All in the balance: Nurse practitioners are ready to help meet baby boomers’ growing needs. #nurseup #aprn #healthcare

All in the balance: Nurse practitioners are ready to help meet baby boomers’ growing needs:"As they grow older, about 70 million baby boomers will test the mettle of the nation’s healthcare system — particularly its supply of primary care providers — like never before. Will there be enough PCPs to meet boomers’ chronic care needs? Some say no and are working toward securing nurse practitioners’ expanded scope of practice across the county, which will allow NPs to meet the growing need for more providers.

Members of America’s massive generation of baby boomers — people born from Jan. 1, 1946, through Dec. 31, 1964 — are now reaching age 65 at a rate of roughly 10,000 a day. The combination of aging baby boomers and an expected influx of patients seeking healthcare in 2014 under provisions of the Affordable Care Act may provide fodder for nurse practitioners seeking to expand scope-of-practice laws in the 34 states that limit it."

Clinical Nursing Case Studies:

Nursing Home Rehabilitation Stay Proves Terminal. Was Quality of Care Given An Issue?
Lloyd v. County of Du Page, 707 NE.2d 1252 - IL (1999)
Summary: Nursing homes are frequently a patient's destination for rehabilitation following surgery. Common conditions fitting this bill include large bone fractures, hip replacements and stroke. Following these acute episodes, the patients are too unstable to go home and not "sick" enough to have their hospital stays reimbursed by insurance companies. The purpose of admission to a nursing home is to help the patient regain lost function, strength and health. In this case, the patient would remain in the Nursing Home till her death of complications.

Elderly Patient Repeatedly Injured In Nursing Home "Accidents." Negligence, Coincidence or Abuse?
Brickey v. Concerned Care of Midwest Ince. 988 S.W. 2d 592 MO (1999)
Summary: As the elderly population continues to increase, more and more families are faced with the decision to place loved ones in nursing homes. When a family member is placed in a facility, a certain standard of care is expected. In this case, a resident was injured repeatedly while under their care. When the patient died a few days after being "dropped" the family sued.

Arch Intern Med -- Abstract: Patient Education to Prevent Falls Among Older Hospital Inpatients: A Randomized Controlled Trial, March 28, 2011, Haines et al. 171 (6): 516

Arch Intern Med. 2011;171(6):516-524. doi:10.1001/archinternmed.2010.444

Background  Falls are a common adverse event during hospitalization of older adults, and few interventions have been shown to prevent them.

Methods  This study was a 3-group randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of 2 forms of multimedia patient education compared with usual care for the prevention of in-hospital falls. Older hospital patients (n = 1206) admitted to a mixture of acute (orthopedic, respiratory, and medical) and subacute (geriatric and neurorehabilitation) hospital wards at 2 Australian hospitals were recruited between January 2008 and April 2009. The interventions were a multimedia patient education program based on the health-belief model combined with trained health professional follow-up (complete program), multi-media patient education materials alone (materials only), and usual care (control). Falls data were collected by blinded research assistants by reviewing hospital incident reports, hand searching medical records, and conducting weekly patient interviews.

Sending Out An Elder-Care SOS | cdaamerica

A growing number of websites, with names like CareCentral and Lotsa Helping Hands, are catering to such families. “It is the fastest-growing segment of our business,” says Jay Drayer, CEO of CareFlash, based in Austin, Texas, which services families with many types of health issues.

Like mainstream social-networking services, these sites make it possible for a caregiver to communicate with many people at once. Most allow families to post messages, blogs and photographs—and receive feedback from a supportive community. The services typically promise privacy and notify members when new information is added.

Caring For Elderly Parents: Top 10 Concerns | cdaamerica

By AgingCare.com

Parents care for their children, to strengthen body and mind, and
nurture them forward to independence. Siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and even friends and neighbors often join in the family circle, helping to care for the kids. Such is what caregiving is all about, a nurturing,
supportive commitment by family and extended family members. Many of us have the opportunity to return that same level of commitment and support to Mom, Dad or both as they age.

It is time to return the favor, not just individually, but as a family, to
provide support where necessary and preserve your parents’ ability and
independence as long as possible. What are the 10 most important family concerns in caregiving for a parent? Consider:

1. Rally the Troops

Deborah Halpern, Communications Director for the non-profit National Family Caregiver’s Association, urges that caregiving your parent is not a one-person job or burden. Instead, you should have a family team that includes friends and neighbors, each with a role and responsibility in the caregiving process. There must be a ringleader, according to Halpern, who contacts each family member with the invitation or challenge to”step up to the plate and help.”

Consider the team concept as akin to hiring for different jobs in a company.
Everyone is good at something, while he or she may be inept or less than
qualified in another task or field. When several family members are involved,
even for just a few hours each week, the burden on the primary caregiver is
reduced significantly. Sharing responsibilities also brings more family members
into active contact, sharing, support, monitoring, understanding and visiting
with Mom or Dad.

Online tool can help seniors determine risk for dementia | Johns Hopkins University - The Gazette

A quick online assessment tool developed by Johns Hopkins researchers can help worried seniors find out if they are at risk of developing dementia and determine whether they should seek a comprehensive, face-to-face diagnosis from a physician, according to a new study.

The tool, which is being refined and validated, is not meant to replace a full evaluation from a doctor that includes a physical exam, blood work, imaging studies and more. Instead, this assessment provides a scientific way to help a person educate himself about a disease that doctors now believe is best managed if caught early.

“As the population ages and dementia becomes more prevalent, it’s important to get people diagnosed early,” said Jason Brandt, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the leader of the study appearing online in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. “Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia don’t just creep up on you. They’re incubating for decades in the brain. This tool is potentially very useful in determining who is at risk.”

Among the questions asked on the Dementia Risk Assessment are whether a person has a history of high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, high cholesterol or head injury, all of which are considered well-documented risk factors for dementia. The assessment also includes a simple memory test that could point to a subtle cognitive decline, Brandt says.

The study analyzed responses from 357 people over the age of 50 who took the assessment at www.alzcast.org. Those who scored lowest on the memory test were significantly older and were more likely to be men, have hypertension and report severe memory problems. And while only 9 percent of respondents reported they had severe memory problems, more than one-third said they had a first-degree relative with dementia or severe memory loss—a major risk factor for the condition.

The assessment takes just five to 10 minutes to complete online, and the questions have been borrowed from other scientifically valid assessments.

Money Problems | 10 Signs Your Parent is Struggling Financially, Caring.com

Your parents assure you that their bank balance is in fine shape. But is it really true -- or are you worried they're actually just scraping by?

Even if your parents haven't shared the details of their financial situation, there can be tell-tale warning signs that they're feeling the need to cut back on their expenses. Home Instead Senior Care, an elder care provider, has compiled a list of signs that may indicate your parents are in need of financial help.

Here are the warning signs to look out for, according to Home Instead:

  1. Is your seniors' home too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter?
  2. Is the lawn not getting mowed and is the sidewalk not getting cleared in inclement weather?
  3. Are they complaining about not being able to afford medications?
