CDC study links bullying with family violence | Reuters

While bullies and their victims traffic in threats, taunts and fights in the schoolyard, a report on Thursday showed those on both sides are also more likely to live with violence at home.

Violent family encounters were most common among youth who identified as someone who has both bullied and been victimized, the report said.

The association was among findings from a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which along with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health analyzed data from middle and high school students across the state.

Massachusetts has been at the forefront of the bullying debate since the widely reported suicides of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince of South Hadley last year and 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover of Springfield in 2009.

Be your special needs child's advocate during air travel | Best Family Travel Advice

In today’s world of poor customer service and inconsistent policies, self-sufficient travel is the best. It may sound harsh, but nobody else outside your friends and family can be safely relied on to help you and your granddaughters. You can ask the airline to place a note in the reservation, but honestly, the advocacy is up to you.

Firstly, bring a letter from the children’s physician stating their medical needs and then request private screening at TSA. Communicate with the TSA agents at each step and ask for a supervisor if needed. Remain calm: they are not going to respect your situation as much as you’d like them to simply because most people don’t really understand. If you can ask a friend or relative to accompany you through airport security to the gate, that may free you up to care for the girls while the friend helps with belongings.

iStock 000000340090XSmall 300x238 Be your special needs childs advocate during air travelYou may want to see if the girls would wear a mask. Hand washing with soap and water is best, but when on airplanes, use instant hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes, wipe down tray tables and arm rests, and communicate your situation with flight attendants. There is a product that covers the seat called Plane Sheets. If using the airplane lavatory, do not wash hands in there, as there are so many germs on faucet, soap dispenser and door handle; instead use hand sanitizer at your seat.

Supreme Court punts on fast-track review of healthcare law - The Hill's Healthwatch

By Julian Pecquet - 04/18/11 10:36 AM ET

The Supreme Court has not acted on a request to expedite a review of legal challenges to the healthcare reform law.

The high court on Monday released the list of cases it has decided to take up or decline, and Virginia's healthcare reform challenge was not included.

Court watchers had expected the high court to announce whether it would expedite Virginia's lawsuit against the law, but the justices aren't saying either way — for now. The Supreme Court issues a regular list of orders on each Monday it is in session, but the justices can also issue "miscellaneous" orders in individual cases at any time.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R), who is challenging the law's individual mandate, has petitioned the court to skip the appeals process and take up the case as soon as possible.

"Given the importance of the issues at stake to the States and to the economy as a whole, this Court should grant certiorari to resolve a matter of imperative public importance," Cuccinelli argued in his Feb. 8 motion.

HealthNewsReview.org | Independent Expert Reviews of News Stories | Holding Health and Medical Journalism Accountable

Like the NPR story we also reviewed, this story about revised guidance on diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease does a nice job of clearly distinguishing what is relevant to readers and what is of interest only to researchers.

Our Review Summary

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

This report tells readers the stark reality, that lab tests and brain scans for Alzheimer’s are not ready for clinical use and even when the tests are validated, they will have limited value to patients until effective treatments are developed.

This story includes a comment about how early diagnosis could help patients and families plan for the future; but it would have been nice to see an acknowledgment of the potential psychological and social consequences.

Like the NPR story, this report fails to tell readers about the ties between quoted experts and companies that are developing tests and treatments, even though those ties were disclosed. This story quoted several experts, but none who are independent of the panel that issued the revised diagnosis guidance.

Why This Matters:

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

It is more than just validation of the new diagnostic approaches being described that will be needed before these can influence clinical practice. All of the diagnostic test characteristics will need to be examined, including the ability of the test results to accurately predict which patients are likely to develop AD (the false positive, false negative, positive and negative predictive value, etc). Additionally, the reliability of the measures will need to be determined. From a clinical perspective, until there are treatments that can alter progression, other than helping patients understand what to expect in the future, currently there is not a lot of benefit and there are potential harms for knowing early on if a patient has this condition.

Are Kickball and Tag Too Dangerous for Kids? | LiveScience

Until yesterday afternoon, the New York State Health Department was ready to declare whiffle ball, kickball and freeze tag too dangerous for kids to play at summer recreational programs without a medical professional present. But after outcry from some state lawmakers, the department has decided to reconsider its stance.

At first, the Health Department's list of games that pose a "significant risk to injury" — which also included horseshoes, capture-the-flag, dodgeball and most team sports — came with regulations: Any summer program offering two or more games or activities and at least one of those on the list must take all the same safety precautions as a full-fledged summer camp, including having a medical professional on staff, hiring a camp director with a bachelor's degree and 26 weeks of camp experience, and keeping detailed records.

State lawmakers, however, said the health officials went too far with the regulations, which they introduced to comply with a 2009 law on summer camp oversight, and that the regulations would put a lot of small, non-profit local recreation programs out of business. In response, Health Department officials plan to reassess their position, and focus more on potentially dangerous conditions rather than specific games. "There will be flexibility in how the law is implemented," department spokesperson Diane Mathis told the press yesterday (April 19).

Nurse's suicide follows tragedy | Seattle Times Newspaper

Seattle Times health reporter

Crisis help

Don't wait to seek help if you're in crisis.

In King County, call: 206-461-3222 (TTY/TDD 206-461-3219).

Outside King County, call 800-273-TALK (8255).

The suicide of a nurse who accidentally gave an infant a fatal overdose last year at Seattle Children's hospital has closed an investigation but opened wounds for her friends and family members, as they struggle to comprehend a second tragedy.

Kimberly Hiatt, 50, a longtime critical-care nurse at Children's, took her own life April 3. As a result, the state's Nursing Commission last week closed its investigation of her actions in the Sept. 19 death of Kaia Zautner, a critically ill infant who died in part from complications from an overdose of calcium chloride.

After the infant's death, the hospital put Hiatt on administrative leave and soon dismissed her. In the months following, she battled to keep her nursing license in the hopes of continuing the work she loved, despite having made the deadly mistake, friends and family members said.

To satisfy state disciplinary authorities, she agreed to pay a fine and to undergo a four-year probationary period during which she would be supervised at any future nursing job when she gave medication, along with other conditions, said Sharon Crum of Issaquah, Hiatt's mother.
