Reverse discrimination in nursing leadership: hitting the concrete ceiling. Porter-O'Grady T., Nurs Adm Q. 1995 Winter;19(2):56-62.:"Discrimination has many facets. In nursing there is as much discrimination as there is in any other group. Reverse discrimination, that is discrimination toward men in nursing, is evident even though it is well hidden. There are many situations and opportunities for the minority group in nursing (men) to experience the vagaries of gender prejudice in the same concentration as women experience in their attempt to integrate in more male-dominated professions. It is valuable to take time to denote the characteristics of gender bias in nursing and to identify mechanisms for handling it."

Canadian kids get failing grade for physical activity - CTV News

Canadian schoolchildren are getting poor grades over how much, or how little, physical activity they get on a daily basis.

Active Healthy Kids Canada issued its 2011 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth Tuesday, and Canadian youth received an "F" for how much so-called "active play" they engage in every day.

According to the report card, only seven per cent of Canadian youth and children get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Only nine per cent of boys and a mere four per cent of girls meet the guidelines, the report said.

During the after-school period between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., Canadian kids are getting only 14 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise.

Dr. Mark Tremblay, Chief Scientific Officer of Active Healthy Kids Canada, told CTV.ca that the after-school period is one of the best times for kids to engage in physical activity.

"They need a break from school after sitting in classes for six or seven hours," he said. "It's a time when everybody is out and about, it's still light out so it is safer than other times of the day."

He says kids should be making a remarkable change to the typical pattern of coming home, sitting in front of the couch, watching TV and engaging in other sedentary activities.

"Focusing on the after-school period as a window of opportunity to try to overcome inactivity in children and the obesity crisis we're seeing is worth exploring."

How academic physicians turn into drug company shills, KevinMD.com

by Carl Elliott

These days many thought leaders find themselves on shaky ground. The past few years have not been good for business. Some of the most prominent thought leaders have been exposed and censured by Grassley. Others have seen public opinion turning against them and gone underground. As more states institute Sunshine laws, anyone considering an industry consultancy must weigh the money and status boost against the potential downside of public exposure.

Still, the thought-leader business has proved more resilient than many people predicted. Most of the thought leaders investigated by Grassley have managed to retain their academic positions, even in the face of withering criticism. A resistance movement has even formed. Led by Dr. Thomas Stossel of Harvard University, the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators (ACRE) has defiantly opposed attempts to cut back industry payments to doctors.

Many former thought leaders simply confess disillusionment. “There is a feeling that you want to be where the action is, and even if it’s not real action, at least industry gives you the feeling that things are happening,” Healy says. “They give you the feeling that you’re up on the wave.” After a while, however, the thrill of consulting begins to wear thin. There are just too many airports, too many hotels, too many fancy dinners. Eventually they all look the same. Healy says, “You’ve got a choice between the boredoms of perpetually surfing—where the first two waves are fun, but eight hours later, Jesus Christ—or do you return to the tedium of the beach?”

amednews: 1 in 3 patients harmed during hospital stay :: April 18, 2011 ... American Medical News

By Kevin B. O'Reilly, amednews staff. Posted April 18, 2011.

One-third of hospital patients experience adverse events and about 7% are harmed permanently or die as a result, according to a study that detected patient safety problems at a far higher rate than other methods.

The study, in April's Health Affairs, echoes two reports issued in November 2010 that showed rates of adverse events hovering near 25% among hospitalized Medicare patients nationwide and at 10 North Carolina hospitals.

The findings draw attention to the safety troubles that have lingered in U.S. hospitals in the 12 years since the Institute of Medicine's headline-grabbing report "To Err is Human." The study cited research estimating that up to 98,000 patients die each year due to preventable medical errors.

"This is one of the best studies that now gives us a sense of how much harm is happening to patients in American hospitals," said Robert Wachter, MD, chief of the medical service at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, who was not involved in the research. "There is a tremendous amount of harm befalling patients who are admitted to hospitals and humongous opportunities for improvement."

Bullying sends kids to nurse for more than injury | Reuters

Both bullies and their victims take more trips to the nurse's office than other students - but not just for the obvious reasons.

In a new study published today in Pediatrics, kids involved in bullying were more likely to see the school nurse for illnesses and non-medical symptoms, in addition to injuries.

The finding means that school nurses could be the front line for spotting cases of bullying and bringing them to a stop.

Enlisting school nurses could be "another way of trying to keep a gauge of what's happening among the students in school," Eric Vernberg of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, the study's lead author, told Reuters Health.

"A lot of times, kids may experience some conflict, some bullying, and not involve the teacher or not tell a parent or not tell anybody really," he said, "particularly for a kid that's embarrassed about the difficulty they're having or afraid that saying things about it is going to make it worse in some way."

Recently, evidence has been piling up that being bullied can take a psychological toll on kids -- both during the bullying and later, when they are adults.
