“Blood &Tears”–my jacket from Regina Holliday @ReginaHolliday, @Med_writer #patient #healthcare #nurseup

“Blood &Tears”–my jacket from Regina Holliday @ReginaHolliday, @Med_writer #patient #healthcare #nurseup:"Weeks before attending the MedicineX conference as an e-patient scholar at Stanford University in September of 2012, I sent Regina Holliday a suit jacket with a request for her to paint my story. I was ready to become a member of her Walking Gallery . Along with the jacket, I included my new book, The Take-Charge Patient, and a personal note, which mentioned that my story of severe chronic pain was in chapter one of my book.

When I first opened the box that arrived in the mail one weekday afternoon, I withdrew my black jacket with its new visual story painted on the back. The tears came. Maybe tears that harked back to a year and a half of searing lower abdominal pain that kept me from sitting at my desk, from riding in a car, from being the kind of mom I like to be for our daughter, from leading a normal life."

Older Patients Discharged From the Hospital: 10 tips to prevent readmission. Martine Ehrenclou, @med_writer

Older Patients Discharged From the Hospital: 10 tips to prevent readmission. Martine Ehrenclou, @med_writer:"There’s a 1 in 5 chance that an older patient who has had a common surgery will end up in the emergency room within 30 days of their hospital stay, according to a new study in Health Affairs.

Transitions from hospitals to the outpatient setting can be dangerous for many older adults. As patients are still recovering when they are discharged from the hospital, they might not understand or remember instructions about caring for themselves at home. Often, older patients don’t see their primary care doctors for follow up care and don’t take their medications properly.

You can help."

How Health Care Reform Affects You, Martine Ehrenclou, @Med_Writer, #nurseup, #AffordableCareAct, #Obamacare

How Health Care Reform Affects You, Martine Ehrenclou, @Med_Writer:"With some new and rather major changes coming your way with Health Care Reform, it’s a good idea to review some basics about how they will affect you. Some changes are already in place and other major changes will occur starting January 1, 2014.

Roll up your sleeves and dive in.

What Affects You Now

1. Children cannot be denied health insurance because of pre-existing conditions.

2. Young adults up to the age of 26 can stay on their parents’ health insurance plans.

3. Health insurers can no longer cancel your policy if you get sick."
