we were
unpacking our stuff and I was standing there telling them I “didn’t know
what I wanted to do when I grew up” they all put their heads together,
the four of them (my two roommates to be, my mother, and her mother the
nursing professor) and decided I apply to the accelerated nursing
program at my college. So for me, it wasn’t so much a “choice” but I am
grateful I listened to their guidance every day of my life"
