Feeling stressed

What is stress? top

Stressed out athleteStress is what you feel when you react to pressure from others or from yourself. Pressure can come from anywhere, including school, work, activities, friends, and family members. Ford looks to introduce health, wellness apps to its cars | Healthcare IT News

Cars are already being programmed to parallel park, sense slippery road conditions and alert drivers to impending collisions. Soon they’ll be helping diabetics monitor their blood glucose levels, detect unhealthy air conditions and offer wellness advice.

That’s the plan from the Ford Motor Company, which is working with healthcare companies WellDoc, Medtronic and SDI Health to include health and wellness in-car connectivity solutions on the Ford SYNC platform. The platform makes use of AppLink to allow drivers to access smartphone apps by voice control.

With studies showing that Americans spend more than 500 million “commuter hours” per week in their automobiles, the concept of providing access to information while they’re driving or stuck in traffic is certainly attractive.

National Women's Health Week is a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health. It brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups in an effort to promote women's health. The theme for 2011 is "It's Your Time." National Women's Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. It also encourages them to take steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases. Those steps include:

  • Getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both, each week

7 Things Your Doctor Might Not Explain You

Visiting a doctor periodically for a check-up and getting tested alone does not prevent you from illnesses or risks. You have to get your medical examiner to be open and honest with you about the risks that you are facing if you do not commit to the said lifestyle changes, if there is a need for doing so.

7 Things Your Doctor Might Not Explain You

1. The Facts Behind 'Quit Smoking'

Any doctor is not going to be an alarmist and so the general advice would be to 'Quit smoking'. What he might not be telling you are the facts and the benefits behind quitting smoking. For instance, research has established that even a man who has been smoking for more than 20 years can reduce his risk of suffering a stroke hardly a year after quitting smoking. After a full year, your risk of suffering a heart attack will be equal to that of a non-smoker. It is up to you to decide if your health and your family’s happiness are as important to you as the 2.5 inches of nicotine rush or not.

2. The Truth Behind 'Exercise and Workout'

Typically whether you weigh the right amount for your age and height or not, your doctor is prone to advise you to 'Exercise and Work out'. If you are fit and exercise regularly, he is likely to ask you to keep it up. On the other hand, if you are overweight and do not exercise, he is going to insist that you start on an exercise regime immediately and keep pushing yourself just a little bit harder outside your comfort zone for best results. But what he might not tell you is that just three strenuous workouts a week are enough for you to show significant results in your overall health. But remember, not to exert yourself too much as it will have an adverse effect on your health.

The surprising health benefits of getting outside - Yahoo! News

The next time someone tells you to “go take a hike,” don’t get offended. They may simply be expressing their concern for your well-being.

A study out of the University of Rochester suggests an outdoor romp in a natural setting — even for 10 minutes — can significantly improve your mood, increase your energy levels and make you a nicer person.

“Data shows that even 10 minutes outside will increase your feelings of wellness and vitality as long as you’re paying attention to nature,” says Dr. Richard Ryan, one the study’s authors. “People feel they’re more autonomous and integrated when they’re outside, more in touch with themselves, [so their increased niceness] is partly a reflection on that.”

Ryan, whose research focuses on personality development and well-being, started exploring the relationship between nature and mood when participants in his clinical trials reported higher levels of energy and vitality after spending time outside.

Keep Pets Out of Your Bed? - Dr. Weil

Q
Keep Pets Out of Your Bed?

What's this I hear that allowing pets to sleep on your bed puts you at risk for some dangerous diseases? I've always let my cats sleep on the bed. Is this for real?

A
Answer (Published 4/21/2011)

A team of veterinary researchers in California recently warned against allowing pets to sleep with their owners, citing studies showing that this practice can favor the transmission of a number of diseases. Their search of medical literature turned up cases of meningitis, staphylococcus infections, bubonic plague, Chagas disease (caused by a parasite and spread to animals and humans from infected bugs) and cat-scratch disease that were passed from animals to humans via licking, kissing or sleeping in the same bed. But they conceded that cases of serious infections passed from animals to humans in this way are rare.

Yoga May Also Calm a Dangerous Irregular Heartbeat - US News and World Report

In a small preliminary study, the ancient art of yoga appeared to halve the number of episodes of a potentially dangerous irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation.

Click here to find out more!

Three sessions of yoga a week also improved quality of life, lowering levels of the anxiety and depression which often plagues patients with this condition, according to research to be presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in New Orleans.

"These are exciting results," said Dr. Raul Mitrani, director of the cardiac rhythm device clinic at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Although it didn't cure atrial fibrillation, he added, it did seem to cut the number of "a-fib" episodes.

