My neighbor depends more on me for care than on her own family.

My neighbor and I are both widows and have enjoyed several years of going out to dinner, sharing errands, and even taking a few weekend trips. Last fall she got lung cancer, which has spread. Since her daughter lives two hours away, I took it on myself to check on her daily, provide some meals, and even take her to chemotherapy and other appointments. I was glad to do this -- that's what friends and neighbors should do.

But it's now become a full-time job, and I have my own health concerns. My neighbor is starting to treat me differently, expecting that I take her places and getting upset if I have other plans. I've hinted to the daughter that I can't take on this much care. But now I feel stuck -- and guilty for not doing more.

How do I get her daughter to provide the care that family should give, so that I can go back to being a good neighbor and friend?

Praying for Others Seems to Help Anger Fade | Caring.com

Saying a prayer for another person may help people control their negative emotions after being insulted by a stranger, researchers report.
A series of studies found that after people were intentionally provoked into anger, asking them to pray for a person who needs extra help or support (a cancer patient, for example), helped calm them down.
The researchers also suggested that the method seemed to be effective even in people who weren't particularly religious or regular churchgoers. Nor did religious affiliation make a difference in the ability of prayer to calm people, although nearly all participants identified themselves as Christian, according to the report published online March 18 in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

To The Brain The Pain Of Rejection Really Hurts : NPR

The pain of rejection is more than just a figure of speech.

The regions of the brain that respond to physical pain overlap with those that react to social rejection, according to a new study that used brain imaging on people involved in romantic breakups.

"These results give new meaning to the idea that rejection `hurts,'" wrote psychology professor Ethan Kross of the University of Michigan and his colleagues. Their findings are reported in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Co-author Edward Smith of Columbia University explained that the research shows that psychological or social events can affect regions of the brain that scientists thought were dedicated to physical pain.

In a way, we're saying "it's not a metaphor," Smith said in a telephone interview.

Organizing family and friends for caregiving
From holding family planning meetings to running your own blog or website, you can do a variety of things to enlist the support of friends and family -- and keep them informed -- when you're a primary caregiver.
Yet it's not easy managing people, and this is essentially what you're being called on to do -- on top of managing someone's care. Volunteer helpers need coordination and follow-up, as well as updates on how the person in your care is doing. So how can you keep this blessing from becoming a burden? Here are some suggestions that have worked for other families and friends of patients.
Hold a meeting
A good starting place for organizing care is with the person's family, his close friends, or both. Consult with the person you're caring for about the idea as much as possible, including whom to invite. The goal is to gather those close to him together to review the person's situation and needs, listen to his wishes, and hash out a care plan. (Sometimes the best support group isn't made up of relatives but of friends or a mix of family, friends, and service providers.) It helps to have an agenda and someone in charge. What you're after is a rough outline of who can do what, when, and for how long. This will give you a sense of other resources you'll need to tap, including other friends or paid help such as a visiting nurse, personal care attendant, money management service, or geriatric care manager.

SparkNotes: Digestion: Function

The process of digestion begins in the mouth. Within the mouth lie the teeth, tongue and jaws. Through a chewing motion, the food is mechanically broken down between the teeth and mixed with saliva, which aids in chemical digestion. Upon stimulation, saliva is produced in the salivary glands and brought into the mouth. It contains salivary amylase, an enzyme that digests starch. Once the digestion in the mouth is completed, the first phase of swallowing is initiated. This stage is voluntary and is characterized by contraction of the muscles of the floor of the mouth and tongue that propel the food bolus into the pharynx.

Once again, a local problem is becoming a global crisis. Just as California was the epicenter of the subprime mortgage crisis that shook the world, so too the nuclear waste leaks at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in the wake of the earthquake are posing a threat to others far beyond Japan’s borders.

And just as the international community had to come together to stem the financial meltdown from contaminating the entire world economy, it must now intervene in Japan to prevent radiation from poisoning the planet.
The situation is serious. If the spent fuel pools storing irradiated fuels from the reactors in Fukushima give way as a result of a new aftershock or by overheating, huge quantities of radioactive material – either as a liquid or gas flowing into the sea, air, or subsoil – will be released. In the case of the containment vessel of the third reactor, considerable quantities of plutonium might escape. In this event, parts of Japan will become largely uninhabitable, and radiation will spread out across the globe through the food chain or carried by the wind and sea currents.
Japan's missteps and coverup
Like the American financial institutions that spawned the subprime mortgage crisis, Japan’s nuclear crisis is largely the result of forsaking prudence for profits. Knowing better, the Fukushima plant was nonetheless built on an earthquake fault on the seacoast vulnerable to tsunamis. Worse, six plants were bundled together like toxic mortgages, inviting disastrous contagion, sidestepping safety regulations.

63 Year Survival Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki Help Assess Current Long Term Radiation Effects In Japan

In order to understand what the long-term radiation-related effects might potentially be for residents in Japan today after the current nuclear accident, researchers report in Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness that a study of the long-term health of the atomic explosions of Nagasaki and Hiroshima could provide some insight.
The review article in this American Medical Association (AMA) journal examines risk estimates and explains what we have learned from the survivors 63 years later. The AMA informs that this article is open access.
The authors note:
"Approximately 40% of the A-bomb survivors, but about 80% of those exposed before age 20 years, are alive today."
