The inspirational doctor paralyzed from the waist who can still perform surgeries thanks to remarkable stand-up wheelchair

The inspirational doctor paralyzed from the waist who can still perform surgeries thanks to remarkable stand-up wheelchair:"A successful Missouri surgeon has beaten unbelievable odds by returning to the OR after suffering sudden paralysis from the waist down.
Dr. Ted Rummel lost his ability to walk or stand when a blood-filled cyst on his spine burst in 2010. A year of intense rehabilitation later, he was back in the game.
Rummel even overcame the hindrance of sitting as he worked by utilizing an ingenious stand-up wheel chair.
Now, the tenacious orthopedic surgeon can do virtually everything in the OR he previously could and maintains his physical strength with daily exercise and his emotional strength thanks to a deeply devoted family."

Nurses with disabilities going back to work, Donna Maheady, ARNP, ExceptionalNurse.com

The melody to “Where have all the flowers gone?” by Pete Seeger could easily be sung with the words “Where have all the nurses gone?”

Part of the answer rests with nurses with disabilities who have left the workforce. Many are eager to return to patient care but are “scared silent.”

Hospitals have varied ways of supporting nurses with disabilities. The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act has helped, but hearts and minds are slow to change.

How do I know this? Well, it all began with my daughter and a carpenter….

LeaveNoNurseBehind.COM, Donna Maheady, Ed.D., ARNP Exceptionalnurse.com Disability Resource

Welcome to LeaveNoNurseBehind.com

In the midst of a national nursing shortage, many nurses who can and want to work are being denied the opportunity. They are being pushed out of jobs and turned away from unfilled positions, all because they have disabilities.

Eleven nurses who defied disability tell their personal stories of courage and determination in the face of stigma and discrimination, proving that nurses with disabilities have the ability to successfully fill the jobs that so desperately need filling.

A car accident. A fall. A stroke. Depression. Disability can happen to anyone and at any time. By knowing the ins and outs of disability laws as they relate to those in the nursing profession and taking the measures outlined in this book, you can ensure that you will be prepared should disability ever happen to you.

This book serves as both an inspiration and as a practical guide for nurses living and working with disabilities and for students with disabilities pursuing careers in nursing. Nursing with a disability is a challenge, but with proper planning, the right knowledge and perseverance, it is not impossible. The nurses who share their stories here are living proof of that.

Simple tests can tell who can drive after stroke, study finds - USATODAY.com

"A quick and objective screening in the doctor's office can help them to make more accurate decisions," said review author Hannes Devos, a research assistant at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.

However, several U.S. stroke experts said they weren't ready to accept the new study's findings.

The American Heart Association estimates that 6.4 million stroke survivors are alive in the United States today. While some patients are able to recover with few permanent disabilities, strokes can cause some people to permanently lose memory and the ability to properly move their bodies.

In some cases, patients with serious motor-skill problems can still drive a car as long as they're able to get proper equipment, such as an automatic transmission, a left-sided accelerator pedal for patients who have trouble moving their right side, and steering knobs that allow one-handed driving, Devos said

Caring For Elderly Parents: Top 10 Concerns | cdaamerica

By AgingCare.com

Parents care for their children, to strengthen body and mind, and
nurture them forward to independence. Siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and even friends and neighbors often join in the family circle, helping to care for the kids. Such is what caregiving is all about, a nurturing,
supportive commitment by family and extended family members. Many of us have the opportunity to return that same level of commitment and support to Mom, Dad or both as they age.

It is time to return the favor, not just individually, but as a family, to
provide support where necessary and preserve your parents’ ability and
independence as long as possible. What are the 10 most important family concerns in caregiving for a parent? Consider:

1. Rally the Troops

Deborah Halpern, Communications Director for the non-profit National Family Caregiver’s Association, urges that caregiving your parent is not a one-person job or burden. Instead, you should have a family team that includes friends and neighbors, each with a role and responsibility in the caregiving process. There must be a ringleader, according to Halpern, who contacts each family member with the invitation or challenge to”step up to the plate and help.”

Consider the team concept as akin to hiring for different jobs in a company.
Everyone is good at something, while he or she may be inept or less than
qualified in another task or field. When several family members are involved,
even for just a few hours each week, the burden on the primary caregiver is
reduced significantly. Sharing responsibilities also brings more family members
into active contact, sharing, support, monitoring, understanding and visiting
with Mom or Dad.

