Campbell’s Soup Has a Math Problem | Fooducate

Here’s an interesting read from the Consumerist Blog. Several moms from New Jersey are suing Campbell’s for misleading labeling.

You’d think that the soup on the right has 25% less sodium than the one on the left, but in fact, they both have 480mg. So why the big bold statement? If you read the fine print, you’ll realize that this is 25% less than other regular soups.

To Campbell’s credit, they have been reducing sodium in their soups in the past few years and plan to continue reductions.

But stating “25% Less Sodium” or “30% more fiber” in bold text and then adding a tiny qualifier at the bottom “compared to regular” is the kind of sleazy behavior we all hate as consumers.

And 480mg of sodium is still quite a high count for a single cup of soup.

Conflicts Of Interest In Guideline Development: A Dirty Little Secret Gets Aired Again | The Health Care Blog

An Archives of Internal Medicine article (Conflicts of Interest in Cardiovascular Clinical Practice Guidelines) is getting a lot of notice today. In essence, many of the physicians who develop guideline that influence practice patterns and payment decisions have conflicts. The authors recommend only allowing those without conflicts to write the guidelines.

This isn’t a new issue. In 2006 I wrote a piece (Another dirty little secret is out in the open) and am reposting it below because it’s timely:

A year ago in Time to deal with medicine’s dirty little secrets?, I wrote about a variety of practices that are relatively well-known in the health care field but would be shocking to outsiders. Industry often takes the blame for “aggressive marketing tactics,” and no doubt some of that is deserved. But physicians are also culpable.

Why Vitaminwater Is Bad For Public Health - Matthew Herper - The Medicine Show - Forbes

Who needs a flu shot when you can have a bottle of flat sugar water spiked with ascorbic acid and food coloring?

At least, that’s the impression that Vitaminwater, made by Coca-Cola’s Glaceau unit, left in one advertisement. The National Consumers League, a 100-year-old advocacy group, sent a formal complaint about Vitaminwater’s ads to the Federal Trade Commission last week. The NCL also complained about a Vitaminwater TV spot, and about the slogans on the company’s bottles, which declare that “vitamins + water = all you need.” I’ve included both advertisements in this story for reference.

Courtesy National Consumers League

“Discouraging members of the public from getting a flu shot as recommended by government health authorities is not only deceptive, but dangerous,” writes Sally Greenberg, the NCL’s executive director. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other public health agencies, have recommended that many Americans get a vaccination to protect them from contracting the flu.”
