Fighting Childhood Obesity in Minority Communities | MinorityNurse.com

The eight-year-old girl in Dr. Sheila Davis’ qualitative study on childhood obesity weighed 205 pounds.

The little girl and 16 other children and their parents were meeting with Davis and her research team. Why, Davis asked her, do you want to lose weight? “Because I don’t want the earth to move,” the girl replied. “When I jump rope, the children say it feels like an earthquake.”

The obesity epidemic currently sweeping the United States is a particularly poignant problem for the nation’s children. A full 30% of all kids age six to 19 are overweight, and their numbers have doubled in the last decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Among minority populations in this country, the numbers are even more alarming. Statistics from the CDC show that more than 33% of Hispanic/Latino boys are overweight, as are 35.7% of African-American boys and 51.2% of Mexican-American boys. As for female children, 30.1% of Hispanic/Latino girls, 46.4% of African-American girls and 36.7% of Mexican-American girls are overweight.

Budget Cuts Spell Crisis for Women with HIV « SpeakEasy

Rallies for workers’ rights in Wisconsin and other states have raised critical awareness about the potential implications — and targets — of budget cuts across the US. But in addition to the fate of unions and public sector employees at the local and state level — the majority of whom are women — the battle over budgets will also determine the fate of key social services, many of them on which women and children in particular depend.

Nothing makes this more real for us at the Ms. Foundation than when our grantees report how budget cuts will impact — indeed, threaten — their own programs and their own communities. For example, just a few weeks ago, the Washington Department of Health decided to cut funding for the state’s only women-specific HIV/AIDS education and support program — a program run by Seattle-based BABES Network-YWCA, our longtime grantee. This decision, BABES tells us, along with an additional funding cut at the county level, will result in a 75 percent reduction in their program budget — an untenable outcome that will leave hundreds of women without critical support services.

CDC Data & Statistics | Feature: An Estimated 3.1 Million Hispanic Adults Have Arthritis

Pain and activity limitations are more common among all Hispanics with arthritis than among whites. Exercise can help ease arthritis pain and activity limitations.

An estimated 3.1 million Hispanic adults in the United States have arthritis. A newly released CDC study provides information on the burden of arthritis among specific Hispanic groups in the United States. CDC found the prevalence of arthritis varied across Hispanic populations, ranging from 12% among Cuban/Cuban-Americans to 22% among Puerto Ricans.

Post-Stroke Depression Threatens Independence

The researchers examined data on 367 survivors of ischemic stroke, the type of stroke caused by a blood clot. The patients had an average age of 62, with no impairments in thinking or severe language problems.

One month after suffering strokes, 174 of the survivors were diagnosed with post-stroke depression.

The survivors’ level of independence was rated using a zero to five scale, with five representing the most severely dependent and disabled.

Three months later, 20% or 72 of the participants were considered dependent, scoring a level three or higher. But 80%, or 295 of the participants, were considered independent.

5 "Women's Diseases" Your Husband Can Get - Nursing Link

Vicki Santillano | DivineCaroline

March 14, 2011

It’s hard to escape the flagrant gender labeling in our society. Dolls and the color pink are associated with girls, while guys are assigned GI Joes and the “manly” color blue. And the trend doesn’t stop at childhood, either. Even the medical industry tends to ascribe certain diseases to men or women, even when both sexes run the risk of developing them.

Recently, there’s been a successful campaign push to educate women about the dangers of heart disease, a condition previously associated with men only. By the same token, there are quite a few health problems facing guys that warrant attention. Men may be less likely to get these diseases than women are, but that doesn’t mean the danger—and the need for preventative measures—isn’t there.

1. Osteoporosis

Look at any advertisement for calcium supplements or osteoporosis treatment, and it’s obvious who’s being targeted—namely, not men. While it’s true that women are more prone to weakened bones, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that two million men have it currently, while twelve million more are at risk. Women have smaller frames, which give them less to work with as calcium depletion rises with age. But while women are often tested for bone density around menopause because their hormonal changes make bones more fragile, men aren’t until something major happens, like a fracture

Hurting a nurse is a felony, New York State Law Passed

Assaulting a nurse is now a Class D felony under New York state law.

The Violence Against Nurses Law passed this week puts nurses into a protected group that includes police officers, firefighters and emergency responders. A physical attack on a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse (or one of the other service workers in the protected category) is considered a felony and is punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Workplace violence against nurses has been in the news a lot lately. A California psychiatric technician was allegedly killed at the hands of a patient. A doctor assaulted an ICU nurse while he was a patient in Intensive Care. According to the Emergency Nurses Association, between 8 percent and 13 percent of emergency department nurses are victims of physical violence each week.

$4 drug programs could save economy billions: study | Reuters

U.S. consumers could save billions of dollars by filling prescriptions for inexpensive generic drugs at stores such as Wal-Mart and Target, according to a new report.

A growing number of national chain pharmacies offer the generic form of a range of drugs - including anti-allergy medications, antidepressants, antibiotics and cholesterol-lowering drugs - for $4 for a 30 day supply. However, researchers found that less than 6 percent of people who could use such a program take advantage of it - costing both consumers and the government extra bucks.

All told, the US could save as much as $5.8 billion, according to the study

Reversible causes of memory loss | cdaamerica

Reversible causes of memory loss

It’s important to be aware of ways that your health, environment, and
lifestyle may contribute to memory loss. Sometimes, even what looks like
significant memory loss can be caused by treatable conditions and reversible
external factors.

  • Side effects of medication. Many prescribed and over-the-counter drugs or combinations of drugs can cause cognitive problems and memory loss as a side effect. This is especially common in older adults because they break down and absorb medication more slowly. Common medications that affect memory and brain function include sleeping pills, antihistamines, blood pressure and arthritis medication, antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, and painkillers.
  • Depression. Depression can mimic the signs of memory loss, making it hard for you to concentrate, stay organized, remember things, and get stuff done. Depression is a common problem in older adults—especially if you’re less social and active than you used to be or you’ve recently experienced a number of important losses or major life changes (retirement, a serious medical diagnosis, the loss of a loved one, moving out of your home).

Since SEIU Local 1991 was chartered in 1991, we have negotiated some of the best wages and working conditions in the United States for our members. We are proud to have one of the few contracts in the nation with a guaranteed 40-hour work week as well as a full-time 36-hour work week. We recently negotiated into our contract a rare and coveted provision requiring a nurse-to-patients staffing ratios policy at Jackson."
