Content drives conversations. Conversation engages your customers.
Engaging with people is how your company will survive and thrive in this newly social world. In other words, online content is a powerful envoy for your business, with an ability to stir up interest, further engagement, and invite connections. Why hasn’t the healthcare industry focused more on better content that drives engagement and creates trust?
Creating and sharing relevant, valuable information that attracts people to you and creates trust, credibility, and authority for your brand and that ultimately converts visitors and browsers into patients. The one who has the more engaging content wins, because frequent and regular contact builds a relationship. Yet 99% of most content on drug websites is boring, hard to read and overly promotional. What we have here is a classic example of failure to communicate.

I woke up this morning to a couple of DMs from physicians alerting me to the Twitter thread seen below (tweets read bottom to top). Is it unprofessional? Decide for yourself.
Whether you change details or not, the use of the social space at the comical expense of those we’re called to treat is irresponsible. While the detailed depiction of the patient’s problem is bad enough, the suggestion that you would have somehow ‘fixed’ the situation long before 36 hours is reprehensible. This is something I’d expect from a frat house, not a treating physician. Of course this level of dialog could only be sustained by someone hiding conveniently behind the cloak of anonymity. Case in point for putting your name and maskless face behind everything you say.

While participating in the workshop on Revisiting Research Ethics in the Facebook Era: Challenges in Emerging CSCW Research, the question arose as to whether it was ethical for researchers to follow and systematically capture public Twitter streams without first obtaining specific, informed consent by the subjects. Many in the room felt that consent was not necessary since the tweets are public, a conscious choice made by the user to allow the whole world see her activity. In short, by not restricting access to one’s account, there is no expectation of privacy.
I argued, however, that we cannot be so quick to presume the expectations of potential research subjects. Yes, setting one’s Twitter stream to public does mean that anyone can search for you, follow you, and view your activity. However, there is a reasonable expectation that one’s tweet stream will be “practically obscure” within the thousands (if not millions) of tweets similarly publicly viewable. Yes, the subject has consented to making her tweets visible to those who take the time and energy to seek her out, those who have a genuine interest to connect and view her activity through this social network.
But she did not automatically consent, I argue, to having her tweet stream systematically followed, harvested, archived, and mined by researchers (no matter the positive intent of such research). That is not what is expected when making a Twitter account public, and it is my opinion that researchers should seek consent prior to capturing and using this data.

Social networking allows doctors, nurses and other health professionals to deeply connect and engage with the community and their colleagues.
“We are standing at the precipice of a new online revolution in health care. As more and more health experts embrace the Internet and increase their social media activity, health information seekers will undoubtedly benefit in profound ways.” [Source: Mashable]
Dynamic health and medical professionals engaged in social networking, using Twitter, Facebook, Blogs and YouTube are on the front-line of new modern medicine.
While many health consumers are searching the web for support, reassurance and specific health news and information; doctors and nurses continue to question the value of the internet for patients.

Eighty-three percent of online registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses report recommending health-related websites to patients in 2010, compared with 59% of online physicians, according to a new Manhattan Research report.
The study also found that nearly 90% of online RNs and APRNs visited a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or device website in the past 12 months.
Although most online RNs and APRNs use social networking sites for personal reasons, a relatively small percentage uses professional online communities.
Results are based on a Q2 2010 online survey of a nationally representative sample of 1,053 U.S. practicing nurses and physicians.

Part of the problem may be that Organized Wisdom doesn’t only share links from “Health Centers”, but also from Wellness Centers (Aging, Diet, Exercise & Fitness etc) and Living Centers (Beauty, Cooking, Environment). Apparently one card can have information for 2 or 3 centers (diabetes and multivitamins for example)

Matthew? How many other expert profiles are "unclaimed" out of 5700? How many of your "Touted" experts have no idea, they are being used?
As a Registered Nurse, Business Owner and Licensed Nurse, I'd strongly object to a website profiling me, then submitting my name, picture and likeness to promote their site.
It is especially misleading for Organized Wisdom to do this since it implies that their curators endorse the links, Drug Advertising and consumer advocacy mission the site claims to be on.

Registered Nurse, we review and approve healthcare websites on our site. Follow/Search us for Diabetes, Cancer, Cardiac, Respiratory, Drug Resources and more.
Every morning at 5:30 AM, I am at my computer scouring the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and other news sources for articles about health care and wellness.
These articles are then summarized in 140 characters with a link to the original article and tweeted. As of today there are 3700 followers of my informal aggregated health care news service, and I hear about it if I am late or slack off on the job. My Twitter community depends on me, and I depend on them.
Twitter has transformed my professional life as an independent physician executive consultant-keynoter who advises health systems and medical groups. Twitter is the main tool I use to monitor the latest developments in the world of health care delivery, payment reform, and physician integration.
I follow about 1,000 health care professionals on Twitter, and I often learn about developments in real-time long before they hit the newspapers and journal articles.

Twitter chats are simply pre-organized times to tweet on pre-organized hashtags. They use applications like twebevent or TweetChat to corral just those tweets together and to auto-tag any new tweets with the right hashtag.
The Chat Schedule began as a quick solution so that no one person had to track and manage the information about all the Twitter Chats. There were only about 25 chats back then. It has since grown into a list of well over 100 that gets hundreds of hits a day and adds several chats a week.
Everyone from journalists to moms to finance people to Knowledge Management professionals are finding each other and banding together via Twitter chats. See more info about the Twitter Chat Experience
I fully expected that someone would write a little database driven web app that would replace the public Google Doc, but perhaps simpler is better in this case.
Thanks to all who run the chats, all who have posted information about chats, and all who tweet the link to the list so that more potential chatters can find one that’s right for them.

Found #rnchat, #ivchat and lots of other healthcare related chats on Robert's list.

A new clinical trial found that lithium didn't slow the progression of Lou Gehrig's disease, but the findings released Sunday also showed that the use of a social network to enroll patients and report and collect data may deliver dividends for future studies.
The study was based on data contributed by 596 patients with the disease, formally called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. By showing that the drug didn't have any effect on progression of the condition, it contradicted a small study three years ago that suggested such a benefit was possible.
The new study, published online in the journal Nature Biotechnology, represents an early example of how social networking could play a role in clinical trials, an area of medical science with strict procedures that many would consider especially difficult to apply in the online world.
"The approach has tremendous potential,'' said Lee Hartwell, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist now at Arizona State University, and formerly president of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Standard clinical trials play a central role in the research enterprise of both of those institutions.
