Coonan, R.N., C.E.N., L.N.C.:"Infantile Spasms (sometimes called West Syndrome) is a condition that begins in infancy. Babies with this condition show abnormal, jerking body movements, also called spasms; hence the name, Infantile Spasms. The cause of Infantile Spasms is not always known. However, the most common known cause of Infantile Spasms is a lack of oxygen to the baby during delivery. In some cases the brain damage caused by this lack of oxygen could have been prevented if doctors had taken proper steps during delivery to insure the baby was receiving enough oxygen. As a result, many children who have Infantile Spasms are victims of medical malpractice."

International Child Health Nursing Alliance: The International Child Health Nursing Alliance is a recently established network of nurses and associated health professionals, connected by the Internet, who care for children and their families around the world. The ICHNA was newly formed at the Child Health 2000 Congress and Exposition in Vancouver, British Columbia in May-June 1995 as an associated organization of pediatric nurses and child health professionals allied to Global Child Health Society . At that time, a group of child health nursing leaders from around the world developed a report with organizational goals to form an alliance of individuals and groups to foster a child-friendly world and improve the health and happiness of children.

****************************************************** Pediatric Shock:
Shock in Children, The Pediatric Bulletin:"To understand the process of shock in children, we must understand the basics of cardiovascular physiology. There are certain values which need be understood. The cardiac output (CO) is the volume of blood leaving the heart each minute. The stroke volume (SV) is the amount of blood ejected with each beat. By definition, the value of the cardiac output is equal to the stroke volume multiplied by the heart rate (HR). In the majority of patients, if the heart rate falls, the stroke volume will increase to maintain the cardiac output. In certain examples, however, the muscle of the ventricles is noncompliant and the stroke volume is unable to change, causing the cardiac output to fall when the heart rate falls. These examples include multiple myocardial infarctions, chronic cardiomyopathies in neonates. Therefore, neonates cannot tolerate bradycardia (a slowing of the heart rate) since it results in a precipitous fall in CO."
