Hospice, Palliative Care Nurses, Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow/STTI:"The hospice movement has evolved in the United States over the past 25 years. The focus of hospice care is on comprehensive physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual care to terminally ill persons and their families. Hospice providers promote quality of life by protecting patients from burdensome interventions and providing care at home, whenever possibly, instead of the hospital. Hospice nurses provide care primarily under the guidelines of the Medicare Benefit Act of 1983, a federal program that allows patients to die in their homes with their families and friends at their side."

National Hospice Organization:"The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is the largest nonprofit membership organization representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the United States. The organization is committed to improving end of life care and expanding access to hospice care with the goal of profoundly enhancing quality of life for people dying in America and their loved ones. Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient's home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Aging with Dignity:"Something is terribly wrong: The majority of Americans want to die at home surrounded by family and friends, but most end up dying in the hospital or nursing home, cared for by strangers. Half of Americans die in pain that could have been treated. Sick people have come to fear losing their dignity or burdening their families more than they fear death. And this is all happening in a country that is meant to prize the rights of individuals and champion respect for personal wishes."

Updated: May 5, 2011 | 2:45 p.m.

Maj. Gen. Patricia Horoho would become the first nurse and the first woman to serve as the Army Surgeon General if the Senate confirms her nomination and simultaneous promotion to lieutenant general, which were announced by Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday.

Horoho currently serves as Army deputy surgeon general and 23rd chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps.

Another nurse, Maj. Gen. Gale Pollock, served as acting Army surgeon general from March through December 2007, temporarily filling the post after Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley was relieved of command as a result of poor patient care at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Cool ways that Nurses Week will be celebrated in 2011, Scrubsmag.com

Minnesota
Pediatric Home Service (PHS), based in Roseville, Minn., is a home care agency that provides specialized services to children with complex medical conditions. As you can imagine, planning events for nurses who are out on home visits all day long is difficult, but the folks at PHS have found some simple ways to honor their nurses and make them feel appreciated. Throughout the week, nurses who come into the company’s head office will engage in a scavenger hunt, with the clues being rhymes that include tidbits of educational information and the prize being a little token—last year it was a pacifier. At the end of the week, nurses and staff are invited to connect and interact with each other as they enjoy a treat at an ice cream social.
