Report Cites Link Between Abuse and Birth Control Sabotage - NYTimes.com

Men who abuse women physically and emotionally may also sabotage their partners’ birth control, pressuring them to become pregnant against their will, new reports suggest.

Several small studies have described this kind of coercion among low-income teenagers and young adults with a history of violence by intimate partners. Now, a report being released Tuesday by the federally financed National Domestic Violence Hotline says 1 in 4 women who agreed to answer questions after calling the hot line said a partner had pressured them to become pregnant, told them not to use contraceptives, or forced them to have unprotected sex.

The report was based on answers from more than 3,000 women, but it was not a research study, those involved said.

“It was very eye-opening,” said Lisa James, director of health at the Family Violence Prevention Fund in San Francisco, which worked with the hot line on the report. “There were stories about men refusing to wear a condom, forcing sex without a condom, poking holes in condoms, flushing birth control pills down the toilet.

“There were lots of stories about hiding the birth control pills — that she kept ‘losing’ her birth control pills, until she realized that he was hiding them,” Ms. James added.

Where are the Nurses Mr. President? Nobody Cares.

To the President of the United States from the Yoga Nurse:

    Dear Mr. President,

May I be so bold to tell you in my not-so humble opinion the answer to your question, “Where are the nurses?”  Elementary dear Watson.  Nobody wants the job.  why not? because … “This Job is Killing Me.

As an advocate for nurses, I currently teach meditation, natural stress relief techniques and medical yoga to nurses and nursing organizations through out the country to help them with morale and wellness on the job.  Shockingly, I often hear nurses say these exact words to me: “This job is killing me and I’d kill to get off the floor.” It shocked me because I too said those very words at times in my nursing career, but never out loud, and only to myself.  These words are engraved in my psyche as the global lament of way too many nurses.  Never mind what country, color, religion or background of the nurse, (I have worked in Canada and the USA) it is the same story and not a pretty one.

Why is this job killing me? There are endless reasons why nurses are “dying” from their work and why the job is literally making them sick.  Just a few examples that you can surely relate to: Insufficient staffing, overwork, impossibly long shifts, endless charting, little time for patient care, working with inexperienced nurses, burnt out nurses, slackers, disrespect, conflicts between nurses, nurses and doctors, managers, management, lawsuits and liability, being abused by patients i.e. hitting, biting, scratching, punching, yelling, poor health issues, obesity because the only reward is eating…that is, if you get the chance on any given shift, accusations of improper care, etc. etc. etc… (Your turn, fill in the blanks____. _____. _____.). Enough already, you get the idea.

Health Crisis, Actually A Lifestle Crisis, Local Voices, North Zone, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 - chicagotribune.com

Driving back home recently at 3 a.m. after performing a lifesaving heart procedure on a morbidly obese 45-year-old man who was having a massive heart attack, I was reminded of the harsh reality of America's health care crisis. Not only was the patient a heavy smoker, but he also had high blood pressure and diabetes, and hadn't been to a doctor in several years.

If only this young man didn't smoke, exercised and had his blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol monitored as part of a regular medical checkup, he may not have required emergency medical care at such a young age.

In a recent discussion with another patient regarding his discharge medications after a heart attack, he volunteered, "Well, I'm going to have to modify my budget." When asked what he meant, he continued with a wry smile, "I'm going to have to shift my spending money from cigarettes to statins and Plavix."

Medical News: Arizona Mulls Checking Hospital Patients' Citizenship - in Public Health & Policy, Health Policy from MedPage Today

Arizona's state government is considering new legislation that would prevent hospitals from giving nonemergency treatment to suspected illegal immigrants.

Under Arizona Senate Bill 1405, nonemergency patients would have to show proof of citizenship or legal immigrant status before they could be admitted to hospitals in the state.

Patients without adequate documentation who need emergency care could still be treated, but hospital officials would be required to notify federal immigration officials after treatment was provided.

Hospitals would also have to notify the federal authorities about nonemergency patients denied care because of their lack of documentation.

The bill would stiffen what is already the nation's toughest -- and most controversial -- state law on illegal immigration. Last year, Arizona enacted legislation requiring police officers to check citizenship and immigration status of anyone they may suspect of being in the country illegally.

The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association condemned the bill, calling it "an undue burden" on hospitals as well as patients.

In a statement provided to MedPage Today, the group said the legislation "would result in a delayed hospital admissions process for all patients, including U.S. citizens."

Moreover, the group said, "all hospital patients would be required to carry documentation acceptable for citizenship verification, placing an undue burden on patients and possibly jeopardizing their care."

It's unclear whether the bill is popular enough to win passage.

It had appeared on the state Senate Judiciary Committee agenda for Monday. But according to the website Politico, it was pulled at the last minute when the bill's backers -- including Senate President Russell Pearce, who was among its co-sponsors -- decided they weren't going to win a vote.

But, the website reported, supporters may seek to bring it before other committees.

Myths About Heart Disease - Nursing Link

    Anita Manning | USA TODAY

    February 01, 2011

Imagine hearing news of a catastrophe causing the deaths of 2,200 Americans every day — an average of one every 39 seconds.

    A plague? Nuclear fallout?

It’s heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and circulatory system. The No. 1 killer stalking the world, cardiovascular diseases cause more deaths than all forms of cancer combined.

It’s an equal-opportunity destroyer, although it does have a preference for people of color and those over 65. But no age, race or economic class is immune.

“There’s a lack of awareness of what ideal cardiovascular health really is,” says Ralph Sacco, president of the American Heart Association. While 35% of people surveyed say they’re in good health, when quizzed about seven major health factors — diet, activity level, blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, blood sugar and smoking status — only about half of 1% hit all the targets for good health, he says. “People think they’re healthier than they are,” he says, making it less likely that they’ll take steps to reduce their heart risks.

Do Registered Nurses Need a BSN?

RegisteredNurseMost potential Registered Nurses always ponder the same age old question, "Do I need BSN or should I just get a ADN?"

    Learn about degree programs here.

Sacco and other heart experts highlight 10 myths of heart disease:
