Technology, students with disabilities: Technology fair showcases new tech gadgets for students with disabilities - dailypress.com

Adam Amick has a Bluetooth-enabled microphone to help with his hearing loss and an iPad that can store many of his heavy textbooks so he doesn't have to carry them around.

"It levels the playing field," Amick said of technology. "It allows people with disabilities to adapt to their environment and be treated like everybody else."

Amick, a Chesapeake resident, is a 19-year-old sophomore at Virginia Wesleyan College who has cerebral palsy. On Tuesday, he attended an adaptive technology fair at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott as part of the Virginia Transition Forum.

The forum, put on by the state rehabilitation services and education departments, is designed to help students with disabilities prepare for life beyond high school. More than 1,000 people across the state registered for the event.

Brain’s Learning Ability Seems to Recharge During Light Slumber - Health News - Health.com

Your brain’s ability to learn may get recharged during the light, dreamless slumber that accounts for up to half of your night’s sleep, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley conducted tests on 44 healthy young adults and found strong evidence that bursts of brain waves called sleep spindles may network between important regions of the brain to clear a path to learning.

These spindles — which are fast pulses of electricity that are generated during non-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and can occur up to 1,000 times per night — help to transfer fact-based memories from the brain’s hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex’s “hard drive.”

This enables the hippocampus, which has limited storage space, to take in fresh data, the researchers explained.

ADHD Linked to Greater Creative Achievement, NursingCenter

Adults with ADHD may be better at generating ideas and have more verbal originality

MONDAY, March 28 (HealthDay News) -- Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) attain more real-world creative achievement and have different creative styles compared to non-ADHD individuals, according to a study published in the April issue of Personality and Individual Differences.

Holly A. White, Ph.D., of the University of Memphis, and Priti Shah, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, investigated real-world creative achievement and laboratory measures of creative thinking among 30 adults with ADHD and 30 controls. The participants were tested using the Conners' adult ADHD rating scale, the Creative Achievement Questionnaire, the FourSight Thinking Profile, and the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA).

The researchers found that adults with ADHD had higher levels of real-world creative achievement, displayed higher levels of original creative thinking on the verbal task of the ATTA, and displayed improved real-world creative achievement compared to those without ADHD. In the FourSight Thinking Profile comparison of creative styles, those with ADHD showed an inclination toward idea generation; whereas, those without ADHD were stronger in problem clarification and idea development.

Website offers top tips on caring for people with learning disabilities | News | Nursing Times

A new website, offering practical tips on supporting people with learning disabilities, is proving popular with healthcare providers for its hands-on approach.

www.Netbuddy.org.uk provides solutions to issues many learning disability nurses will recognise, such as: how to administer medicines comfortably, how to manage constipation, how to communicate with someone who is non-verbal and how to cope with challenging behaviour.

All the tips are contributed by people with first-hand experience of learning disability.

Netbuddy co-founder Deborah Gundle said: “Netbuddy appeals to healthcare professionals because the advice is very practical, and it comes directly from people with everyday experience of learning disability. It’s a goldmine of useful information from people who really know what they’re talking about.

Since www.Netbuddy.org.uk launched in September 2010, the site has had thousands of hits from parents, carers and healthcare providers - either picking up ideas or contributing tips.

“Parents immediately recognised how useful Netbuddy could be and started using it straight away,” said Deborah. “Now we are getting more healthcare professionals to the site, which is fantastic. We particularly want to hear from learning disability nurses, as they will have lots of useful ideas to pass on.

“We really believe that Netbuddy can make a huge difference in providing excellent quality of care for people with learning disabilities.”

Parents, caregivers of special needs children will find this article of interest.

What Causes ADHD? 12 Myths and Facts - Health.com

Because attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms—inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity—affect a child's ability to learn and get along with others, some people think an ADHD child's behavior is caused by a lack of discipline, a chaotic family life, or even too much TV.

In fact, research suggests that ADHD is largely a genetic disorder.

However, some environmental factors may play a role as well. Here, we separate fact from fiction about the causes of ADHD.