Traumatic Brain Injury Information Page, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS):"Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden physical assault on the head causes damage to the brain. The damage can be focal, confined to one area of the brain, or diffuse, involving more than one area of the brain. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. A closed head injury occurs when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, but the object does not break through the skull. A penetrating head injury occurs when an object pierces the skull and enters the brain tissue. Several types of traumatic injuries can affect the head and brain. A skull fracture occurs when the bone of the skull cracks or breaks. A depressed skull fracture occurs when pieces of the broken skull press into the tissue of the brain. This can cause bruising of the brain tissue, called a contusion. A contusion can also occur in response to shaking of the brain within the confines of the skull, an injury called "countrecoup." Shaken baby syndrome is a severe form of head injury that occurs when a baby is shaken forcibly enough to cause extreme countrecoup injury. Damage to a major blood vessel within the head can cause a hematoma, or heavy bleeding into or around the brain. The severity of a TBI can range from a mild concussion to the extremes of coma or even death. A coma is a profound or deep state of unconsciousness. Symptoms of a TBI may include headache, nausea, confusion or other cognitive problems, a change in personality, depression, irritability, and other emotional and behavioral problems. Some people may have seizures as a result of a TBI."

Asperger’s Syndrome: Struggling to Be Next to Normal « Fern Life Center

My oldest child, Cameron, who is now 21 years old, was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) when he was in 5th grade. He is graduating next semester with a four-year college degree and an intention to proceed to graduate school. Any parent with a child on the “Autistic Spectrum” will recognize the journey that we took to get to that diagnosis and to this place. I am writing this blog to help others out there who are teachers, caregivers, family members, friends, and/or healthcare providers of these very special kids. I say special not in a sense of somehow handicapped, but special as in unique and with something to offer the world that comes through a lens of rigorous authenticity. People with AS are known for their unrelenting honesty and inability to tell even the whitest of lies to please another. What a wonderful gift for society to receive; members who have integrity that is so deeply ingrained that it is actually almost impossible to lie.

The reason I had my child evaluated was because of a parent teacher conference gone bad. Cameron’s 5th grade teacher felt I was too “enmeshed” with him and was milking the system for the individualized educational plan (IEP) he had in place. She felt that he would function just fine without my “interference”. His IEP stipulated he was to have someone sit next to him at the front of the room that didn’t fidget or interrupt in class. That particular 5th grade class was full of boys who had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Cameron was falling through the cracks. There had never been such a distorted ratio of boys with ADHD and so few girls in this elementary school before and the teachers were at their wits’ end trying to teach them and maintain order. Kids with AS frequently sit in class and daydream of their latest passionate interest and can get lost in the river of education as a result. I had asked for one of the quiet, steady girls to sit next to him so he wouldn’t get distracted and come home not knowing what was discussed in class.

When the teacher told me I was the problem, I thought to myself, “maybe she’s right, maybe Cameron and I should both be tested and see what is going on. Let’s face it, I AM stressed that my son doesn’t pay attention in class, is distracted on the soccer field by an ant hill, hums quietly to himself at the dinner table, and doesn’t get invited to birthday parties. Maybe reading about birds of prey, building mobiles of birds of prey, going to the Museum of Natural History in Salt Lake City for the birds of prey exhibit EVERY WEEK, making masks that represent birds of prey, doing a hawk on his birthday cake, and generally immersing myself into the world of birds of prey with Cameron is a big mistake. (Birds of prey were his current passion and he could tell you EVERYTHING about the subtlest feature of each of the birds of prey in the wild you could possibly want…and much, much, more).

More young people are winding up in nursing homes - Yahoo! News

Adam Martin doesn't fit in here. No one else in this nursing home wears Air Jordans. No one else has stacks of music videos by 2Pac and Jay-Z. No one else is just 26.

It's no longer unusual to find a nursing home resident who is decades younger than his neighbor: About one in seven people now living in such facilities in the U.S. is under 65. But the growing phenomenon presents a host of challenges for nursing homes, while patients like Martin face staggering isolation.

"It's just a depressing place to live," Martin says. "I'm stuck here. You don't have no privacy at all. People die around you all the time. It starts to really get depressing because all you're seeing is negative, negative, negative."

