Study: Few Americans accurately monitor calories - USATODAY.com
Only 9% of people in the USA can accurately estimate the number of calories they should eat in a day, and 9% keep track of their calories every day.
People have plenty of excuses for not tracking: They say it's extremely difficult, and they lack the interest, knowledge and focus. Some say they're not convinced that it matters all that much.
These are among the findings of a nationally representative online survey of 1,000 people, conducted for the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation.

Should You Incorporate Your Registry Business? By Joseph Caracci, RN:"The short answer is yes! When starting a new nurse registry business, you are entering into a legal business environment that requires you to take steps to protect your personal assets, such as your home, your savings, and your retirement. With this in mind, you need to determine which legal form you are going to take for your new registry. Some of the common choices are a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a limited liability partnership (LLP), a limited liability company (LLC), and a corporation."

A Nurse Is More, by Richard G. Shuster, Nursing Poems, Inspirational Stories
To Receive our inspirational stories as we post them subscribe to our mailing list by sending a blank e-mail to inspirationalstories-subscribe@topica.com
A Nurse Is More, Why?
Though nobody, can say why, for sure,
Nurse's desire, for service, is pure.
Not for themselves, it has to be for others.
A life dedicated, to their sisters and their brothers.A Nurse Is More, How?
Through reserves, of strength, care and love,
Nurses take their lead, from the power above.
Above and beyond, their duty comes first.
Their patient's needs paramount, before even hunger and thirst.A Nurse Is More, When?
When we need them the most, at our times of ill,
Nurses come through, with their care and goodwill.
When we feel we can't go on, and wish, to give up the ghost.
That's when our Nurses, give it their most.A Nurse Is More, Where?
In the hospital, the battlefield, the clinic and hospice,
Nurses are there, in the ER, the OR, the workplace, and medical office.
Where we are, to go for our care, thankfully, we find Nurses there.
Aging, sick, fearful, weary, we turn to Nurses, and know they care.A Nurse Is More,
A Nurse Is More, much more than all we've said, or all we can say,
other than, to acknowledge the Nurses, who so brighten our day.
In gratitude, we thank Nurses, their willingness to serve, we find so
appealing, bringing to us, their comfort, wisdom, compassion and healing.Richard G. Shuster

Clinical Trial Deaths And Compensation In India // Pharmalot
An investigation by India’s health ministry has found that drugmakers running clinical trials in the country have not compensated survivors of most volunteers who died during their studies. Of 671 deaths that were reported last year, there is evidence that compensation was given in just three cases, The Business Standard writes.
And so, the health ministry has asked 44 drugmakers to explain why they have not provided compensation, which is mandatory under the current law. Among those queried were Eli Lilly, Novartis, Pfizer, Bayer, Merck, Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi-Aventis. For instance, data compiled by the ministry show there were 152 deaths reported during Sanofi trials and 138 took place in Bayer trials.
A Novartis spokesperson tells the paper that its clinical trial investigator insisted any deaths were not caused by a medication, but instead due to the progression of underlying diseases. And compensation is not required in such cases. Other drugmakers offered a similar argument. Ministry officials also say that most deaths, which were attributed to cancer or cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders, seemed to have occurred due to the advanced stage of illness among volunteers.

Children hospitalized longer when parents aren't fluent in English - FierceHealthcare
Children hospitalized for infections were more likely to spend more time in the hospital and were less likely to receive home healthcare referrals if their parents or main caregivers had difficulty speaking English, a new study reports in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
In a nine-year study (between 2000 and 2008), nearly 1,300 children whose parents or caregivers were determined to have limited English proficiency were found to have spent at least 60 percent more time in the hospital when compared to children whose parents/caregivers spoke fluently, said study author Michael Levas, MD, and and his colleagues from Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo.

Overall, most of the parents and caregivers observed by the researchers--nearly 97 percent--were proficient in English. The 3 percent who were not were more likely to be Latino and either uninsured or insured by Medicaid for both comparisons.

The Medical Quack: HealthGrades And Other MD Rating and Referral Sites List “Dead Doctors” on Their MD Information Pages And Even Include the Insurance Plans the “Dead Doctors” Honor
This just goes to show you can’t really believe every thing you read on the web. I came across this by accident when doing some searches relative to the Medical Quack. I went to an obgyn doctor for many years and was very happy with her and would still be a patient today except for the fact that she unfortunately passed away from breast cancer.
These sites are supposed to “rate and “help” people but I am not convinced how valuable they are when I see my former physician who has been dead for around 6 years still listed and according to the site, she takes HealthNet. You can read on the site about the focus on helping hospitals with marketing and other software and management areas of business. I guess they are too busy marketing to look for a little bit of accuracy here with the physicians they provide information for. Marketing captures all today. I did call her old phone number out of curiosity and it said it had been disconnected so goodness forbid that phone number being given out to anyone else here, they would kill the phone company with all the wrong numbers due to a listing as such.

How Twitter changed the life of this physician executive consultant
by Kent Bottles, MD
Every morning at 5:30 AM, I am at my computer scouring the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and other news sources for articles about health care and wellness.
These articles are then summarized in 140 characters with a link to the original article and tweeted. As of today there are 3700 followers of my informal aggregated health care news service, and I hear about it if I am late or slack off on the job. My Twitter community depends on me, and I depend on them.
Twitter has transformed my professional life as an independent physician executive consultant-keynoter who advises health systems and medical groups. Twitter is the main tool I use to monitor the latest developments in the world of health care delivery, payment reform, and physician integration.
I follow about 1,000 health care professionals on Twitter, and I often learn about developments in real-time long before they hit the newspapers and journal articles.
