Hospice, Palliative Care Nurses, Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow/STTI:"The hospice movement has evolved in the United States over the past 25 years. The focus of hospice care is on comprehensive physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual care to terminally ill persons and their families. Hospice providers promote quality of life by protecting patients from burdensome interventions and providing care at home, whenever possibly, instead of the hospital. Hospice nurses provide care primarily under the guidelines of the Medicare Benefit Act of 1983, a federal program that allows patients to die in their homes with their families and friends at their side."

National Hospice Organization:"The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is the largest nonprofit membership organization representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the United States. The organization is committed to improving end of life care and expanding access to hospice care with the goal of profoundly enhancing quality of life for people dying in America and their loved ones. Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient's home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Aging with Dignity:"Something is terribly wrong: The majority of Americans want to die at home surrounded by family and friends, but most end up dying in the hospital or nursing home, cared for by strangers. Half of Americans die in pain that could have been treated. Sick people have come to fear losing their dignity or burdening their families more than they fear death. And this is all happening in a country that is meant to prize the rights of individuals and champion respect for personal wishes."

Nursing. It’s Not Just a Career – It’s a Calling

Nursing. It’s not just a career – it’s a calling.

My hospital used that as an advertising campaign a few years back. Effective, yes, but is it true?

We think of nursing as a job, our work, a profession (which it is). It’s what we do – a choice we’ve made. Nurses can live comfortably on our incomes and even in hard times, there are usually jobs to be had.

And the variety! E.R. and flight nursing for adrenaline junkies, floor nursing for those gifted in multi-tasking, Intensive Care for techies, hospice, school nursing, home and public health – the list goes on and on.

I went around the unit last week asking random colleagues why they’d become nurses. Had they pro-and-conned their way into the field, decided they needed something to “fall back on” (as my mother used to say), or heard a voice from Heaven?

Gearing Up for Management by Donna Cardillo, RN, MA, Cardillo & Associates

Gearing Up for Management
by Donna Cardillo, RN, MA

Are you a staff nurse who aspires to someday move into a supervisory role? Would you like to eventually work in nursing or health care administration? Are you considering a leadership role in a professional association or community group? Here are some steps to get you moving in the right direction.

Have a heart-to-heart talk with your supervisor. Let your supervisor know about your aspirations, and ask for assignments that would help prepare you for that role. Ask your supervisor how he or she got started and what was learned along the way. You can have this discussion during an annual evaluation — or, better yet, make a special appointment to sit down and discuss your career goals.

Work on your formal education. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for most management positions. Having a master’s degree will give you a competitive edge. It’s not just the credential that’s helpful here; it’s the knowledge and skill you’ll acquire pursuing that degree. Nurse managers hold a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees these days, including those in nursing, business, health care management, and public health. There’s no one “right” degree to have.

Reflections of an Orthopedic Nurse, Laurie Styrcula, RN, MA, Nursingspectrum.com:"As I pushed my lunch tray along the counter in the hospital cafeteria, I sensed someone watching me. I looked to my left and noticed a nurse scanning my name tag. “You must be a special kind of nurse,” she said. She smiled at me and added, “I could never take care of dying patients.” I looked down at my name tag to see what she was referring to. In bold letters was printed “Laurie Styrcula, RN, MA, ONC.” I returned her smile with a quiet sigh and tried not to sound rehearsed, even though it seemed as if I’d repeated these words at least a dozen times: “You have me mistaken for an oncology nurse. The ONC on my name badge stands for orthopedic nurse certified. I believe oncology nurses are OCN.”

Healthcare jobs now make up 10.7 % of U.S. employment, study says

Private-sector healthcare now comprises a higher percentage of total U.S. employment than ever before, reaching 10.7 percent, according to a new report from the Altarum Institute.

That figure represents an increase of more than one percentage point since the start of the recession in December 2007, when private-sector healthcare represented 9.5 percent of total employment. The study was done by the Altarum Institute’s Center for Studying Health Spending. The analysis is based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The growth in healthcare jobs contrasts with the rest of the economy. The study shows that while healthcare employment increased 6.3 percent since December 2007, non-healthcare employment has fallen by 6.8 percent.

Charles Roehrig, director of Altarum’s Center for Studying Health Spending, said in a statement that while healthcare jobs have helped offset the declines in other sectors, the health sector is likely to peak in the near future.

“Although health employment will continue to rise, we expect non-health employment will grow more rapidly so that health employment’s share of the total will stabilize,” he said.

Any questions, please drop me a line.

Annette Tersigni 58 by The Yoga Nurse, More.com:"Greetings readers. This is an absolutely fabulous time in my life. Why? I was once a Hollywood model and actress living a glamorous life, but while still enjoying a successful livelihood felt inspired to do something more with my life. This feeling led me to become a registered nurse, move to the East Coast and start my nursing career in the cardiac unit of a local North Carolina hospital. I first started using my therapeutic skills to help my co-workers deal with daily job stress. I then began incorporating yoga and meditation as forms of therapy with my patients and saw excellent results. I realized integrating yoga therapy and nursing was a valuable service that could benefit patients and people from all walks of life. With that in mind, I founded Yoga Nurse Medical Yoga and Stress Management and created a new field in health care called Yoga Nursing and I am now called the Yoga Nurse."