The number of under-65 nursing home residents has risen about 22 percent in the past eight years to about 203,000, according to an analysis of statistics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. That number has climbed as mental health facilities close and medical advances keep people alive after they've suffered traumatic injuries. Still, the overall percentage of nursing home residents 30 and younger is less than 1 percent.

Martin was left a quadriplegic when he was accidentally shot in the neck last year by his stepbrother. He spent weeks hospitalized before being released to a different nursing home and eventually ended up in his current residence, the Sarasota Health and Rehabilitation Center. There are other residents who are well short of retirement age, but he is the youngest.

Guides help recovering patients find long-term care | The Salt Lake Tribune

An uncomfortable truth for anyone facing disability for a year or more: If you go into a nursing home, you might never get out.

Under patchwork Medicare provisions, says Utah Commission on Aging Director Maureen Henry, it is more convenient for hospitals to discharge patients to nursing homes than to figure out how they might live in their homes and communities.

But what looks like the easy solution can be costly. Nursing home bills may drive more people onto Medicaid, which costs taxpayers more, and the move can unnecessarily disrupt the community and impoverish the lives of patients, Henry says.

“You’re shifting residence; you’re shifting family structure out of the community and into the nursing facility,” she says.

Now, with the help of a $700,000 grant from the federal Administration on Aging, the Utah commission is linking hospital discharge staff with “options planners,” who help guide patients and their families through a complicated array of choices for extended care.

The way Medicare and Medicaid law works, people are guaranteed care in nursing homes. But there is no similar guarantee of coverage for care outside an institution, meaning family finances may limit the choices.

“People have the right to decide where and when they receive long-term care,” Henry says. “Our objective is to try to catch people before they are scrambling in a crisis, stop giving people the runaround.”

The "Independent" Medical Examination, Evan K. Aidman, Esq.:"The insurance company has the right in every personal injury case to have you examined by a doctor it chooses. This examination represents the third stage of the discovery process. The insurance lawyers like to refer to this as an "independent medical exam" or an IME. The IME is anything but independent and no insurance lawyer will claim otherwise outside the courtroom, that is, not with a straight face. The doctors paid by the insurance company strain to offer opinions that help the insurance company. Also, the IME doctor’s medical skills may be secondary in importance to his skills at testifying in a compelling and convincing manner."

Unjust Treatment: 'Independent' Medical Examinations & Workers Compensation in New York State, York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health:"Each year approximately 500,000 occupational illnesses and injuries are reported to the New York State Workers' Compensation Board. Of these, several thousand claims for occupational disease are challenged by workers' compensation insurance carriers for reasons that frequently defy close medical analysis and too often defy common sense. With millions of dollars in profit at stake, insurance carriers: challenge valid occupational disease claims, which results in workers often failing to pursue their cases or eventually settling for less than they are entitled to;"

Independent Medical Examinations, Dr. Samuel M. Rock:"Independent Medical Examinations concentrate on the patient's progress in psychotherapy (whether in the No-Fault arena or the Workmen's Compensation area). I was asked to do an Independent Medical Examination for a law firm. (Usually, IME companies ask for causality connections- which exist between the accident and the mental problems of the claimants. In addition, they usually require the provider to evaluate Maximum Medical Improvement and to determine whether there is a psychological disability.) In this legal case, I was asked to determine if a psychological condition continued to exist within the claimant."

Independent Medical Examinations, By Attorney James A. Pitts, Schoone, Leuck, Kelley, Pitts & Knurr, S.C.:"Whenever any person puts his or her mental or physical condition at issue in any case in which compensation is sought, the insurance company or other responsible party defending the case has a right to have a physician of its own choice examine the claimant. The logic of this general rule cannot be questioned. The manner in which so-called "independent medical examinations" are carried out is often fraught with controversy. If the claimant is not properly prepared for what lies ahead, the claim can be lost or seriously damaged. The procedural rules governing independent medical examinations vary among federal and state jurisdictions for tort cases, as well as for cases involving statutory claims such as workers compensation. Several general requirements are universal."

Independent Medical Examinations (IME), State of Wyoming, Department of Employment:"(a) Medical examinations may be requested by either the Division or your employer. The examination is a medical evaluation of your condition. If an assessment of your permanent physical impairment is required, you will receive an impairment rating. However, the doctor providing this examination/assessment will not be taking over your medical care. You should continue to see your primary health care provider."