To The Brain The Pain Of Rejection Really Hurts : NPR

The pain of rejection is more than just a figure of speech.

The regions of the brain that respond to physical pain overlap with those that react to social rejection, according to a new study that used brain imaging on people involved in romantic breakups.

"These results give new meaning to the idea that rejection `hurts,'" wrote psychology professor Ethan Kross of the University of Michigan and his colleagues. Their findings are reported in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Co-author Edward Smith of Columbia University explained that the research shows that psychological or social events can affect regions of the brain that scientists thought were dedicated to physical pain.

In a way, we're saying "it's not a metaphor," Smith said in a telephone interview.

15 Reasons She Has Sex with You: Men's Health.com

reasons_483x300.jpg

Remember when you first discovered sex? In your 6-year-old mind, your parents had done the dirty twice—once to conceive you, and a second time to crank out your little sister. Then, around the 6th grade, you realized that propagation is only a small part of sex. In fact, it’s just one of 237 reasons humans hook up, according to a recent University of Texas study. Although you don’t need a white coat to explain why you love sex, her motivations for sealing the deal often seem rather . . . mysterious. Fortunately for you, the researchers surveyed hundreds of women to pull back the sheet on sex. Here are the top 15 reasons she sleeps with you, and how to, ahem, encourage her along.

7 Surprising Reasons You Wake Up Tired| Sleep Problems | Caring.com

Last updated: March 23, 2011
iStock_000002363691Large

When you can't sleep, you know it. But what about when you can, yet you wake up feeling tired and achy or you're groggy again a few hours later? What's that about? All too often, it turns out, the problem is one that doesn't keep you awake but does sabotage your sleep in more subtle ways, so the hours you spend in bed don't refresh and revitalize you the way they should. Here are seven signs that you have a sleep problem that's secretly stealing your rest.

1. You sleep poorly and wake with a bad taste in your mouth.

What it's a symptom of: "Morning mouth" can be a signal of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or asymptomatic heartburn. Recent sleep studies have shown that up to 25 percent of people who report sleeping poorly without a diagnosed cause have sleep-related acid reflux. But because they don't have obvious heartburn symptoms, they're unaware of the condition.

How it interrupts sleep: Acid reflux causes the body to partially awaken from sleep, even when there are no symptoms of heartburn. The result of this "silent reflux" is fitful, uneven sleep, but when you wake up digestion is complete and you can't tell why you slept poorly.

What to do:

Low levels of psychological distress are linked to long-term disability, study finds - latimes.com

Even a little psychological distress adds up over time, according to a new study published online Wednesday in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

British and Swedish researchers looked at a 2002 survey of more than 17,000 Swedes in Stockholm County, and asked them a series of questions to rate their levels of psychological distress on a scale of zero to 12. Zero means no distress, 1-2 is mild, 3-7 is moderate and 8-12 is severe.

They then checked to see how many of these people had enrolled for disability pension awards in 2007. They found that the higher the level of psychological stress, the higher the likelihood that people would need a disability pension award five years down the line.

Sexual Healing for Cold & Flu Prevention | Energetic Health

Calling Dr. Love: Welcome to the first in our series on sex. It seems sex is integral to our health! Stay tuned...

Research has shown that frequent sexual activity — having an orgasm at least twice a week — can keep you from getting sick this winter. Individuals who engage in regular sexual activity have been shown to produce higher levels of immunoglobulin (IGA), an anti-body that can prevent susceptibility to catching minor colds and flus.

IGA is the dominant antibody in your body's defense system; it is present in saliva and mucosal lining and works as a barrier at the most common points of entry for germs that make you sick.

In a study conducted by Wilkes-Barre University in Pennsylvania, IGA levels were revealed to be significantly higher — at least 33 percent higher — in people that had regular sex with a partner than those who had less frequent sexual encounters. Regardless of length or the emotional health of the relationships, the benefits as a result of sexual activity were the same in the study participants. Not that we're advocating doing it with just anyone!

March 14, 2011

It’s hard to escape the flagrant gender labeling in our society. Dolls and the color pink are associated with girls, while guys are assigned GI Joes and the “manly” color blue. And the trend doesn’t stop at childhood, either. Even the medical industry tends to ascribe certain diseases to men or women, even when both sexes run the risk of developing them.

Recently, there’s been a successful campaign push to educate women about the dangers of heart disease, a condition previously associated with men only. By the same token, there are quite a few health problems facing guys that warrant attention. Men may be less likely to get these diseases than women are, but that doesn’t mean the danger—and the need for preventative measures—isn’t there.

