Artificial Food Dyes Scrutinized by FDA - WSJ.com

A Food and Drug Administration panel plans to meet this week to consider the potential link between hyperactivity in children and artificial dyes found in common foods such as candy, waffles and salad dressing.

The FDA is reconsidering its long-held position that the dyes pose no risk to children or anyone else. Artificial food dyes with names like Yellow 5 have long been targeted by some scientists and consumer advocates concerned that they could cause hyperactivity in children.

The panel, which will meet Wednesday and Thursday, is expected to possibly call for more research. It isn't expected to take bigger steps such as banning artificial coloring.

The FDA signaled the first change in its thinking last week in a memo that said artificial food dye is an issue "for certain susceptible children with ADHD [attention deficit hyperactivity disorder] and other problem behaviors." The FDA said there isn't a link between hyperactivity and food dyes in the general population.

Food safety, drug safety, and pregnancy information are among eight new topics included in our survey. | Pew Internet & American Life Project

Health information remains one of the most important subjects that internet users research online. The Pew Internet Project and California HealthCare Foundation have added eight new topics to our national survey measuring internet users’ interest in health information:

29% of internet users look online for information about food safety or recalls.

24% of internet users look online for information about drug safety or recalls.

19% of internet users look online for information about pregnancy and childbirth.

17% of internet users look online for information about memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s.

16% of internet users look online for information about medical test results.

14% of internet users look online for information about how to manage chronic pain.

12% of internet users look online for information about long-term care for an elderly or disabled person.

7% of internet users look online for information about end-of-life decisions.

Fast response crucial in outbreaks of food-borne illness, study finds - USATODAY.com

Nearly three years after a nationwide salmonella outbreak that sickened about 1,500 people and claimed two lives, U.S. epidemiologists have learned that speed is of the essence in identifying sources of food contamination and preventing further infection.
But speed requires resources that cost money and, as an editorial accompanying the paper in the Feb. 23 online issue of the
New England Journal of Medicine points out, funds may not be forthcoming.
Although the recently signed Food Safety Modernization Act could help the U.S. Food and Drug Administration respond better to outbreaks of food-borne illness, the reality is that Congress still needs to authorize the money, the editorial stated.

What Does the New Food Safety Law Mean for You? | FoodSafety.gov

Just before Christmas, the House of Representatives and the Senate passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, which President Obama signed into law on January 4, 2011. Here’s a quick look at some of the provisions in the new law:

Issuing recalls: For the first time, FDA will have the authority to order a recall of food products. Up to now, with the exception of infant formula, the FDA has had to rely on food manufacturers and distributors to recall food voluntarily.
Conducting inspections: The law calls for more frequent inspections and for those inspections to be based on risk. Foods and facilities that pose a greater risk to food safety will get the most attention
Importing food: The law provides significant enhancements to FDA's ability to oversee food produced in foreign countries and imported into the United States. Also, FDA has the authority to prevent a food from entering this country if the facility has refused U.S. inspection.
Preventing problems: Food facilities must have a written plan that spells out the possible problems that could affect the safety of their products. The plan would outline steps that the facility would take to help prevent those problems from occurring.
