Protecting the health of patients and our national health system, and promoting nurses and the nursing profession at the national level - and doing it effectively - is the job of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. New York Professional Nurses Union:"The New York Professional Nurses Union has represented the nurses at Lenox Hill Hospital since 1985. The staff RNs knew that no big union could represent them better than they could represent themselves, so they started their own grassroots organization. This is a very precarious time for health care workers and nurses in particular: many of our colleagues in neighboring hospitals are discovering the devastating consequences of not having a union to represent them. Our leaders know firsthand of the challenges nurses face, since they are also nurses working side by side with our members. They aim to make a contribution to the hospital while preserving the respect of the people that make the hospital run."

Nurse Active:"Hello! This page is largely the personal effort of Charlene Long, with some barely tolerated and largely unsought and unnecessary advice from her partner in crime, Bill Long. Both are registered nurses in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Both work in acute care in a now small community hospital that serves a region of approximately 20,000 people in the northeastern part of the province. A small university town. A good place to live. Both became involved in the "Web" and social activism through activity with the Nova Scotia Nurses' Union. This page is part of an effort to move beyond (but not away from) that limited level of endeavour and to attempt to expose more nurses and others to the influences that are changing the world around us..........changes that we live with and adapt to every day, but seldom appreciate for their profundity and scope."

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."

On February 23rd blow the whistle on bullying, BC Nurses Union

Wednesday February 23rd is Anti-Bullying Day also known as Pink Shirt Day. The goal is to raise awareness of the harmful impacts of workplace bullying. BCNU members and stewards will be taking action to highlight this important day at worksites throughout the province.

Bullying and horizontal violence in nursing

In 2005 Statistics Canada reported that bullying and horizontal violence affects many Canadian nurses:

  • Almost 50 percent of nurses report emotional abuse at work
  • 46 percent of nurses report they were exposed to hostility or conflict from co-workers

Bullying is aggressive, persistent and intentional behaviour where any reasonable person should know their behaviour is unwelcome by the victim.

Bullying isn't normal rudeness or properly discharged managerial activities. Bullying is more than normal workplace conflict – it creates toxic workplaces that are often difficult to change. If you believe bullying is an issue at your worksite, contact your BCNU steward.

To make a difference in your workplace, know your "Respect in the Workplace" policy and procedures. To learn more about bullying:

Nurses Blast Obama Administration for Removing OSHA Safety Rule on ADVANCE for Nurses

National Nurses United (NNU) is sharply criticizing the Obama administration for a decision by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Tuesday to withdraw a rule requiring employers to report musculoskeletal injuries to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

"This is a disturbing sign that the Obama administration may be putting the economic interests of employers ahead of the safety of nurses and other working people," says Karen Higgins, RN, co-president of the 160,000-member nurses union.

The decades-old rule reportedly was pulled by the DOL at the request of the White House's Office of Management and Budget. The decision, according to NNU, "coincides with the recent announcement by the Obama administration that it intends to pursue deregulation of rules opposed by corporate interests.

"Nursing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S., and nurses are especially subject to serious back and other musculoskeletal injuries," says Higgins. "One step we can take to keep nurses safe and at work is to have an accurate picture of when and how they are hurt on the job."

Hundreds of Oakland nurses strike against health care cuts : Local: In Oakland

Hundreds of Oakland nurses strike against health care cuts : Local: In Oakland:"Nurses in multi-colored scrubs lined the streets in front of Children's Hospital Oakland Tuesday, striking against what they say is a proposed cut in their health care benefits. Passing cars, BART trains and fire engines honked in support of the hospital's nearly 800 registered nurses as they began a three-day strike led by the California Nurses Association (CNA). The hospital will continue operating with over 100 replacement nurses until the strike is scheduled to end Friday morning."
