When you can't sleep, you know it. But what about when you can, yet you wake up feeling tired and achy or you're groggy again a few hours later? What's that about? All too often, it turns out, the problem is one that doesn't keep you awake but does sabotage your sleep in more subtle ways, so the hours you spend in bed don't refresh and revitalize you the way they should. Here are seven signs that you have a sleep problem that's secretly stealing your rest.

1. You sleep poorly and wake with a bad taste in your mouth.

What it's a symptom of: "Morning mouth" can be a signal of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or asymptomatic heartburn. Recent sleep studies have shown that up to 25 percent of people who report sleeping poorly without a diagnosed cause have sleep-related acid reflux. But because they don't have obvious heartburn symptoms, they're unaware of the condition.

How it interrupts sleep: Acid reflux causes the body to partially awaken from sleep, even when there are no symptoms of heartburn. The result of this "silent reflux" is fitful, uneven sleep, but when you wake up digestion is complete and you can't tell why you slept poorly.

Sleep deprivation 'can cause strokes' | News | Nursing Times

Stroke or heart disease susceptibility is dependant on how much you sleep you get, a new study has suggested.

A Warwick Medical School study has discovered that prolonged sleep deprivation can have a seriously adverse effect on cardiac health.

The research team linked a lack of sleep to strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular disorders which can often cause early death.

Professor Cappuccio and co-author Dr Michelle Miller examined evidence from more than 470,000 participants across eight countries, including Japan, the US, Sweden and the UK.

Professor Francesco Cappuccio said: “If you sleep less than six hours per night and have disturbed sleep you stand a 48% greater chance of developing or dying from heart disease and a 15% greater chance of developing or dying from a stroke.

“The trend for late nights and early mornings is actually a ticking time bomb for our health so you need to act now to reduce your risk of developing these life-threatening conditions.”

Dr Miller added chronic short sleep produces hormones and chemicals in the body, which increases the risk of developing heart disease and strokes, plus other conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.

Beauty and Sleep Deprivation: The Science Behind Beauty Rest - ABC News

Swedish researchers say there's an important link between sleep and your physical appearance. In a study published today in the British Medical Journal, researcher John Axelsson and his team at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that sleep-deprived individuals appear less healthy, more tired, and less attractive than those who have received a full night's worth of sleep.

"Sleep is the body's natural beauty treatment," Axelsson said. "It's probably more effective than any other treatment you could buy."

Subjects Photographed Before and After Sleep Deprivation

In the study, 23 healthy adults from ages 18 to 31 were first photographed after eight hours of sleep, wearing no makeup. The same adults were photographed again after sleeping only five hours and being kept awake for a full 31 hours, with the same lighting and camera settings.
