More primary care tied to lower death rates | Reuters

Seniors living in areas with more primary care have slightly lower death rates and are less likely to end up in the hospital with a preventable disease, U.S. researchers have found.

In contrast to some earlier studies, which have yielded mixed results, the new work looked at how much primary care was actually delivered to patients -- not just how many primary care physicians were in a certain area.

"The magic is not in how many primary care physicians there are, it is what they do," said Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Primary Care Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who was not involved in the study.

A Silent Epidemic of Needle Injuries - NYTimes.com

Craig Dilger for The New York Times Medical students appear to be at high risk for needle injuries.

Surgical students are frequently stuck by needles, but many students don’t bother reporting the injuries, a new study found.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University surveyed 699 recent medical school graduates who had trained to become surgeons at 17 medical centers in the United States. The survey found that 59 percent had been stuck by a needle at some point during medical school, according to the study, in the December issue of Academic Medicine.

Inadvertent needle sticks are a concern to both doctor and patient. A health care worker accidentally pierced by a needle is at risk for contracting hepatitis C or H.I.V. or developing an infection. And if the health care worker already has a blood borne illness, a needle stick injury could expose patients to a droplet of infected blood.

Why medical students are burning out and lacking altruism, KevinMD.com

Recently, AAFP News Now released an article titled, Unprofessional Conduct Among U.S. Medical Students Linked to Burnout.

It focused on an article recently released in JAMA entitled, Relationship Between Burnout and Professional Conduct and Attitudes Among US Medical Students.

I had the opportunity to be interviewed for this article and was featured on an inset within the article that shared a minority of my interview. As I am currently rotating on inpatient medicine at a local community hospital, I am once again experiencing our health care system at its finest – a lot of wasteful spending and unnecessary testing. I am taking a look back at what I had wrote down for the interview and decided to paraphrase the majority of my response into the following blog post regarding the health care system and medical education.

When looking at the advances we have made in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, we are being asked to know so much more information in much greater detail – and still within these 4 years worth of medical school.As more requirements are created and more scientific advances are brought forth, more time is needed in lecture and studying for tests like the USMLE and shelf exams. Most traditional programs are 4 years with 2 years of foundational science and 2 years of clinical experience.
