Hospice, Palliative Care Nurses, Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow/STTI:"The hospice movement has evolved in the United States over the past 25 years. The focus of hospice care is on comprehensive physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual care to terminally ill persons and their families. Hospice providers promote quality of life by protecting patients from burdensome interventions and providing care at home, whenever possibly, instead of the hospital. Hospice nurses provide care primarily under the guidelines of the Medicare Benefit Act of 1983, a federal program that allows patients to die in their homes with their families and friends at their side."

Aging with Dignity:"Something is terribly wrong: The majority of Americans want to die at home surrounded by family and friends, but most end up dying in the hospital or nursing home, cared for by strangers. Half of Americans die in pain that could have been treated. Sick people have come to fear losing their dignity or burdening their families more than they fear death. And this is all happening in a country that is meant to prize the rights of individuals and champion respect for personal wishes."

Single moms report worse health in midlife - Health - Women's health - msnbc.com

Of thousands of mothers who participated in a 30-year study, the ones who had delivered children outside of marriage reported being less healthy when they reached their 40s than the ones who had postponed motherhood until after marriage.

And marriage, when it occurred after motherhood, did not appear to remedy the women's health problems, said study researcher Kristi Williams, an associate professor of sociology at Ohio State University.

The findings suggest public health campaigns to promote marriage, which were started by the government in 1996 and aimed at single, low-income mothers, may not improve these women's health as once hoped, the researchers said.

Ford looks to introduce health, wellness apps to its cars | Healthcare IT News

Cars are already being programmed to parallel park, sense slippery road conditions and alert drivers to impending collisions. Soon they’ll be helping diabetics monitor their blood glucose levels, detect unhealthy air conditions and offer wellness advice.

That’s the plan from the Ford Motor Company, which is working with healthcare companies WellDoc, Medtronic and SDI Health to include health and wellness in-car connectivity solutions on the Ford SYNC platform. The platform makes use of AppLink to allow drivers to access smartphone apps by voice control.

With studies showing that Americans spend more than 500 million “commuter hours” per week in their automobiles, the concept of providing access to information while they’re driving or stuck in traffic is certainly attractive.

ALS Study Falls Short, But Use of Social Media Holds Promise - WSJ.com

A new clinical trial found that lithium didn't slow the progression of Lou Gehrig's disease, but the findings released Sunday also showed that the use of a social network to enroll patients and report and collect data may deliver dividends for future studies.

The study was based on data contributed by 596 patients with the disease, formally called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. By showing that the drug didn't have any effect on progression of the condition, it contradicted a small study three years ago that suggested such a benefit was possible.

The new study, published online in the journal Nature Biotechnology, represents an early example of how social networking could play a role in clinical trials, an area of medical science with strict procedures that many would consider especially difficult to apply in the online world.

"The approach has tremendous potential,'' said Lee Hartwell, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist now at Arizona State University, and formerly president of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Standard clinical trials play a central role in the research enterprise of both of those institutions.

Avoiding Caregiver Burnout, By Donna Cardillo, RN, MA, The Dr. Oz Show

According the National Alliance on Caregiving, over 65 million Americans care for sick, disabled and elderly family members and friends, saving the healthcare system $375 billion dollars annually. But the caregiver or care partner is often overlooked in the process as the focus is on the person who requires the care.

Caregivers often neglect their own self-care and suffer in silence. They have a high rate of stress-related illnesses and disorders, addictions and even worse. Additionally, the stress, if not tended to, can even lead to abuse of the loved one they care for.

What Is a Caregiver/Care Partner?

I didn’t view myself as a caregiver when my husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis because he didn’t need help with dressing or eating. Yet I began to take on responsibility for doctor’s visits, therapy appointments and pharmacy trips, as well as provide emotional support for him and family members.

I would protest: “I am not a caregiver.” But then I read descriptions of my situation on the National Family Caregivers Association website  www.nfcacares.org and finally had to admit that I was stressed, overwhelmed, approaching burnout, and in need of help and support.

Frozen shoulder: Teri Hatcher has frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis - Health Key

The television show "Extra" is reporting that "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher suffers from a disorder called frozen shoulder.  Hatcher told the program that frozen shoulder "is a real condition which women get.  It's basically left me pretty much not functioning with my left arm...I can't hook a bra anymore."

So what else do we know about frozen shoulder?

According to the website of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, occurs when the shoulder capsule -- the strong connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint -- gets inflamed, thickens and tightens.  Often, someone with frozen shoulder also has less synovial fluid to lubricate the joint.

Crohn's Disease Basics & Overview | Healthline

What Is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that causes inflammation, swelling, and deep sores called ulcers in the body’s gastrointestinal (GI) tract (commonly called the digestive tract). Although it can involve any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus, Crohn’s disease most often affects the lower portion of the small intestine (the ileum) and the upper portion of the large intestine (the colon).

