Checking Your Medical Records - More Important Than Ever Before

Months ago, grand discussions of the shift from paper medical records to digital, electronic health and medical records, was all the rage.  In particular, among my Twitter colleagues, it seemed like it was all anyone wanted to talk about.

At the time, the big question was, how would doctors afford to make the shift?  Beyond just computerizing their records, they would need systems that actually share our records!  And systems that, once the meaningful use laws were determined, would allow patients to access their own records, too.

Here at the About.com Patient Empowerment site, we looked at electronic medical records - what they are, the plusses and the problems....

CDC Sees EHRs As Public Health 'Game Changer' -- InformationWeek

Sometimes forgotten in the rush to install electronic health records (EHRs) is that improving population and public health is a major goal of the federal meaningful use EHR incentive program. But many in the public health community are counting on greater EHR adoption and interoperability among physicians and hospitals to help identify and respond to future disease outbreaks, according to a top government health IT official.

"Public health agencies, from local to state to federal, have been building information technology for years, but because we don't have a lot of connections to y'all, we don't have a lot of information to share," Dr. Seth Foldy, director of the public health informatics and technology program office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Tuesday. "In the future, we assume that most of our public health allies will be perched in front of their EHRs."

Electronic Health Records: Status, Needs and Lessons – 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data

The use of electronic health records (EHRs) by medical practices and other organizations in the United States has increased measurably in the past decade. Despite the potential to improve the quality of patient care and enhance practices' financial performance, the technology remains far from universal.

To better understand the current state of EHR use, MGMA conducted a study funded by PNC Bank to explore the barriers and benefits of EHR adoption. MGMA collected data between Oct. 1, 2010, and Nov. 9, 2010, from 4,588 healthcare organizations nationwide that responded to the survey. The data represent the aggregate experience of more than 120,000 physicians in medical practice.

Danger of multiple emergency room visits to different hospitals

If you are one of the more than 100 million Americans who visit emergency rooms (ER) at least once a year, you’re not alone.

Americans, insured and not, make ample use of hospital emergency rooms. One out of every five visited an ER at least once in 2007, the latest year for which the National Center for Health Statistics has data. Among the uninsured, 7.4 percent made two or more visits to an ER, but so did 5.1 percent of people with private insurance.

Well if you want to stay safe and receive quality medical care while you’re in the ER, it’s best if you visit the same ER each time.
