Age Discrimination Takes Its Toll by Paula Span, January 12, 2012, 12:07 pm:"Raise
your hand if you’ve felt that people treat you with less respect or
courtesy than others, that they act as if you’re not smart, that you get
poorer service in stores and restaurants than others — in short, if
you’ve felt discriminated against because of age, gender, ethnicity,
income, disability, appearance, even marital status.
A startling proportion of older people report that they’ve experienced
discrimination: 63 percent, in a study recently published in Research on
Aging. The most commonly cited cause? “Thirty percent report being
mistreated because of their age,” said the lead author Ye Luo, a Clemson
University sociologist. Perceived discrimination because of gender,
race or ancestry, disabilities or appearance followed in smaller
proportion"

What Made You Decide To Start Your Own Business? @HealthyNal @AutoimmuneRN #Nurseup #Nursefriendly
http://www.nursingentrepreneurs.com/why/
New:
What made you decide to start your own business?
The more I work with patients and families, the more value I see in my
knowledge as a nurse. Health impacts all aspects on an individual's
life, as well as those around them. Starting Healthy Now and Later is a
way for me to reach beyond the bedside and share this knowledge to
improve the health, wellbeing, and life of another.

What made you decide to start your own business?
Autonomy to help others in a non clinical setting in an effort to
hopefully empower them in such a way that they might be able to avoid
hospitalization or chronic health
Issues. I have been an entreprenuer all of my life and my nursing
degree and license allow me to practice in the capacity I have always
wanted to: to help others holistically to reach their lifestyle and
wellness goals. In addition, I am a relationship type of person and
appreciate long term interactions/communication with clients.
Shannon Garrett, BS, RN, CHLC, Shannon Garrett Wellness, @AutoimmuneRN, Tennessee Nurse Entrepreneurs, Health Coaches:"I
provide holistic health, wellness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching
for women who struggle with the many complexities of living with
autoimmune or other chronic health issues. I have a 12 week program I
work them through to help them reach their goals and I provide a NANDA
wellness care plan for them. I personally have three autoimmune issues
and know what these women go through. Medication nor diet are
stand-alone treatments. Lifestyle issues are an integral part of
healing and I help them work through challenges."

What made you decide to start your own business? I always knew I wanted
to own my own "something" I just never knew what that something was. So I
went to school for my master's in business and nursing- just in case
that idea came to me! When I left my inpatient role to work at a
wellness center, coordinating a physician referred exercise program, I
went through a health and wellness coaching program- my first one of
two. When I was done the club wanted me to coach their clients there.
But I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do- I wanted to coach my
own clients in my own business. That "something" had turned into a
reality. I am quite independent, motivated, hard-working, committed, and
dedicated. I want to make a difference and have an impact on the
nursing profession. I want to help our profession rise to a new level.
That being said my "coaching" business has turned into so much more- I
realized that nurses needed me in many different capacities. So I have
turned to speaking, writing, radio show hosting, and many other
modalities to be able to help nurses where they are at. I love being a
business owner and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Reiki Master, Living Sublime Wellness:"Elizabeth
"Nurse Coach" Scala, MSN/MBA, RN is passionate about helping healthcare
professionals, nurses in particular, to embody holistic living and

busy nurses.
Elizabeth offers group coaching programs, one-on-one coaching, and is

to a specific population or purpose, the sky is the limit.

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially
qualified to operate a business?
Nurses all possess great organizational skills, documentation skills, as
well as leadership and delegation skills. Such skills position nurses
for business ownership. Nurses also are trusted by the general
population, have mastered public relations, and treat the public with
respect. Again, all qualities for a business to become successful!
Maureen Sullivan RN, BSN, CEN, CDE, Florida Nursing Entrepreneurs:"Registered
Nurse x 30 years, with a focus on ER/Trauma. I have worked in a variety
of roles, including ER Manager, Stroke Program Manager, Trauma
Coordinator, and Director of Education. I just published my first book
(!) on my nursing career ("Never Again"). It is a compilation of
stories of patients I've cared for during my career. All true stories!"

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?
What attracted me to nursing was the fact that in order to be truly good
at the job itself, you have to connect with others. This includes
discovering their definition of wellness, of pain, of comfort, and of
suffering. It's an honor to peek into someone's life and meeting him or
her where they are vulnerable in order to build them up through
education, prayer, or simply listening.
