How Much Sleep Do Children Need? - NYTimes.com

I have an important question — actually, several related questions — for all parents of school-age children: Do you know how much your children sleep? Do you know how much sleep they really need?

And do you know what their biological clocks are telling them about when to go to sleep and when to wake up?

Although young children are likely to arouse their groggy parents every morning, with no respect for weekends, after puberty the tables turn. Often I hear a familiar lament from parents of adolescents: Every day it’s a struggle to get the kids up and out to school on time.

Brain’s Learning Ability Seems to Recharge During Light Slumber - Health News - Health.com

Your brain’s ability to learn may get recharged during the light, dreamless slumber that accounts for up to half of your night’s sleep, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley conducted tests on 44 healthy young adults and found strong evidence that bursts of brain waves called sleep spindles may network between important regions of the brain to clear a path to learning.

These spindles — which are fast pulses of electricity that are generated during non-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and can occur up to 1,000 times per night — help to transfer fact-based memories from the brain’s hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex’s “hard drive.”

This enables the hippocampus, which has limited storage space, to take in fresh data, the researchers explained.

Normal sleep a 'privilege' for night workers - CNN.com

Gregory Jones begins his day when his family and the rest of the world winds down and gets ready for bed.

The New Jersey truck driver reports to work at 8 p.m. He loads, stacks and transports vegetables and fruits until 4 a.m.

"I don't get eight hours," Jones said about his workday sleeping habits. "Sleep for me is a privilege. It's a blessing if I can get it."

Night workers like Jones are at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions. With biology beckoning their bodies to sleep during the night, shift workers say they struggle to stay awake no matter how many years they've done it.

When sleep prevails, there can be major consequences for others as well.

On Wednesday, two airplanes landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport shortly after midnight without an air traffic controller.

When you can't sleep, you know it. But what about when you can, yet you wake up feeling tired and achy or you're groggy again a few hours later? What's that about? All too often, it turns out, the problem is one that doesn't keep you awake but does sabotage your sleep in more subtle ways, so the hours you spend in bed don't refresh and revitalize you the way they should. Here are seven signs that you have a sleep problem that's secretly stealing your rest.

1. You sleep poorly and wake with a bad taste in your mouth.

What it's a symptom of: "Morning mouth" can be a signal of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or asymptomatic heartburn. Recent sleep studies have shown that up to 25 percent of people who report sleeping poorly without a diagnosed cause have sleep-related acid reflux. But because they don't have obvious heartburn symptoms, they're unaware of the condition.

How it interrupts sleep: Acid reflux causes the body to partially awaken from sleep, even when there are no symptoms of heartburn. The result of this "silent reflux" is fitful, uneven sleep, but when you wake up digestion is complete and you can't tell why you slept poorly.
