Asthma Pill As Effective As Inhalers And Easier To Use

Leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) pills are just as effective as inhalers in managing asthma symptoms, and are much easier to use, researchers from the University of East Anglia, England reported in NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine).

LTRAs are infrequently prescribed as an alternative to inhalers because some people believed them to be less effective. This latest study shows they are effective.

Examples of LTRAs include Singulair (montelukast) and Accolate (zafirlukast). In the United Kingdom guidelines recommend LTRAs as a third step in asthma management.

Prof David Price and team monitored 650 asthma patients for 24 months. There was clear evidence that LTRAs are not only just as effective as inhalers, they are also much more user-friendly.

World TB Day, March 24, 2011, March 21, 2011 News Release - National Institutes of Health (NIH)

World TB Day
March 24, 2011

Statement of Christine F. Sizemore, Ph.D., and Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
National Institutes of Health

The theme of World TB Day 2011 — "On the move against TB: Transforming the fight towards elimination"— reflects renewed momentum to approach the global problem of tuberculosis with greater intensity and seriousness of purpose. This growing interest is broad-based, emerging from leaders in public health to laboratory scientists, from physicians to activists.

Today, about one-third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the bacterium that causes TB. Most people have no symptoms because the bacterium is inactive, or latent, but individuals with symptoms of active TB disease can infect others. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, in 2009 more than 14 million people had active TB, leading to 1.7 million deaths, or 4,600 deaths each day. Among people infected with the bacteria, those who have certain other conditions, such as HIV/AIDS and diabetes, are more likely to develop active TB and to die from it. Because of this deadly synergy, TB has become the leading cause of death among people with HIV/AIDS.

Although TB control programs have led to a decline in cases worldwide, the emergence and spread of drug-resistant strains of Mtb challenge the way we currently approach TB diagnosis and treatment. Extensively drug-resistant TB, while relatively rare, has been confirmed in 58 countries, including the United States, and likely is present in many more. It has become necessary not just to identify the infection but also to determine the proper therapy for patients at the earliest stages of disease.

Diet - High Fiber Intake Linked With Longer Life - NYTimes.com

A study of almost 400,000 people aged 50 to 71 has found a strong link between a high-fiber diet and a longer life.

Specifically, subjects who ate a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables (adding up to 29 grams of fiber per day for men, 26 grams for women) were 22 percent less likely to die after nine years than those who ate the least fiber (13 and 11 grams per day), according to the study, in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Those in the high-fiber group were less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, infectious disease and respiratory disease; a high-fiber diet was also associated with fewer cancer deaths in men, though not in women.

The lower death rates were associated with dietary fiber from whole grains, said the lead author, Dr. Yikyung Park, a staff scientist at the National Cancer Institute.

“One of our findings was that fiber has anti-inflammatory properties,” Dr. Park said, adding that grains are also rich in beneficial vitamins, minerals and chemicals.

People who ate more fiber were generally healthier, more educated and more physically active to begin with, the authors noted. But the study adjusted for these differences.

At the start of the study, all participants filled out 124-item food frequency questionnaires. Nine years later, 20,126 men and 11,330 women had died.

Asthma On The Rise: 25 Million In The U.S. Affected : Shots - Health News Blog : NPR

If asthma sometimes seems to be everywhere, it's not exactly your imagination.

Federal health officials estimate nearly 1 in 12 Americans, or nearly 25 million people have the respiratory disorder. That works out to 8.2 percent of the population in 2009, the latest year covered by the research.

The results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appear in this report.

The prevalence of asthma is up a little lately, from 7.7 percent in 2005.  How come? One reason is that doctors are looking for it more and are better at detecting it. The biggest increases in diagnosed asthma occurred in the '80s and '90s.

Asthma attacks, the severe breathing problems that can land someone in the hospital, affected 12.8 million people in the United States, or 4.2 percent of the population, in 2009. Attacks have held pretty steady for more than a decade.

CDC - Seasonal Influenza (Flu) - Flu Information for Parents

Flu Information for Parents

Flu is more dangerous than the common cold for children. Each year, flu places a large burden on the health and well-being of children and families. An influenza vaccination is the best method for preventing flu and its potentially severe complications in children. CDC recommends that all children 6 months and older get a flu vaccine.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) makes it hard for you to breathe. Coughing up mucus is often the first sign of COPD. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are common COPDs.

Your airways branch out inside your lungs like an upside-down tree. At the end of each branch are small, balloon-like air sacs. In healthy people, both the airways and air sacs are springy and elastic. When you breathe in, each air sac fills with air like a small balloon. The balloon deflates when you exhale. In COPD, your airways and air sacs lose their shape and become floppy, like a stretched-out rubber band.

Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD. Breathing in other kinds of irritants, like pollution, dust or chemicals, may also cause or contribute to COPD. Quitting smoking is the best way to avoid developing COPD.

Treatment can make you more comfortable, but there is no cure.