1. Osteoporosis

Look at any advertisement for calcium supplements or osteoporosis treatment, and it’s obvious who’s being targeted—namely, not men. While it’s true that women are more prone to weakened bones, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that two million men have it currently, while twelve million more are at risk. Women have smaller frames, which give them less to work with as calcium depletion rises with age. But while women are often tested for bone density around menopause because their hormonal changes make bones more fragile, men aren’t until something major happens, like a fracture

The Skin Cancer Foundation - American Academy of Pediatrics Calls for Ban on Youth Tanning:"Tanning The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a group of 60,000 pediatricians, today called for all US tanning salons to bar minors. With this new policy statement, the AAP joins health groups such as the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Academy of Dermatology, and The Skin Cancer Foundation in demanding a ban on indoor tanning for young people.
We strongly commend the AAP for this definitive statement pushing for prohibition of indoor tanning for young people,” said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “The damage caused by the UV radiation from tanning beds and the sun is cumulative and often irreversible, and the earlier people start to tan, the higher their risk of developing skin cancer in their lifetimes."

Support needed to help nurses tackle substance abuse, Vanderbilt University:"An estimated 10 percent to 20 percent of nurses and nursing students in the United States may have substance abuse, misuse, dependency or addiction problems. The key to tackling this difficult issue — and protecting public safety — is support and treatment rather than punishment, according to a recent paper in the Journal of Clinical Nursing by Todd Monroe, a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and colleagues at the University of Tennessee. “Doctors and nurses are only human and face the same problems as everyone else, which can include chemical dependency,” said Monroe."

Gillian Ehrlich, RN, 2009-2010 Winners, Nurses' Educational Funds, Inc.:"Gillian Ehrlich's mission is to make holistic health our common ground in medicine and improve universal access to primary care. This vision of health evolved over a decade spent working mainly with non-profit organizations in direct-service level positions. Beginning with the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School and other wilderness programs, she shared with adolescents the elements required for healthy living: food, shelter, community, exercise, purpose and competency, joy and fresh air. Onto this foundation, she added a season of growing organic food for 25 families in southwest Ohio and functioning as a teacher and domestic violence counselor on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Health has been the consistent thread and nursing became the venue for the life-long application of these skills and values. Gillian graduated with a BA/BS degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and a BSN from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She balances her understanding of allopathic medicine with 1000+ hours of Ayurvedic training with Dr. Vasant Lad in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Pune, India. She emerged with sound convictions that health and contentment are possible for each of us, that authentic relationships and a clean environment account for much of this, and that we start healing from whatever shoes in which we currently stand. Gillian currently works as an RN at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington and is studying towards a Doctorate of Nursing Practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Washington. Her focus is relationship-centered care, innovative health delivery systems and integrating complementary and alternative medicine into public health primary care."

How We Got Started, Sarah Cruz, RN, Little Boots Publishing, Rhode Island (RI) Nursing Entrepreneurs:"By some twist of fate, my nursing career has been taken into a new and exciting direction...writing and illustrating storybooks for children. Three years ago our daughter became a burn injury statistic. She sustained a preventable second-degree burn to her hand just a few days before her first birthday that has since healed. Each year too many children are severely burned by various kitchen appliances or by hot foods prepared in the kitchen. The United States has one of the highest rates of burn injury with the peak incidence occurring among children 1 to 5 years of age."

PT Perspective: Heart Disease in Women - Overshadowed and Understated, By: Son Trinh, DPT, Putmebacktogether.com:"It's good to be informed. As PTs, I'd add that it's our responsibility to inform ourselves then to pass on the information to patients. I've come across many women, patients, and co-workers who recognize the dangers of breast cancer and the necessity of research to cure it. Clearly, breast cancer is serious business and the stats are grim. The lifetime prevalence: 1 in 8; number of deaths per year: 40,000. But consider this. Lung cancer claims 70,000 women a year which is more than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined. Of those diagnosed with lung cancer, only 1 in 8 survives. The public consciousness seems misinformed on this."

Legal Consulting by Nurses, By Joy Collins, RN, BSBA, CLNC, LNCC, Wild Iris Medical Education, Inc.:"Nurses have been assisting attorneys with their medically related cases for far longer than is generally realized. It is only lately that the sub-specialty of legal nurse consulting has become a recognized field of nursing that the media has thrust into the mainstream. As far back as the 1980s (and probably earlier), nurses and other medical professionals were assisting the legal world to arrive at a fair settlement by moving through the quagmire of medical records and jargon that we nurses take for granted."