Crohn’s disease is similar to another chronic inflammatory condition that affects only the colon—ulcerative colitis. These diseases are part of a larger group of illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis fluctuate between periods of remission (inactivity) and relapse (increased activity). Neither have a medical cure, but medical and alternative therapies can reduce the symptoms that people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis experience during times of relapse. In many cases, these therapies help people maintain a normal lifestyle with few interruptions from the diseases.

Accountable Care Organizations: Improving Care Coordination for People with Medicare | HealthCare.gov

The Affordable Care Act includes a number of policies to help physicians, hospitals, and other caregivers improve the safety and quality of patient care and make health care more affordable.  By focusing on the needs of patients and linking payments to outcomes, these delivery system reforms will help improve the health of individuals and communities and slow cost growth.

On March 31, 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released proposed new rules to help doctors, hospitals, and other providers better coordinate care for Medicare patients through Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).  ACOs create incentives for health care providers to work together to treat an individual patient across care settings – including doctor’s offices, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.  The Medicare Shared Savings Program will reward ACOs that lower growth in health care costs while meeting performance standards on quality of care and putting patients first.  Patient and provider participation in an ACO is purely voluntary.

Probiotic bacteria could help treat Crohn's disease, American Society for Microbiology

New research suggests that infection with a probiotic strain of E. coli bacteria could help treat an reduce the negative effects of another E. coli infection that may be associated with Crohn's disease. Researchrs from the University of Auckland, New Zealand publish their results in the April 2011 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Crohn's disease is a common chronic disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract and is believed to develop as a result of an aberrant immune response to intestinal microbes in a genetically susceptible host. Over the last decade, high levels of adherent invasive E. coli (AIEC) have been reported. One study isolated the bacteria in 36% of Crohn's sufferers compared to just 6% of controls.

Since Crohn's disease is a clinical subtype of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and others have reported successful treatment of IBC with the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917 (EcN), the researchers investigated the impact EcN might have on an already established infection with AIEC in cell cultures mimicking those found in the lining of the intestines.

My neighbor depends more on me for care than on her own family. Caring.com

Last updated: March 30, 2011

iStock_000009798839XSmall

My neighbor and I are both widows and have enjoyed several years of going out to dinner, sharing errands, and even taking a few weekend trips. Last fall she got lung cancer, which has spread. Since her daughter lives two hours away, I took it on myself to check on her daily, provide some meals, and even take her to chemotherapy and other appointments. I was glad to do this -- that's what friends and neighbors should do.

But it's now become a full-time job, and I have my own health concerns. My neighbor is starting to treat me differently, expecting that I take her places and getting upset if I have other plans. I've hinted to the daughter that I can't take on this much care. But now I feel stuck -- and guilty for not doing more.

How do I get her daughter to provide the care that family should give, so that I can go back to being a good neighbor and friend?

Ross Kristal: Establishing a BODY of Work to Combat Obesity & Diabetes | Einstein Features

While the explosion of diabetes is making headlines the world over, a group of Einstein students is taking the fight against obesity and diabetes to the streets of the Bronx. Spearheaded by first-year student Ross Kristal, the newly established student club Bronx, Obesity, Diabetes and You (BODY) has ambitious goals and a wide- ranging agenda that they hope will change lives in the Bronx as well as the mindset of the community-at-large.

Ross Kristal
Ross Kristal
The group has identified three major initiatives they plan to undertake — working on exercise and nutrition with elementary school children at P.S. 89; establishing a community garden on the grounds of Einstein’s neighbor, the Jack D. Weiler Hospital; and engaging Bronx community leaders through grassroots outreach to effect educational efforts that can help change attitudes and improve health.

“I am amazed at what Ross and the other students have accomplished so far and that they have chosen to focus on type 2 diabetes, which most people don’t care as much about,” said Dr. Meredith Hawkins, director of the Global Diabetes Initiative and professor of medicine at Einstein, who mentored Mr. Kristal during a summer research project he completed before starting his medical education.

To Mr. Kristal, it all makes perfect sense. “I think that type 2 diabetes is going to be one of the biggest health problems our country faces in the future,” he said, “and we must reach out to the community and start making a difference now.”

Women living with HIV fight challenges through photography

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but for women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, a picture can help them deal with the challenges of living with the virus.

A University of Missouri researcher is completing a pilot project during which women living with HIV take photos to document their lives. The photos are used to engage women in critical discussions about their lives, identifying both social, mental, and physical challenges and possible solutions for the women. The photos will be presented at two special events. The first event will be held on March 3-6 in Columbia at the True/False Film Festival. The second event will be held on March 19 in St. Louis at the Regional Arts Commission to commemorate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

"Women with HIV face more challenges than most intervention programs are designed to address," said Michelle Teti, assistant professor of health psychology in the MU School of Health Professions. "These women need to discuss more issues than merely how to have safe sex. Many live in poverty, with substandard housing and abusive partners. Helping women understand and address these issues is what this project is all about."

