George Mason University / College of Nursing (BSN, MSN, PhD):"Our nursing programs are filling a much needed gap in the nursing workforce. Undergraduate program options include traditional BSN educational opportunities, an accelerated program of study for second degree students, and our popular RN to BSN program. Because nursing educators and advanced practice nurses are also part of the current and future nursing shortage, admissions to our nursing Master's degree and PhD programs are bustling. Gender and age bias in triage decisions., Arslanian-Engoren C., Pubmed:"Recently it has been recognized that women are less likely than men to be diagnosed with a myocardial infarction (MI) or to receive early or aggressive treatment and are more likely than men to die of an MI. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the triage decisions made by ED nurses for persons with symptoms suggestive of MI. The theoretical framework for this investigation was Hammond's lens model for clinical inference and Evan's two-stage reasoning model. METHOD: Four focus group sessions were conducted."

Gender And Racial Discrimination In Pay And Promotion For Nhs Nurses, IDEAS at UConn Economics:"For many years the NHS has been subject to allegations that gender and racial discrimination are a feature of the internal labour market for qualified nurses. This paper examines this issue with regard to the promotion process using 1994 survey data. We start by rejecting the assumption of covariate exogeneity inherent in the ordered probit model. A full simultaneous model is then developed which has important consequences for estimates of the influence of gender, ethnicity, training and career interruptions. We find evidence of significant differences in speed of promotion between gender and ethnic groups, which imply large differences in career earnings."

Gender Bias, Education, 212.net:"Our children are receiving messages from the educational system that only serve to reinforce stereotypical gender roles for males and females. The fact is that males receive more attention from teachers in the classroom than girls do. Boys are called on in class more than girls, and class discussion is often dominated by the same three or four students, usually boys. Gender bias is especially evident in science and math classes, beginning mainly at the middle school level. In many cases, the teachers are not even aware of these biases in the classroom."

Gender bias in nursing care? Gender-related differences in patient satisfaction with the quality of nursing care, Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences:"Gender-related differences in experience with nursing care, was studied using data from a Norwegian survey of patient-satisfaction. The survey included 1469 male and 1226 female patients. Results showed that young female patients were less content with all aspects of nursing care when compared with young male patients."

Amber Keinath, Registered Nurse and Health Coach:"Amber is a Registered Nurse and Health Coach who is very passionate about educating and inspiring women to be healthy for life. She started her nursing career working in the medical, postpartum & newborn, and pediatric specialties in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Amber continued her education by completing her Master's Degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Wellness Promotion and becoming certified as a Health Coach. From Hospital Nurse to Health Coach: During Amber's nursing career, she began to question her ability to help people in the hospital. She witnessed many people get discharged from the hospital with more medications only to wind up readmitted a few days later. People were not getting healthier despite all the care provided. She felt there was a better way to help these people."

Virginia Commonwealth University / School of Nursing (BSN, MSN, PhD):"The School has prepared graduates for initial licensure since it inception in 1893. In the 1950's the entry level program became a baccalaureate degree. In the late 1980's an innovative program providing educational access for RN's returning for baccalaureate education was begun. In the early 1970's a certificate nurse practitioner program was begun and in the mid 1970's the first master's program in nursing was established here at VCU. In the early 1980's the NP certificate program was redeveloped within the masters framework. In the 1990's a revision of the masters curriculum placed us on the cutting edge of the new concept in advanced practice nursing. Post master's certificate program for advanced practice were added for master prepared nurses to prepare for new areas of clinical responsibilities. In the late 1980's a doctoral program in nursing was established."

Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners (VCNP):"The Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners (VCNP), the statewide professional organization for all nurse practitioners (NPs) licensed in Virginia, and is a council of of the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA) Commission on Professional Practice. The organization of NPs in Virginia began a quarter century ago in the regional or local areas of the state. With the growth in the number of NPs throughout the state, Virginia NPs initially organized to become a Professional Practice Group of the VNA. In 1984, the VCNP became a council of the VNA, and as such has continued to grow in membership and in the services provided to its members. Membership now is over 1,300. Although there are other specialty NP groups, the VCNP offers an advantage for all NPs in Virginia because of its association with the VNA and the American Nurses Association (ANA) with their broad based membership and the resources available through these relationships.

Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation:"The Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) agency that is dedicated to improving the lives of men, women, and children who live with this often devastating disease. The organization's goals are to increase awareness of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) - to - improve treatments, and, through research - to - find a cure. The Foundation was formed in 1990, when a few individuals came together around a kitchen table to encourage each other through their struggles with a disease that they finally had a name for - restless legs syndrome. Their common goal was to help others cope with RLS and to build awareness for unknowing thousands who were searching for help with the "creepy-crawly sensations in their legs". The legal nonprofit organization - RLS Foundation - was formed incorporated in 1992."

Retained Objects in the OR:"I am a nursing student, I am doing an assignment on ethical dilemmas. If you were a nurse and you saw that a surgeon did not account for a suture after a patient had an operation, would you report this incident to the supervisor? one suture is still inside the patient, and the surgeon does not want the patient to know about this."

Reverse discrimination in nursing leadership: hitting the concrete ceiling. Porter-O'Grady T., Nurs Adm Q. 1995 Winter;19(2):56-62.:"Discrimination has many facets. In nursing there is as much discrimination as there is in any other group. Reverse discrimination, that is discrimination toward men in nursing, is evident even though it is well hidden. There are many situations and opportunities for the minority group in nursing (men) to experience the vagaries of gender prejudice in the same concentration as women experience in their attempt to integrate in more male-dominated professions. It is valuable to take time to denote the characteristics of gender bias in nursing and to identify mechanisms for handling it."