Looking Photos of Loved Ones Gives Relief from Pain | TopNews United States

According to the scientists at Stanford University, looking pictures of loved ones reduces pain.

Their study revealed that watching image of romantic partner dulls the activity in the pain-processing part of the brain, to a same degree as paracetamol or cocaine.

In this study, brains of love struck students were subjected to MRI scan as they were made to focus on their love partners while varying heat pains were given on their skin.

Neuroscientist Jarred Younger found that average pain got reduced by 36 to 44 percent and intense pain got reduced by 13 percent.

In a study published in the U. S. journal Public Library of Science, the post-doctoral scholar said, "The reduction of pain is associated with higher, cortical parts of the brain."

It was found that more primitive aspect of the brain block pain at a spinal level, quite similar to how opoid analgesics work.

Key site for love-induced analgesia is the nucleus accumbens, a key reward addition centre for opoids, and other drugs. This tells us that we do not need to depend on drugs to reduce pain.

Researchers at the University of California found that women showed significant reduction in pain experience while holding their partner’s hand.

The internet gives patients and caregivers access not only to information, but also to each other. | Pew Internet & American Life Project

Many Americans turn to friends and family for support and advice when they have a health problem. This report shows how people’s networks are expanding to include online peers, particularly in the crucible of rare disease. Health professionals remain the central source of information for most Americans, but "peer-to-peer healthcare" is a significant supplement.

This report is based in part on a national telephone survey of 3,001 adults which captures an estimate of how widespread this activity is in the U.S. All numerical data included in the report is based on the telephone survey. The other part of the analysis is based on an online survey of 2,156 members of the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) who wrote short essays about their use of the internet in caring for themselves or for their loved ones.

Study: Global obesity rates double since 1980 - USATODAY.com

Obesity rates worldwide have doubled in the last three decades even as blood pressure and cholesterol levels have dropped, according to three new studies.

People in Pacific Island nations like American Samoa are the heaviest, one of the studies shows. Among developed countries, Americans are the fattest and the Japanese are the slimmest.

"Being obese is no longer just a Western problem," said Majid Ezzati, a professor of public health at Imperial College London, one of the study's authors.

In 1980, about 5% of men and 8% of women worldwide were obese. By 2008, the rates were nearly 10% for men and 14% for women.

That means 205 million men and 297 million women weighed in as obese. Another 1.5 billion adults were overweight, according to the obesity study.

Though richer countries did a better job of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control, researchers said people nearly everywhere are piling on the pounds, except in a few places including central Africa and South Asia. The studies were published Friday in the medical journal, Lancet.

New Dietary Guidelines Recommend Americans Eat Less, Exercise More on ADVANCE for Nurses

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans released by the federal government Jan. 31, offers "evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity."

Because more than one-third of children and more than two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, this 7th edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans places stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity. The new guidelines encourage Americans to consume more healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood, and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars and refined grains.

The new guidelines include 23 "Key Recommendations" for the general population and six additional "Key Recommendations" for specific population groups, such as women who are pregnant. These recommendations are the most important messages within the guidelines in terms of their implications for improving public health, according to the government.

More consumer-friendly advice and tools, including a "next generation Food Pyramid," will be released by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the Dept. of Health and Human Services in the coming months.

Below is a preview of some of the tips that will be provided to help consumers translate the guidelines into their everyday lives:

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions.
  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
  • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals - and choose the foods with lower numbers.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Mandated by Congress, the guidelines form the basis of nutrition education programs, federal nutrition assistance programs such as school meals programs and Meals on Wheels programs for seniors, and dietary advice provided by health professionals.

Additionally, the guidelines aid policymakers in designing and implementing nutrition-related programs. They also provide education and health professionals, such as nutritionists, dietitians and health educators with a compilation of the latest science-based recommendations. A table with key consumer behaviors and potential strategies for professionals to use in implementing the guidelines is included in the appendix.

Asthma On The Rise: 25 Million In The U.S. Affected : Shots - Health News Blog : NPR

If asthma sometimes seems to be everywhere, it's not exactly your imagination.

Federal health officials estimate nearly 1 in 12 Americans, or nearly 25 million people have the respiratory disorder. That works out to 8.2 percent of the population in 2009, the latest year covered by the research.

The results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appear in this report.

The prevalence of asthma is up a little lately, from 7.7 percent in 2005.  How come? One reason is that doctors are looking for it more and are better at detecting it. The biggest increases in diagnosed asthma occurred in the '80s and '90s.

Asthma attacks, the severe breathing problems that can land someone in the hospital, affected 12.8 million people in the United States, or 4.2 percent of the population, in 2009. Attacks have held pretty steady for more than a decade.
